Abstract: A process is disclosed for the polymerization and interpolymerization of propylene, either alone or in admixture with ethylene, to produce polymers and copolymers of propylene. The catalyst employed is a coordination complex comprising at least some divalent titanium, or other transition metal element in lower valent state. The catalysts are prepared by mixing a higher valent titanium (or other transition metal) halide or titanate ester with a reducing agent, which can be any organometallic compound, such as a metal alkyl or aryl, including Grignard reagents, a metal hydride, or a metal including zinc and metals above zinc in the electromotive series. Hydrocarbon media can be employed advantageously for the preparation of the cataysts and for the polymerizations. The polymeric products (both homopolymers and copolymers) are linear and of high molecular weight and are useful as plastics, fibers and elastomers and for production of blends with polyethylene.

Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparing resin extended pigments containing from 10% to 75% and preferably 25% to 50% by weight, based on the amount of pigment and resin present. The crude pigment and resin are premilled dry, such as in a ball mill, in a manner equivalent to that used to prepare small particle size highly aggregated pigment. Following premilling the pigment and resin are milled in an organic liquid capable of ripening the pigment particles to pigmentary size or simply improving their crystallinity which organic liquid at 30.degree. C., can dissolve no more than 5 g/l and preferably no more than 2 g/l of the resin.
Abstract: Improved vanadium/phosphorus oxide catalyst for the vapor phase oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride, and the use of said catalyst to prepare maleic anhydride, said catalyst containing the nonpost-deposited promoter comprising silicon and at least one of indium, antimony and tantalum.
Abstract: A process, apparatus and system for making a sterile connection between two thermoplastic resin tubes is disclosed. The tubes are cut by a hot cutting means so as to form a molten interface between the tubes and the cutting means. The tubes are aligned with each other and slid off an edge of the cutting means while being urged together. As the thermoplastic resin cools a sterile weld is formed. The cutting means should either be thin or have a sharp edge where the aligned tubes are slid off and joined.
Abstract: In the separation of traces of halogens and sulfur from a halogen- and/or sulfur-containing gas stream wherein the gas stream is contacted with a wash liquid to absorb the halogens and sulfur, the improvement which comprises including in the wash liquid heavy metal ions capable of forming difficultly soluble halides and sulfides. Preferably the heavy metal ions are silver or copper, and the insoluble heavy metal sulfide and/or halide is removed from the wash liquid which is recirculated. Almost quantitative removal is achieved in as little as 1 second of gas-wash liquid contact.

Abstract: A delay blasting cap having improved uniformity and predictability of delay time, and less susceptible to timing change as a result of a change in the medium or temperature surrounding the cap, has a polyolefin or polyfluorocarbon carrier capsule or tube for the delay charge, and preferably a rigid metal capsule holding the delay charge in place. Preferably, the delay carrier is a polyethylene capsule, which inhibits the priming charge from penetrating into the delay charge during the assembling of the cap.
Abstract: The 7S and 11S proteins of vegetable proteins may be effectively fractionated and isolated by selectively extracting 7S proteins from an isoelectrically precipitated mixture of 7S and 11S protein in the presence of water-soluble salts. The initial 7S extraction is typically conducted at a pH 5.0-5.6. An enriched 11S fraction is recovered by separating the water-insoluble 11S protein from the water-soluble enriched 7S extract.
