  • Patent number: 4220205
Abstract: A fracture that conducts fluid within the confines of an underground rock formation without the need for particulate proppant materials to hold opposing fracture faces apart is created by a method in which a long portion of a hole drilled into the formation has its axis slanted with respect to the directions of the principal stresses, and is pressurized rapidly over its entire length with fluid, preferably by detonating an explosive therein.A hypothetical fracture plane is defined as that plane containing the axis of the hole which is under the least compressive normal stress. When the orientation of the hole axis is such that there is a substantial shear stress on the hypothetical fracture plane, but the normal stress thereon does not greatly exceed the minimum principal stress, the fracture created lies close to the hypothetical fracture plane, and is conductive to fluids.

  • Patent number: 4220389
Abstract: A zero insertion force circuit card connector having a fixed base and a movable housing. At least one flexible inside terminal and one outside terminal are fixedly supported by the base in opposed spaced relation to each other. A spring biases the inside terminal from an open position toward the outside terminal to a closed position embracing the edge of a circuit card. An expandable tube located between the housing and the base can be expanded to move the housing against the bias of the spring thereby relieving the tension on the inside terminal.

  • Patent number: 4220824
Abstract: Sensors SE and drivers AT electrically linked to various points of communication equipment, e.g. in a telephone system, are periodically explored by an interface linking them with a processor, under the control of a time base successively reading out their addresses during synchronous phases of respective time slots of a recurrent frame also having other phases set aside for the asynchronous exchange of data with the processor. The interface comprises a first and a second read/write memory ME.sub.1, ME.sub.2 respectively storing information relating to the evaluation of incoming signals from the sensors and to the sending of outgoing signals to the drivers, the contents of these memories being updated from time to time during asynchronous phases allocated to communication with the processor. The evaluation of incoming signals is performed in a first logic network IN, with the aid of integrating circuitry including a read-only memory ROM.sub.1 inserted in a feedback loop of the incoming-signal memory ME.sub.

  • Patent number: 4219711
Abstract: A puffer interrupter has two axially spaced movable pistons fixed to the movable contact. A fixed barrier is disposed between the two pistons and a further fixed barrier is positioned at the end of the cylinder chamber. The two fixed barriers form three variable volume chambers with the two movable pistons. As the interrupter is opened, the central chamber formed between the end movable piston and fixed barrier between the two pistons reduces in volume to generate an increasing pressure while the two volumes on either side of the central volume increase in volume to produce a decrease in pressure. Gas then flows axially through the separating contact from the decreased volume central chamber to the outer reduced-pressure chambers. An auxiliary piston is formed within the central chamber and can increase the central chamber volume when the pressure within the central chamber exceeds a given value due to blockage of the nozzle by high arc-generated pressures.

  • Patent number: 4219802
Abstract: A scanning barrier which can detect and discriminate objects which are within the scanned area. A transmitter on one side of the scanned area transmits a laminar barrage of electromagnetic microwaves across the scanned area. The laminar barrage of electromagnetic microwaves have a thin width and a predetermined height. A receiver across the scanned area receives the microwaves. The receiver is formed of a plurality of vertically adjacent elemental receivers which divide the laminar barrage into a series of horizontal slices. A logic circuit is connected to each of the elemental receivers and can detect the interruption of the laminar barrage to that elemental receiver.

  • Patent number: RE30378
Abstract: Polymers are isolated from their dispersions in liquid media in a twin-screw extruder, wherein the screws in the feed area are intermeshing and fully wiping each other and the extruder bore, the polymer dispersion or latex (which is coagulated in the first zone) being conveyed to a high pressure seal zone, liquid being forced upstream and out of the extruder, and the polymer being conveyed through the seal, into a reduced pressure zone, where most remaining liquid is removed, and finally into a pumping zone from which it is extruded. The invention avoids high pressure pumping of polymer dispersions and also is applicable to dispersions of sticky thermoplastic or elastomeric materials, which have caused considerable difficulties in the past.
