Abstract: Improvement in the catalytic dehydrohalogenation of a halogenated hydrocarbon to an ethylenically unsaturated product with aqueous alkali in a series of reactors in a cascade arrangement, wherein the fresh alkali feed is relocated from the first reactor to a reactor subsequent to the first, and partly spent alkali solution from the last reactor is recirculated to the first reactor, while the ethylenically unsaturated product is recovered from the effluent from the last reactor, and waste brine is removed from the effluent from the reactor immediately preceding that to which fresh alkali is fed. In this manner, the amount of both the alkali and the catalyst can be reduced, and the conversion is increased. Dehydrochlorination of 3,4-dichlorobutene-1 gives chloroprene, which is a valuable monomer for making synthetic elastomers.

Abstract: A machine for finishing substantially cup-shaped blanks that are to comprise the bodies of saucepans or the like has a table on which the blanks slide horizontally, bottom wall down. They are advanced along the table from station to station by a shuttle conveyor comprising opposite horizontal clamping plates that converge edgewise to engage opposite side wall portions of blanks, move forwardly while converged, then diverge and move rearward to an idle position. At one station there is a hole in the table, and each blank is delivered concentrically onto a freely rotatable tail stock which is in a lowered position in said hole with its top surface level with the table surface. The tail stock rises to clamp the bottom wall of the blank against a concentric continuously rotating driver head spaced above the table.
Abstract: A terminal for establishing electrical contact with the conductive shield of a cable having an aluminized Mylar.RTM. layer surrounded by an outer braid and then a layer of insulation forming a jacket. A ferrule is inserted between the outer braid and the Mylar.RTM. and is locked in place by an insulator displacement device which penetrates the insulation jacket to establish electrical contact with the shield.
Abstract: A thermionic cathode (FIG. 1) comprises a porous matrix of tungsten (4) impregnated with alkaline earth activator.A coating (5) 1 .mu.m thick is formed on the matrix (4). The coating is of .sigma. phase alloy of molybdenum and osmium.Alternative .sigma. phase alloys are disclosed, and various methods of making cathodes are disclosed.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a lubricant for use in the drawing and ironing of black plate steel during the manufacture of enclosed containers such as cans. The lubricant comprises an aqueous solution of an active component, such as a major portion of molybdenum disulfide, together with minor amounts of waxes and other materials. In performing the method of the present invention, a lubricant system is employed. The lubricant system comprises a dual lubricant coating. The first, or outside, coating is applied to that portion of the black plate steel which ultimately becomes the outside surface of the can body. The outside coating is applied, such as by spraying or gravure or offset printing, at a rate of about 25 to about 200 milligrams per square foot of steel surface. This coating is dried, as through the use of a heat source, such as infrared heat or hot air. A second, or inside, coating is applied to that portion of the black plate steel which ultimately becomes the inside surface of the can body.
Abstract: A radio frequency switch which has input and output diodes and a quarter length impedance inverter interconnecting the diodes. A switch drive signal is clamped to a predetermined voltage between drive signals so that the impedance with respect to the input source remains substantially constant during the entire switch operation.
