Abstract: Tetrafluoroethylene fine powder resins are described which have surprisingly high extrusion pressures and molecular weights which make them useful in post-paste extruded stretching operations. The resins are made by using a permanganate polymerization initiator and controlling its rate of addition so that the reaction slows down at the end of the polymerization.
Abstract: The individual conductors in each layer of a layered cable are located and connected by first joining each of the conductors in the layer and thereafter separating the conjoined conductors along a predetermined path defined by reference to a predetermined indicia carried by one of the conductors in the layer.
Abstract: Pentacoordinate silyl encolate and the use thereof as an initiator without a co-catalyst, in the polymerization of methacrylic monomers, such as methacrylate esters.
Abstract: Incoming data messages to a system having a plurality of channels are assigned for processing to one of the channels to share the processing load more or less equally among all the channels of the system. Each channel receives messages by means of a communications link for processing. Included in each channel is a disk drive for a storage medium, a disk controller and peripheral controllers for input/output equipment as required. Each channel of the system also includes a data processor. A message is received from the communication link of any of the channels, which message is identified by the data processor of that channel. The processor then evaluates the number of messages waiting to be processed in each of the other channels for assignment to a channel having the least number of messages on the processing list. The processor considers only on-line channels in this assignment selection.
Abstract: Certain sulfonylurea compounds with oxysulfonyl-, thiosulfonyl- or aminosulfonyl-containing groups are useful as pre- and/or post-emergence herbicides.
Abstract: .beta.-Substituted polyfluoroethyl compounds, process for the preparation thereof, copolymers thereof, compound intermediates, and process therefor. The copolymers are useful as ion exchange resins or structural foams.
Abstract: The oxidation of carbon fibers from pitch is carried out directly by winding the spun fibers on to a spinning spool or bobbin, said spool comprising an open ended, porous, non-expanding or collapsible spool. The spun carbon fibers are wound on such a spinning spool so as to leave open areas between fiber bundles. A mixture of an inert gas such as air or nitrogen containing a minor amount of oxygen is used as the oxidizing gas. Oxidation is carried out in a closed zone, e.g. an oven, for a period of time of at least 4 hours at a temperature that is initially below the glass transistion temperature of the carbon fibers and is slowly increased over the oxidation time to a maximum of about 340.degree. C. The gaseous oxidation atmosphere is continuously recycled and passed through the spool to ensure that the fibers are essentially completely oxidized.
Abstract: A spinnerette for mesophase pitch includes a spinnerette body with a plurality of mesophase pitch fiber forming channels through it. Each bore includes a capillary bore section at the outlet side of the spinnerette body, a wider diameter counter bore at the inlet side and an entrance between the wider bore and capillary bore sections with the entrance wall defining a relatively flat angle for increasing the proportion of tangential cross-section pitch fibers, as compared with radial cross-section fibers.
Abstract: The fill slat for use in water cooling towers comprises a perforated body portion, a central longitudinal rib, and downwardly inclined side flanges. The rib is inverted v-shape in cross-section and functions as a rigidifying beam for the fill slat. The rib is open at its bottom, thereby permitting a plurality of fill slats to be nested to reduce shipping costs. The side flanges are formed with slots, certain of which are angled, to receive the supporting wires. A holding clip can be additionally provided to reduce rolling or longitudinal movement of the fill slat.
Abstract: A chamber block for a centrifuge is provided with an inlet orifice, inlet channel, outlet channel and outlet orifice through which a sample of cells and supernatant may be centrifuged onto a deposition surface. The chamber block includes a recess sized to receive a plug of an absorbent material which withdraws excess supernatant from the deposition surface.
Abstract: Melt-fusible polyimides based on pyromellitic dianhydride and at least one defined aromatic diamine are useful in making low-void composites and thermoplastic tapes, which can be fabricated into articles such as, for example, aircraft and autobody panels, printed circuit boards, etc. Some of these polyimides are melt-processible and can be fabricated by conventional procedures such as extrusion and injection molding.
Abstract: Resorcinol monobenzoate is reacted through the hydroxyl group preferably with an acrylic prepolymer containing glycidyl methacrylate. The product can be used in coating compositions and films to give highly ultraviolet absorbent properties.
Abstract: A mold assembly for producing a plastic container having internal compartments separated by partitions. A male mold is slidably moveable into a female mold and includes a plurality of upstanding cores to form the container with injectors provided to force plastic melt between the molds and between the cores. A plurality of side locking members are reciprocably mounted in the cores and when extended contact adjacent cores limiting relative motion therebetween. The locking members form holes in the partitions formed between the cores. The locking members are withdrawn only after the plastic melt is cooled.
Abstract: Antihypertensive 4-phenyl-5-(4-methylsulfonylphenyl)-.alpha.,.alpha.-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1 H-imidazole-2-methanol derivatives are useful in the treatment of hypertension.
Abstract: Antibacterial activity is exhibited by 2-azetidinones having a 3-acylamino substituent and a 1-substituent of the formula ##STR1## (or a salt or ester thereof).

Abstract: An internal combustion engine shutdown device is disclosed. The device stops an engine running at high speed in a controlled fashion when a condition arises in a peripheral device or apparatus being driven or operated by the engine. The device provides a relay, a fuel shutoff control, an engine throttle control, and a timer. Upon the receipt of an external signal such as the de-energizing of a conventional "kill switch", the device immediately reduces engine speed to idle by the throttle control and delays the stopping of the engine by the timer until a pre-set time period has passed. Once the time period has elapsed so that the engine is in the proper state to be stopped, the fuel to the engine is cut off by the fuel shutoff control. The device is particularly adapted to the operation of an internal combustion engine used in a center pivot irrigation system.

Abstract: An air injection device for carburetors which independently supplements the air provided by the usual air filter inputs to the carburetor systems of the internal combustion engines of the modern vehicles.
Abstract: Apparatus for opening aligned sliding leaves of furniture, wherein the or each sliding leaf comprises, at its upper part, an upper track for receiving a first roller having a vertical axis and connected to a movable part of a slide guide fixedly secured to or integral with the furniture. The movable part is movable in a direction substantially perpendicular to the plane of the leaf and is provided with an engagement member, such as a pin, coupled with a first pulley connected, by means of an inextensible, flexible element, to a second pulley in a lower part of the furniture. The second pulley is supported by a horizontal shaft extending across the width of the door leaf and is provided at its ends with a pair of arms, acting upon lateral trolleys supported by pairs of rollers sliding in guides rigidly secured to the furniture. The trolleys carry a U-section member in which run horizontal-axis second rollers and vertical-axis third rollers, rigidly connected to the door leaf by means of a lower support member.
