Abstract: Improved catalytic process for the alkylation of aromatic substrates, the improved process characterized in that the catalyst is a metal cation salt of a perfluorosulfonic acid polymer having an equivalent weight of about 500 to about 20,000, the metal cation having a log K.sub.11 greater than -10.
Abstract: A free floating plastic channel for sedimentation field flow fractionation is suspended in a centrifuge rotor filled with a compensating liquid. The channel is constructed of a plastic central hub assembly fitted with a plastic outer ring preferably having a lower density than the hub. The outer ring contains a shallow channel on its radially inner surface and is interference-fitted to the inner ring to insure a liquid tight seal at zero force field. With the liquid totally surrounding the hub-outer ring assembly, stresses on the plastic parts are essentially equalized even under high force fields and leakage from the channel at the hub-ring interface is greatly reduced.
Abstract: A ceramic tile has its rear uniformly configured as small frusto-conical or frusto-pyramidal tapered projections 2 of constant height, thus eliminating internal stresses during firing, eliminating zones of different color tone on the front face, and improving the gripping coefficient when laying.A portion of the projections 2, in groups of at least two, are taller to form feet 3 for resting during stacking.

Abstract: Vapor deposition of doped silica in a reaction chamber on a rotating supporting surface, in the manufacture of a preform for the drawing of an optical fiber, is accompanied by the continuous admixture of deuterium with a flow of carrier gas, specifically oxygen, by which the reactants are transported to the reaction chamber. An isotopic substitution of deuterium for the hydrogen of hydroxyl groups in the reaction products shifts the major absorption peaks to wavelengths outside the minimum-attenuation range of 0.7 to 1.6.mu. used for fiber-optical signaling. The proper ratio of deuterium to carrier gas is maintained with the aid of a mixer having two compartments separated by a perforated diaphragm or a thin metallic foil, one compartment being connected to a deuterium tank while the other communicates with a conduit through which the vapors entrained by the carrier gas pass to the reaction chamber.

Abstract: A three-dimensional network of rigid, porous hollow filament of inorganic material is provided which has high flux capability in treating fluid for separation purposes. The network is made by coating a continuous combustible core with a paste of the inorganic material, fabricating the resultant coated core into the network, followed by firing the coated core to burn off the core and sinter the coating to rigid porous hollow filament.

Abstract: The shock absorber is of the type in which there is gas under pressure in the interspace between the two coaxial tubes or cylinders. In order to prevent the gas under pressure from reaching the upper part of the shock absorber and at the same time allow the hydraulic fluid which has been drawn to the upper part of the shock absorber to descend to the interspace, an annular gasket of elastomeric or similar material with an inverted U- or V-shaped cross-section is arranged in the upper part of the interspace to form an annular channel which is open at the bottom and defined by two annular lips engaging with the inner cylinder and the outer cylinder respectively. One of these lips may separate elastically from the respective cylinder so that oil may descend into the interspace. This deformable lip engages the respective cylinder in an annular zone below the rim at the upper end of the inner cylinder.

Abstract: A female electrical terminal for receiving round or square pins having a rib cage mounted on a spine. The rib cage has at least four pair of curved cantilevered beams attached at one end to the spine and forming an acute angle with the spine.
Abstract: Low molecular weight isocyanate-functional acrylic polymers prepared by direct reaction of the monomers, e.g., 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate, in the presence of a mercaptan chain-transfer agent are good coating materials applicable to a substrate as by spraying and curable by contact with moisture.
Abstract: A process and cell for electrolysis of alkali metal halides, especially sodium chloride, are described, wherein the anolyte and catholyte compartments are separated by a fluorinated ion-exchange membrane whose surface facing the catholyte compartment is of a polymer having carboxylic functionality and which has a roughness which does not exceed 1.5 microns. Such a cell and process operate at high current efficiency, low voltage and low power consumption.
Abstract: A windmill having a gearbox, tail and wheel is disclosed in which a mast is secured to the windmill and is rotatable as a unit within a mast housing secured to the tower. A pull-out assembly exerts an axial downward force on a pull-out tube concentrically positioned within the mast. A mounting hub on the drive shaft supports the wheel at taper bearing surfaces. The individual sails are adjustably secured to one or more concentric, segmented rings attached to the mounting hub by radial spokes or braces.
Abstract: An extensible head for seizing and reorienting a group of objects includes a frame to which is swivelled a member which drives swivelled first links to cause the translation of carriages on which are rotatably mounted supports for gripping members, these supports being connected to a plate by second links swivelled to the plate and to lugs provided on the supports.
Abstract: A device for providing an indication of the position of a material (80) within a conveyor system includes a dancer roller (83) for engaging the material (80) and bidirectionally varying its angular position relative to a preselected axis, and a transducer (10) operatively connected via a shaft (15) to the dancer roller (83). Transducer (10) includes a plurality of light emitting diodes (21,22) and phototransistors (23,24) mounted in spatial relation upon a plate (33) perpendicularly fixed to the shaft (15) and adjustably carrying a plurality of light cams (34,35) interposed between the light emitting diodes (21,22) and the phototransistors (23,24). As the angular position of shaft (15) is varied by dancer roller (83), illumination upon phototransistors (23,24) similarly proportionally varies.
Abstract: A request generator, when operated by a telephone subscriber or by a processor at an exchange, briefly interrupts an established talking connection to send a trigger signal toward a participating station for activating an identity transmitter associated therewith to send back a characteristic code individually assigned to that station. The code, which may consist of up to 16 bytes, is fed to an identity receiver at the inquiring station or at the exchange for visual display and/or recordal. A subscriber's request generator is preferably disposed downstream of the corresponding identity transmitter, as seen from the subscriber station, and responds to an activating signal emitted by that subscriber with a frequency outside the voice band for sending out the trigger signal, thereby preventing a response to this identity transmitter.

Abstract: In preparation for reclaiming and recycling the material of construction of a plastic bottle, the friction-fitting base, if any, and bottle cap can be separated from the bottle body by cutting through the cap and base. The cap and base are cut in a plane in which the bottle's longitudinal axis lies. Alternatively, two cuts are made in parallel planes that are also parallel to the bottle's longitudinal axis.
Abstract: The invention relates to a variable-configuration head for seizing and handling objects, which head comprises a frame from which are suspended supports for seizing members through the medium of three links swivelled both to the supports and to the frame, the supports being geometrically equivalent to two identical articulated parallelograms having opposite angles at one common vertex, so as to allow the supports to be joined together transversely or longitudinally to modify the configuration of the group of objects held by the seizing members.
