Abstract: The present invention relates to a head mounted display which is constructed such that stereoscopic images can be seen on a liquid crystal display screen disposed adjacent to eyes, and more particularly, to an optical system for the head mounted display wherein image resolution can be enhanced and a distortion phenomenon caused by eye's movement can be minimized.
Abstract: An electrophoretic medium comprises a plurality of particles suspended in a suspending fluid, the particles being capable of moving through the fluid upon application of an electric field to the medium, the fluid having dissolved or dispersed therein a polymer having a number average molecular weight in excess of about 20,000, the polymer being essentially non-absorbing on the particles. The polymer improves the bistability of the display (i.e., the period for which a written image persist without the display being refreshed) but does not greatly increase the viscosity of the suspending fluid, thus keeping the switching time of the display within reasonable limits. The medium may be encapsulated, or may be in the form a polymer-dispersed electrophoretic medium.
Abstract: Alpha-olefins are manufactured in high yield and with very high selectivity by contacting ethylene with an iron complex of a selected 2,6-pyridinedicarboxaldehyde bisimine or a selected 2,6-diacylpyridine bisimine, and in some cases a selected activator compound such as an alkyl aluminum compound. Novel bisimines and their iron complexes are also disclosed. The &agr;-olefins are useful as monomers and chemical intermediates.

Abstract: The present invention describes a device for metering powder coatings and powder components for powder and liquid coatings, which comprises a storage vessel at the outlet of which is a free-swinging receiving vessel with a metering base, wherein the receiving vessel is connected to a vibration drive, wherein the distance between the outlet of the storage vessel and the metering base of the receiving vessel is dimensioned as a function of the bulk solids properties of the powder material, wherein the metering base of the receiving vessel is vibrated during metering, and a collecting vessel beneath the receiving vessel, wherein the metered powder material is collected in the collecting vessel.
Abstract: A system and method for protecting against battery overcharging is used with an automotive electrical system having an alternator that supplies an output voltage VOUT to a string of at least first and second series-connected rechargeable batteries, an equalizer coupled to at least the first and second batteries, and at least a higher voltage load or a lower voltage load connected across respective sets of batteries of the string. The voltage VOUT is regulated to a target value VTARGET, and this target value VTARGET is reduced when either the voltage V1 across the first battery exceeds a first threshold value T1 or when a voltage V2 across the second battery exceeds a second threshold value T2. In this way, both of the batteries are protected against over-voltage conditions. A warning signal is illuminated to indicate to a user when either of the batteries is outside of its normal operating range.
Abstract: The loss in delivered capacity (capacity fade) after cycling non-aqueous rechargeable lithium manganese oxide batteries at elevated temperatures can be greatly reduced by depositing a small amount of certain foreign metal species on the surface of spinel in the cathode. In particular the foreign metal species are from compounds having either bismuth, lead, lanthanum, barium, zirconium, yttrium, strontium, zinc or magnesium. The foreign metal species are introduced to the surface of spinel by moderately heating either an aqueous treated mixture or a dry mixture of ready-made spinel and the foreign metal compound.

Abstract: A system and method for providing external data-signal isolation, and signal-level information-preserving-data-transformations, to enable safe, operationally efficient, information sharing between protected information systems and networks and external, potentially hostile, information systems and networks which neutralizes any imbedded hostile executable codes such as viruses that may be in data-signals incoming from the external systems and networks. The system and method prevent untransformed external data-signals from entering protected systems and/or networks using an intermediate screen which is a computer hardware device. The intermediate screen is deployed between the protected systems and external systems and is used to process all incoming signals from the external system to obtain transformed data sets from which information is extracted before it is passed to the protected system.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing a gypsum-based substrate. The process includes the steps mixing gypsum and water to produce a gypsum slurry, providing a synthetic polymeric fibrous sheet on one side of a layer of the gypsum slurry, and adhering to the wet gypsum to the sheet with an adhesive strength of at least 7.5 lb. The present invention is also directed to a gypsum board comprised of first and second polymeric fibrous sheets adhered to opposite sides of a wet gypsum core, wherein the first surface of the first sheet and the first surface of the second sheet have pores containing set gypsum and the first and second sheets adhere to said wet gypsum core with an adhesive strength of at least 7.5 lb.
Abstract: A copolyester of the reaction product of: (a) one or more aromatic dicarboxylic acids or an ester thereof; (b) one or more aliphatic dicarboxylic acids or an ester thereof; and (c) isosorbide. The polyesters are useful to form articles of increased biodegradability.
Abstract: A device for the evaporation of volatile substances, in particular of insecticides and/or aromatics, is disclosed having a housing containing a heating element, with a container for the volatile substance disposed in the housing, a wick which can be heated by the heating element, and a heating block having a wick end protruding from the container along a wick axis. The improved device includes at least one additional wick opening formed within the heating block; at least one additional container for containing an additional volatile substance for evaporation, and the additional wick opening being operatively associated with the additional container. At least one additional wick is carried in the additional container, having a wick end extending through the additional wick opening for evaporation of the additional volatile substance in the additional container.
Abstract: An improved electrode assembly for batteries and the like including a central mandrel configured to exert a resilient outward force on a multilayer web wound around the mandrel. The multilayer web includes a positive electrode layer, a negative electrode layer, and a separator layer separating the positive and negative layers. The resilient outward force acts to maintain the tightness of the web roll, thus lowering electrical resistance and enhancing battery cycle life. The mandrel is preferably formed of sheet metal configured to define an S-shape having a central section and first and second resilient leaves extending therefrom. The leaves preferably define substantially planar areas for bearing against an inner turn of the web roll to exert a resilient outward force thereagainst.
