Abstract: An arrangement for withdrawing supernatant from a deposition surface is provided for use with a cytocentrifuge chamber block. The block receives an absorbent plug in a recess provided therein. The plug is restrained from movement past a predetermined point until a predetermined insertion force corresponding to a predetermined rotor speed is imposed on the plug. At that time a resilient restraining arrangement deflects to permit the plug to advance with respect to the block. The restraining arrangement preferably takes the form of tines resiliently mounted to the plug.
Abstract: A protective-hood fastening for portable angled grinders is disclosed. The protective hood is attached by a tensioning strap and screw to, and can be released from, a spindle collar on the gear housing. A securing element prevents the hood from slipping off the housing and into the grinding disk.
Abstract: A liquid pipetting system for aspirating and dispensing small samples of fluid and diluents. The pipetting system consists of a coaxial needle serving as the pipette tip and a metering system to control the fluids. Precise dispensing of small amounts of liquid from the inner needle is made possible by surrounding the sample liquid with a miscible diluting liquid thereby establishing a controlled interface and conveying the sample liquid into the receiving chamber with that miscible diluting liquid.
Abstract: A digital programmable packet switch synchronizer receives a digital input data stream which includes a unique digital word. The unique digital word is stored in the synchronizer in a random access memory. A group of the most recently received data bits are stored in memory along with a blanker bit for each data bit. The blanker bit determines the valid or invalid status of the data bit. During each bit period of the incoming data stream, the stored data bits are serially compared with the stored unique word. A count is made of the number of noncomparisons between the stored data bits and the stored unique word bits when the data bit is valid. If the number of noncomparisons does not exceed a programmed error limit, an output signal is generated to indicate detection of the unique word. A similar count is carried out for detection of the inverse to the unique word.

Abstract: A multiple mower arrangement for use on a tractor, comprising a principal mower having at least one rotary blade. A power shaft extends approximately the full lateral width of the principal mower, and delivers power to the rotary blades of such mower. A swingarm mower equipped with a rotary blade is hingedly supported by a hollow arm on the outboard end of the principal mower, with the arm being in turn supported by a hollow hinge. A rotary power shaft extends through the arm and hinge, such that rotary power can be effectively transmitted without the use of belts from the power shaft to the blade of the swingarm mower. A bias arrangement normally biases the swingarm mower into an outwardly extending operative position, with such bias being overcome at such time as the swingarm mower contacts a tree, fencepost, or other fixed object, with power being continuously supplied to the blade of the swingarm mower throughout its full range of operating positions.
Abstract: An automatic pill dispenser for dispensing medical pills having different prescribed administration schedules includes a plurality of pill storage compartments each capable of holding more than one pill, an automatic release mechanism for dispensing pills at predetermined time intervals corresponding with their respective administration schedules, and a pill receptacle coupled to a pill detector such that a pill dispensed from the pill dispenser and received by the receptacle causes the pill dispenser to generate a signal to alert the patient to take the dispensed medicine. Twelve storage compartments, arranged in a ring about a vertically rotating wheel, are preloaded by a patient with all pills prescribed to be taken during a 24-hour period. The patient loads pills into individual storage compartments according to a loading code corresponding to the respective administration schedules of the pills.

Abstract: Television signals generated at a transmitting station are digitized and are then transformed into bit groups by a precoder reducing their information content by eliminating redundancies, as by comparing each pixel of a given frame with the homologous pixel of the immediately preceding frame and, upon detecting their equality, emitting a particular reduction code in lieu of an otherwise emitted luminance signal. A message encoder following the precoder generates outgoing data words which may comprise a luminance value accompanied by an integrity code, a changeover signal accompanied by a reduction code, a numerical value specifying the number of consecutive pixels remaining unchanged from the preceding frame, or a synchronizing code. The bits of the outgoing data words are serialized and are temporarily stored in a buffer register in order to be sent at regular intervals, via a communication channel, to a receiving station where a message decoder regroups them in their original order.
