Abstract: A novel polymorphism in the human PC-1 gene is characterized, which is associated with an increased predisposition to developing insulin resistance. The polymorphism affects heterozygous and homozygous carriers of the allele. The subject nucleic acids and fragments thereof, encoded polypeptides, and antibodies specific for the polymorphic amino acid sequence are useful in determining a genetic predisposition to insulin resistance. The encoded protein is useful in drug screening for compositions that affect the activity of PC-1 and insulin receptor activity or expression.

Abstract: Optical devices, such as couplers, isolators and filters, are important building blocks in most WDM systems, within which light from a fiber is collimated, processed, and then focused onto another fiber. Unfortunately, during the processing of the light the beam gets walked-off from its initial path. In order for the light to fully couple between the fibers it is imperative that this walk-off be accounted for. Conventional systems simply mount the focusing lens and output ferrule offset from the collimating lens and input ferrule to ensure good coupling. However, there are several advantages to positioning the collimating lens coaxial with the focusing lens. Accordingly, the present invention relates to a method for optically coupling fibers with coaxial lenses by rotating an angle polished end face of at least one (preferably two) of the ferrules and lenses relative to the other ferrules and lenses. A greater range of positions is obtained when two of the ferrule and/or the lens are rotated.
Abstract: The invention describes an apparatus for cooling and calibrating an extruded plastic profile (2) with a cooling tank (4) receiving a cooling liquid, with calibrating elements (5) disposed within the cooling tank (4) for the plastic profile (2) subjected to the cooling liquid, and with a draw-off device (7) which is disposed downstream of the cooling tank (4) in the draw-off direction of the plastic profile (2). In order to provide advantageous constructional conditions it is proposed that at least one damping device (9) is provided between the inlet-sided calibrating element (5) of the cooling tank (4) and the draw-off device (7), which damping device rests at least in sections in the zone of one circumference on the plastic profile (2).

Abstract: A process that can be used for sulfonating, sulfating, or sulfamating an organic compound is disclosed. The process can comprise, consist essentially of, or consist of, contacting the organic compound with sulfur trioxide under a condition sufficient to effect the sulfonation, sulfation, or sulfamation of the organic compound. The organic compound can be an aromatic compound, alcohol, carbohydrate, amine, amide, protein, or combinations of two or more thereof. The sulfur trioxide can be present in a complex comprising an inorganic support such as zeolite, silicalite, silica, titanosilicate, borosilicate, clay, aluminophosphate, and combinations of two or more thereof.

Abstract: This invention relates to a biocatalytic process to produce terephthalic acid and isophthalic acid from p-xylene and m-xylene, respectively. Terephthalic acid has been prepared by oxidizing p-xylene with bacteria belonging to the genus Burkholderia. Conversion of p-xylene into terephthalic acid is accomplished by a single bacterial strain that produces all of the requisite enzymes. In addition, this invention relates to the preparation of isophthalic acid from a mixture of m- and p-xylene.

Abstract: A process for forming a microgel which comprises a crosslinked core and a multiplicity of linear polymeric arms attached to the core, wherein the process comprises (a) first forming a halogen atom terminated prepolymer with a weight average molecular weight from 1,000 to 25,000 by polymerizing monoethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of an organic sulfonyl halide, an organic complexing agent and a transition metal (i.e., Cu, Ru, Ni, Re, Pd, Fe, or Rh); and (b) subsequently polymerizing the prepolymer with a mixture of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers and 0.5 to 60 mole percent, based on the total moles of monomer and prepolymer, of multi-olefinic polymerizable monomers to form a microgel with a weight average molecular weight of 10,000 to 100,000,000 and crosslinked core.

Abstract: The present invention describes a process for the application of a powder coating to a non-conductive substrate by first exposing the non conductive substrate to a combination of steam and heat at temperatures between 70° C. and 140° C. for a period between 5 seconds and up to 10 minutes, followed by electrostatic application of a powder coating to the substrate which is grounded; this simple and reliable pre-treatment method allows an efficient application of powder coatings to non-conductive substrates resulting in uniform and even deposition of the powder coating over the whole surface including edges and with no adverse effects on the subsequent curing of the powder film.
