Abstract: For optically measuring black carbon in the atmosphere an aerosol particle collection area of a filter tape is continually illuminated by an illumination source with light of one or more wavelengths. Transmitted and reflected light fractions are measured at several precisely defined angles or angle ranges, such as of 0°, 120 to 140° and 165° to 180° by photodetectors arranged correspondingly relative to the illumination source, achieving maximum symmetry for the angles to be measured. The loading of the filter tape collection area with light absorbing aerosol material is continually determined from the change in the optical properties of the collection area with the aid of known algorithms from transmissivities and reflectivities as detected.

Abstract: The present invention relates to compositions and preparative process of partially or fully neutralized mixtures of carboxylate functionalized ethylene high copolymers or terpolymers (Mw between 80,000 and 500,000) with carboxylate functionalized ethylene low copolymers (Mw between 2,000 and 30,000) and organic acid salts and injection or compression molded applications such as golf ball components thereof.
Abstract: The invention is directed to a material and a method of producing the material that is unaffected by the low-temperature degradation, humidity-enhanced phase transformation typical of yttria-stabilized zirconia in general, as well as of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline ceramic (Y-TZP). Because of the high fracture toughness and high mechanical strength, this class of materials is widely used, including as implants, such as for the packaging material for small implantable neural-muscular sensors and stimulators. The destructive phase transformation is eliminated by converting the surface to stable cubic or T-prime zirconia by post-densification thermal treatment in a cation-rich milieu.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a thermally sensitive array device for detecting a presence of a target object in a surveillance area. The device comprises a plurality of at least two thermally sensitive sensors provided in an array arrangement, each thermally sensitive sensor being associated with one of a corresponding plurality of at least two surveillance spots comprised in the surveillance area. Each thermally sensitive sensor comprises a sensitive element adapted to absorb a portion of thermal infrared radiation emitted from one of said plurality of targets located inside the surveillance cone corresponding to the thermally sensitve sensor. Thermally sensitive sensor can be thermopiles, Bolometers or any other type. Electronic circuits in each thermally sensitive sensor are adapted to measure a signal generated in the thermally sensitive sensor as a consequence of the temperatures of the target.

Abstract: An energy control device comprises a switching device and a control system. The switching device is provided with a switch contact adjacent to a counter-contact on one side and to a counter-stopper on the other side thereof. The counter-stopper is arranged on an springy arm which is made of a round steel spring-wire and has on one end thereof a spiral spring segment. The spiral spring segment makes it possible to mount the springy arm on an elongated supporting rod in such a way that it is displaceable in a longitudinal direction, thereby displaying a certain clearance. The springy arm is applied with the other end thereof to an eccentric disc, thereby making it possible to modify the position and consequently place of the counter-stopper.
Abstract: A gas sensor of the type having a housing defining a chamber within which light is transmitted from a source to a detector through an optical path, includes internal mirror portions having part ellipsoidal shape. Light is transmitted from a source to a detector via the reflective portions. The detector is arranged to sense light only from a limited range of angles, such that only light transmitted through a defined optical path reflected off the two reflective portions from the source reaches the sensor. This ensures that there is a constant optical path from the source to the detector, which improves the signal to noise ratio of the device.
Abstract: One embodiment of the invention concerns an electrical household apparatus, for example a washing machine, equipped with a control device in the form of a panel, said panel comprising a display device for providing visual data to the user. Said panel (10) is made of a material which is substantially opaque when it has a normal thickness (14). One area specific to the display device (15) comprises at least one transparency zone (20) wherein the thickness of the panel material is reduced relative to the thickness of the material outside said transparency zone such that light from a light source (16), for example a light-emitting diode, located behind the panel may pass through said transparency zone. Such a configuration provides backlighted panels having a closed surface. In another embodiment, the control device is in the form of a turning knob (70, 80).
