Abstract: A process for producing multi-layer coatings comprising a waterborne primer-surfacer layer and a topcoat applied thereto on substrates, in which a waterborne primer-surfacer layer is applied from a waterborne primer-surfacer to substrates and baked and then a topcoat is applied, wherein the waterborne primer-surfacer has a binder solids content with a hydroxyl number of 100 to 250 mg KOH/g and contains free or blocked polyisocyanate as a curing agent (crosslinking agent) for the hydroxy-functional binder(s) in a molar ratio of OH/NCO of more than 2:1 to 5:1, and wherein, after it has been applied and before baking, the waterborne primer-surfacer layer is allowed to evaporate for 30 to 300 seconds at 15 to 40° C.

Abstract: A cable comprises at least two cores stranded together, an expanded inner jacket layer, a substantially circular metallic armor partially contacting the inner jacket to form unfilled interstices outside the inner jacket, and a polymeric outer jacket. The expanded inner jacket substantially takes the shape of the periphery of the stranded cores, providing a non-circular cross section for the expanded inner jacket. A method of producing a cable comprises providing at least two cores, expanding a polymeric material, extruding the expanded polymeric material around the cores, and allowing the expanded polymeric material to collapse onto the cores. A substantially circular metallic armor is applied, resulting in a plurality of unfilled voids between the inner jacket and the metallic armor. An outer jacket is extruded on the metallic armor.

Abstract: The present invention describes a magnetic resonance imaging method wherein spatially resolved frequency sensitive image data are collected by means of free precession sequences employing very small radio frequency (RF) excitation pulses per unit time which result in highly frequency selective steady-state signals dominated by linear properties of the system, for which the superposition principle holds. By appropriate linear combination of steady state signals of N different frequencies, N resonance lines can be acquired simultaneously. This method allows spectroscopic recordings with very low RF power deposition which renders the method suitable for applications at high static magnetic field strengths.

Abstract: An electronic device includes a substrate and a well structure overlying the substrate and defining an array of openings. From a cross-sectional view, the well structure, at the openings has a negative slope. From a plan view, each opening corresponds to an organic electronic component. Each opening within the array of openings has a width and two immediately adjacent openings within the array of openings are connected by a channel having a width smaller than the width of each opening.
Abstract: The present invention is generally directed to optical signal devices that monitor the quality of an optical signal in a wavelength division multiplexing system by evaluating the information in the different wavelength channels.
Abstract: Novel addressing schemes for controlling electronically addressable displays include a scheme for rear-addressing displays, which allows for in-plane switching of the display material. Other schemes include a rear-addressing scheme which uses a retroreflecting surface to enable greater viewing angle and contrast. Another scheme includes an electrode structure that facilitates manufacture and control of a color display. Another electrode structure facilitates addressing a display using an electrostatic stylus. Methods of using the disclosed electrode structures are also disclosed. Another scheme includes devices combining display materials with silicon transistor addressing structures.

Abstract: A protective, biocompatible coating or encapsulation material protects and insulates a component or device intended to be implanted in living tissue. The coating or encapsulation material comprises a thin layer or layers of alumina, zerconia, or other ceramic, less than 25 microns thick, e.g., 5–10 microns thick. The alumina layer(s) may be applied at relatively low temperature. Once applied, the layer provides excellent hermeticity, and prevents electrical leakage. Even though very thin, the alumina layer retains excellent insulating characteristics. In one embodiment, an alumina layer less than about 6 microns thick provides an insulative coating that exhibits less than 10 pA of leakage current over an area 75 mils by 25 mils area while soaking in a saline solution at temperatures up to 80° C. over a three month period.
