  • Patent number: 4190695
Abstract: A lightweight composite fabric characterized by high retention of fiber content during initial laundering and exceptionally high strength as measured close to the edge of the fabric with cover and fabric aesthetics equivalent to conventional fabrics having 50% higher basis weight are produced by hydraulically needling short staple fibers and a substrate of continuous filaments formed into an ordered cross-directional array. The individual continuous filaments of the array are well spread and separated so that they have a spaced-apart relationship allowing interentangling of the short staple fibers with the continuous filaments to form more than about two reversals in the staple fibers per cm of staple fiber length between the faces of the fabric. The staple fibers have a linear density of less than about 0.3 tex per filament, are from about 0.5 cm to about 1 cm in length and comprise about 20% to about 50% of the weight of the composite fabric.

  • Patent number: 4190530
Abstract: Samples to be analyzed, such as physiological fluids (blood, urine, etc.) may be processed using centrifugal techniques. The sample is centrifugally passed through a separation column to extract the desired component from the aqueous phase. Next, the extracted component is washed free of extraneous materials and then eluted from the separating column by centrifugally passing a suitable solvent therethrough. The aqueous phase and extracted components are collected in separate containers. To facilitate this method, an apparatus is provided that accommodates switching between fluid flow paths in a centrifuge. The centrifuge utilizes a swinging bucket rotor which contains a separating column, the top end of which employs a fluid reservoir for holding the sample to be extracted. Fluids are passed through the separating column (a first flow path) from a central distributor in the centrifuge rotor while in operation.

  • Patent number: 4189451
Abstract: In the use of certain metal salts of the hemi-perester of maleic acid as catalysts for the polymerization and curing of ethylenically unsaturated monomers and of methyl methacrylate-containing syrups the addition of an activator such as sodium bisulfite provides a substantial reduction in the curing time. The process is relatively insensitive to the amount of filler used. The salts of maleic hemi-peresters, in combination with the activators, are also useful for polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers.
