  • Patent number: 4188315
Abstract: In the use of certain meal salts of the hemi-perester of maleic acid as catalysts for the polymerization and curing of ethylenically unsaturated monomers and of methyl methacrylate-containing syrups the addition of an activator such as sodium bisulfite provides a substantial reduction in the curing time. The process is relatively insensitive to the amount of filler used. The salts of maleic hemi-peresters, in combination with the activators, are also useful for polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers.

  • Patent number: 4186925
Abstract: A competitive toss game where each player has tossable play objects such as bean bags and there is a target apparatus with one or more receptacles each having a pivotally mounted flippable lid. Each lid is provided with an opening large enough for a bean bag to be tossed directly into the associated receptacle. The bean bags of each player bear an encoding or indicia, with the indicia being different for each player. Thus, the bean bags of one player may be one color and the bean bags of the other player may be a different color. The lids have different indicia on each side, the indicia on one side matching the indicia of one player's bean bags, the indicia on the other side matching the indicia of the other player's bean bags.

  • Patent number: 4187397
Abstract: To produce a signal simulating the characteristics of the average human voice, a basic periodic waveform with generally sinusoidal sections separated by level sections is passed through a first filter for substantially equalizing its frequency components and is then shaped in a second filter whose transfer function approximates that of the vocal tract in a frequency band of 0 to 4 kHz. The basic waveform fed to the first filter may be modulated in amplitude and/or recurrence period by a pseudorandom signal from an ancillary generator.

  • Patent number: 4186529
Abstract: Disclosed is a numerically controlled method of broad application but particularly useful for grinding cutting edges and clearance surfaces on cutting tools such as end mills and other similar tools. A programmable numerical servo-motor type control is described. All of the grinding operations are completed at a single station in a series of consecutive grinding operations performed by the same grinding wheel and during which the tool remains in the same work holder. The various cutting edges and clearance surfaces to be ground are both mathematically located and mathematically defined such that the grinding operations may be conducted under numerical control according to optimum wheel speed, feed, position and coolant conditions and with a wide range of independently and simultaneously movable axes. A grinding wheel wear compensation program and a coolant dispensing program are also numerically controlled in coordination with the grinding operations.

  • Patent number: 4186349
Abstract: A radio receiver is disclosed which measures the statistics of an interfering narrow band noise signal and from these statistics generates a function which when mixed at baseband with a data signal combined with the narrow band noise reduces the interfering effect of the noise signal. The interference eliminating function is generated by processing signals representing an approximation of the data, the covariance of the narrow band noise interference, the noise figure for the receiver and the amplitude of the data signal. As the function is generated it is input to a mixer together with the combined narrow band noise and data signal. Iterated processing improves the estimation for the noise statistics thereby improving the approximation for the resulting data signal. This further enhances the solution for the noise elimination function thereby still further improving the desired data signal, thus creating a positive improving feedback loop.

  • Patent number: 4185691
Abstract: A novel method for stimulating the flow of oil from the pay zone of a formation traversed by a bore hole which involves the conversion of liquid water into high pressure steam in situ in heat transfer proximity to the pay zone. A novel oil tool adapted to be lowered and suspended within the bore hole in proximity to the pay zone having an external elongated shell within which is contained means for the in situ generation of steam. The casing may be adapted to generate steam internally and allow that steam to pass through the shell and into contact with the pay zone at a predetermined high pressure, or to superheat highly pressurized water and allow it to pass through an orifice in the shell, at which time it immediately flashes to high pressure steam and disperses into the area of the pay zone. A novel electrical control system for the operation, regulation and malfunction-detection of the oil tool from the ground surface.

  • Patent number: 4185413
Abstract: A toy milkable figure representative of an animal of the type capable of dispensing milk. The figure has a pivotally mounted head which may be pushed downwardly from an upper position to a lower position where a mouth opening in the head is immersed in liquid. The figure has a pivotally mounted tail which may be pumped up and down to create a liquid pumping action. The figure has an udder that forms a liquid holding chamber and has one or more flexible and squeezable teats. When the head is lowered into the liquid supply and the tail pumped, liquid is drawn into the mouth opening and delivered into the udder chamber. A liquid intake limiting mechanism causes the head to automatically raise out of the liquid after a predetermined amount of pumping.

  • Patent number: 4185489
Abstract: The speedometer of a stationary vehicle is evaluated for accuracy and calibrated regardless of vehicle tire size. The powered driven wheel or wheels is/are disengaged from road contact and a detachable housing member with a permanent magnet therein is releasably threaded onto the tire valve stem. A sensor associated with a testing unit is positioned adjacent the housing member so that as the wheels are driven at selected speeds, as indicated by the vehicle speedometer, a train of electrical pulses derived from the sensor is delivered to the testing unit at a rate proportional to the wheel rotative speed. This pulse information, in conjunction with a compensated reference signal generated by a scaler circuit, is processed by computing circuitry in the testing unit resulting in a digital display indicating the actual vehicle speed. The scaler circuit includes a tire size selector providing the testing unit with a number of reference frequencies corresponding to a range of selectable tire sizes.

  • Patent number: 4185172
Abstract: Digitized samples of switching or supervisory signals in the form of specific frequency pairs, selected from n predetermined signaling frequencies, are received at a PCM terminal of a telephone exchange and fed to n frequency correlators, one for each signaling frequency used in the system, where the samples are multiplied by a sine function and a cosine function of the respective signaling frequency and the two products are integrated and vectorially added to form a resulting binary signal. The absolute value of the incoming-signal sample in each PCM time slot is multiplied in a pair of pseudo-correlators with two fixed values of approximately equal magnitude but opposite sign. A microcomputer compares the output signals of the several frequency correlators with a fixed threshold, or with an adaptive threshold derived from the output of one of the pseudo-correlaors if that threshold surpasses the fixed one.
