Abstract: A method for reducing broken fibers on the surface of a carbon fiber bundle involves passing the yarn through a passage in a fluid jet which in turn is supplied with a rimming flow of liquid. When the fiber bundle contacts the liquid, some of the broken fibers snap off and others are twisted and unidirectionally cabled back into the fiber bundle.
Abstract: The process of this invention provides for the conversion of amino acid amides having the formula ##STR1## to 3-amino-2-oxo-1-azetidinesulfonic acid salts having the formula ##STR2## wherein one of R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 is hydrogen and the other is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl and M.sup..sym. is hydrogen or a cation.

Abstract: Aryl oxo-alkynoates are 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors, making them useful for the treatment of inflammation, chronic obstructive lung disease or psoriasis. These compounds have the formula: ##STR1## wherein n is 1-12;R.sup.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkenyl, or phenyl; andAryl is naphthyl, phenyl or phenyl substituted with a variety of groups.
Abstract: A centrifuge rotor having a flexible carrier is characterized by a restoring cap assembly. The cap assembly responds to centrifugal force to displace from its initial to final positions. As it returns the cap acts against the flexible carrier to assist the same to the first position.
Abstract: A removable core for use in the production of tubular structures from fibre einforced resin materials. The body of the core is composed of a foam material which softens or collapses under the action of heat sufficient to cure the resin material but is hard and cross-sectionally dimensionally stable under less heat than that. The core is provided on the outside with a heat shrunk plastic tube or hose which closely embraces the foam body and serves as a coating therefor, thereby enhancing the rigidity and stability of shape of the core and imparting thereto a smooth surface.

Abstract: An efficient look-up table encoder for encoding k bit information words with linear error correcting block codes is provided comprising a plurality of read-only memories having 2.sup.x.sbsp.1, 2.sup.x.sbsp.2, . . . , and 2.sup.x.sbsp.i address locations, respectively, where x.sub.1 +x.sub.2 + . . . x.sub.i =k. Each of the read-only memories receives a portion of a k bit information word that serves to address a respective location therein, thereby mapping the portion of the k bit information word into an output word stored at the location. Corresponding bits of output words from the plurality of read-only memories are mod-2 summed by n-k exclusive-OR gates to generate a parity word associated with the information word. For systematic encoding, the parity word is then appended to the information word to form a codeword uniquely associated with the information word. This encoding scheme obviates look-up tables having 2.sup.k x(n-k) storage locations.
Abstract: A method of communicating data in a multinodal peer network communication system is disclosed in which the data is transmitted in accordance with an established priority scheme. The method uses two techniques to ensure that higher priority data is transmitted before lower priority data. In one technique, decreasing priority time-windows are established by each node of the system following the end of a transmission on a shared transmission medium. Subsequently, data is transmitted when the priority of the data matches or exceeds the priority of the time-window. In the other technique, data collisions on the shared medium are resolved by use of the priority time-window technique in combination with the use of a pseudo-random back-off timer.
Abstract: A process for recovering a fluoroalkanoic acid from an aqueous medium which comprises treating an aqueous mixture containing the acid or a selected salt of the acid with a selected quaternary ammonium salt to form an organic compound, contacting the resulting mixture with a chlorinated hydrocarbon liquid to extract the organic compound from the aqueous liquid into the organic liquid, distilling the extractant, then acidifying the organic compound and steam distilling.
Abstract: An article of microwave cookware with a thermoset polyester substrate coated with an epoxy primer and a silicone resin topcoat which has two silicone resins with different methyl:phenyl ratios, one higher and the other lower to optimize both hardness and non-stick characteristics of the coating.

Abstract: A dry instant dessert mix composition containing a cold water swelling hydroxypropylated granular starch component, a non-starch saccharide bulking and/or sweetener agent and a high intensity sweetener, which can be readily dispersed and hydrated in cold liquids. The dry mix composition is particularly advantageous in that it can be formulated to provide a reduced calorie dessert mix composition.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for establishing a stress index S of a subject by determining from the EKG of the subject the peak valve of the R-wave and the T-wave; determining the ratio of the R-peak to the T-peak as an initial stress value Z; determining the corresponding stress value Z after the subject experiences stress or relief of stress and establishing the stress index S as the ratio of the Z values (after/before). A stress meter is proposed to provide visual or other indications of the instantaneous stress index. Methods of exercising subjects or treating subjects in accordance with stress index values are disclosed.
Abstract: Compounds of the formula ##STR1## are disclosed. These compounds are useful as hypotensive agents due to their angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition activity and depending upon the definition of X may also be useful as analgesics due to their enkephalinase inhibition activity.

Abstract: A continuous process for preparing a package of polyester yarn having a low shrinkage by spinning, hot-drawing, heat-relaxing, interlacing and winding, wherein the shrinkage is reduced while minimizing reduction of tenacity by keeping the yarn hotter, preferably by using heated air for interlacing.
