Patent number: 7161049Abstract: A process is disclosed for purifying a hydrofluoropropane of undesirable C2–C4 olefinic and C1–C4 saturated chlorinated impurities, comprising the steps of: contacting a first mixture of hydrofluoropropane, olefinic impurity and saturated chlorinated impurity with hydrogen and hydrogen fluoride concurrently in the presence of a bifunctional catalyst, for example an alloy of gold and palladium supported on carbon, capable of catalyzing hydrogenation and fluorination. During the contacting step, olefinic impurity is converted to saturated hydrogenated derivative and/or saturated hydrofluorinated derivative, and saturated chlorinated impurity is converted to a saturated hydrodechlorinated derivative and/or saturated fluorinated derivative. The hydrofluoropropane thus formed is substantially free of both the olefinic and saturated chlorinated impurities and may be used as obtained or subject to further purification steps such as distillation to remove the process derivatives (e.g.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2003Date of Patent: January 9, 2007Assignee: E. Publication number: 20070003025Abstract: Rybena is both a system and a method that makes it feasible the communication between deaf, hearing impaired and mute persons and other people in general, including handicapped and those not similarly handicapped. The system makes use of some techniques in order to reduce the English language, written or spoken, to a formal text that can be distributed by electronic means and translated to ASL (American Sign Language). That reduced text is a meta-language that can be conveyed, using distinct communication channels, to varied devices, like cell phones and digital assistants, and presented in text, voice or animated ASL.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 10, 2005Publication date: January 4, 2007Applicant: INSITITUTO CENTRO DE PESQUISA E DESENVOLVIMENTO EMInventors: Clesio Alves, Jose Carlos Waeny

Publication number: 20070003962Abstract: The present invention relates to a Drosophila in vitro system which was used to demonstrate that dsRNA is processed to RNA segments 21-23 nucleotides (nt) in length. Furthermore, when these 21-23 nt fragments are purified and added back to Drosophila extracts, they mediate RNA interference in the absence of long dsRNA. Thus, these 21-23 nt fragments are the sequence-specific mediators of RNA degradation. A molecular signal, which may be their specific length, must be present in these 21-23 nt fragments to recruit cellular factors involved in RNAi. This present invention encompasses these 21-23 nt fragments and their use for specifically inactivating gene function. The use of these fragments (or chemically synthesized oligonucleotides of the same or similar nature) enables the targeting of specific mRNAs for degradation in mammalian cells, where the use of long dsRNAs to elicit RNAi is usually not practical, presumably because of the deleterious effects of the interferon response.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 26, 2006Publication date: January 4, 2007Applicants: Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Forderug der Wissenschaften E. Publication number: 20070005111Abstract: A method and apparatus for protecting an electronic implantable medical device prior to it being implanted in a patient's body. The apparatus affords protection against electronic component damage due to electrostatic discharge and/or physical damage due to improper handling. The apparatus is comprised of a circuit board having conductive surface means for receiving and releasably grasping the electrodes of the medical device to support the device's housing proximate to the surface of the circuit board. First and second conductive paths are formed on the circuit board extending between the first and second conductive surfaces for shunting electrostatic discharge currents to prevent such currents from passing through the device's electronic circuitry. The respective shunt paths include oppositely oriented diodes, preferably comprising diodes which emit light (i.e., LEDs) when current passes therethrough. Additionally, means are provided to enable functional testing of the medical device.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 8, 2006Publication date: January 4, 2007Applicant: Alfred E.
