  • Patent number: 4412720
Abstract: A light source of rectangular outline, such as a semiconductor laser, is coupled to a light receiver of circular outline to be illuminated thereby, such as an end of an optical fiber, by an anamorphotic system including a pair of spherical lenses and an afocal pair of cylindrical lenses interposed in a telecentric field therebetween. When the system is used for measuring the attenuation of a fiber by the back-scattering technique, a semireflecting prism inserted between the cylindrical lenses and the fiber-side spherical lens directs part of the returning beam toward a photodetector; the effect of spurious reflections at the fiber end may be minimized by the use of a polarization-sensitive Glan prism and/or by the positioning of a flat transparent plate in front of the fiber end.

  • Patent number: 4412835
Abstract: A process, apparatus and system for making a sterile connection between two thermoplastic resin tubes is disclosed. Side sections of the adjacently placed tubes are melted by passing a heated elongated body therethrough to form a molten seal between a surface of the heated body and the adjacent side sections, thereby providing a seal between the interior and exterior of said tubes. The resulting molten tube sections are urged together as they are slid off an end of the elongated body. As the thermoplastic resin cools a sterile weld is formed.

  • Patent number: 4412325
Abstract: The equipment disclosed in the present invention provides means for SSB multiplexing and demultiplexing base-band signals, equal in number to a power of two, digital signal processing techniques. The frequency modulation process of the base-band signals is partly performed with a discrete Fourier Transform (D.F.T.), the dimension of which is appreciably reduced with respect to the number of signals to be multiplexed, and partly with modulators (multipliers), some of which are of simple construction and which are fewer in number than the number of signals to be multiplexed. Filtering is effected with a set of filters with different frequency repetition periods and which, when cascade connected, from a pass-band filter equal to the frequency band which characterizes every base-band signal. The frequency repetition period of the entire filter is equal to the sampling frequency of the multiplexed signal.

  • Patent number: 4411681
Abstract: A method and apparatus for manufacturing glass bottles and more specifically an apparatus and a method for forming parisons is disclosed. At least one blank mold defines a mold cavity having an opening at its upper end for receiving a premeasured gob of molten glass from a loading cavity member. A plunger having a volume of at least 15% of the volume of the mold cavity is completely extended into the mold cavity prior to the reception of the molten glass. The molten glass is moved downwardly from said loading cavity member into the mold cavity. Fluid force presses the molten glass against the walls of the mold cavity and against the extended plunger. The opening in the mold is closed by a baffle and the plunger retracted. Compressed air is applied through the neck of the parison to expand the parison outwardly against the mold cavity and a mold surface defined by the baffle means. The parison is then separated for further processing in the bottle making operation.

  • Patent number: 4410287
Abstract: Making characters on the periphery of a rotatable marking wheel are selectively rotated into marking position relative to the surface of a billet, ingot, bar, slab or the like by an indexing motor drivingly connected to the marking wheel. The marking wheel is rotatably mounted in a housing that is pivoted toward and away from the billet by an arm structure suspended from a frame. The frame is movable on a support transversely of the pivotal path of the marking wheel housing. The frame is laterally advanced incrementally by an indexing ratchet to move the marking wheel from one marking position to the next marking position to permit the marking wheels to stamp the billet with a series of characters. After the billet is marked with a selected character, the stepping motor rotates the marking wheel until the next desired character is in a position for marking. The frame is then laterally advanced to position the desired character opposite the billet.
