  • Patent number: 6459418
Abstract: A process for creating an electronically addressable display includes multiple printing operations, similar to a multi-color process in conventional screen printing. In some of the process steps, electrically non-active inks are printed onto areas of the receiving substrate, and in other steps, electrically active inks are printed onto different areas of the substrate. The printed display can be used in a variety of applications. This display can be used as an indicator by changing state of the display after a certain time has elapsed, or when a certain pressure, thermal, radiative, moisture, acoustic, inclination, pH, or other threshold is passed. In one embodiment, the display is incorporated into a battery indicator. A sticker display is described. The sticker is adhesive backed and may then be applied to a surface to create a functional information display unit. This invention also features a display that is both powered and controlled using radio frequencies.

  • Patent number: 6455628
Abstract: A process for preparing an aqueous dispersion by wet milling an aqueous carrier medium, a particulate solid, and a polymeric dispersant; wherein the polymeric dispersant is a combination of at least 50% by weight of a block copolymer; and a random copolymer; and wherein the block and random copolymers are prepared from substantially the same monomers. This invention provides an easy dispersion process for particulate solids, in particular colorants such as pigments or disperse dyes, at higher loadings, and a reduction of dispersion time which improves the productivity. Resulting dispersions have particular utility as inks for ink-jet printers.

  • Patent number: 6453935
Abstract: A fluid injector made of pressure rated components that attach to a fluid flow line so that flow is transferred from the flow line, into the injection unit and back to the fluid flow line. The inlet flow is used to pressurize the storage tank and provide a solution to mix with injection solutions in the tank to provide an accurate preset or adjustable injection rate into the fluid flow line. Vent/proportioner ports provide back flow protection, prevent fluid from siphoning from the storage tank, provide an internal air release port and set injection ratios. A mixing control valve adjusts the injection ratios by mixing outgoing injection solutions with incoming fluid from the fluid flow line. Flexible bladders isolate one or more injection solutions within one storage container which are injected simultaneously at independent injection rates.

  • Patent number: 6455769
Abstract: Electrical cable, in particular for medium- or high-voltage power transmission or distribution, having a metal shield and a semiconductive water-blocking expanded layer. This layer exerts three main functions, the first one is to elastically and uniformly absorb radial forces of expansion and contraction of the cable coating layers due to thermal cycles of the cable during use, thus preventing deformations or breakages in the metal shield, the second one is to ensure electrical continuity between the cable core and the metal shield, the third one is to effectively avoid penetration and propagation of moisture and/or water along the cable core due, e.g., to possible ruptures in the metal shield. The third function is obtained by including in the expanded layer a water-swellable material.

  • Patent number: 6453610
Abstract: A method of modifying the growth of plant roots is provided in which the roots are grown in proximity to a membrane from which water is released during the growth of the roots, wherein the membrane is a hydrophobic porous membrane or a hydrophilic non-porous membrane. The method may also be used to collect materials exuded from plant roots by growing the plant roots in a growing medium that is surrounded by a membrane so that moisture is released into the growing medium from the membrane while materials exuded from the plant roots are retained within the growing medium by the membrane, wherein the membrane is a hydrophobic porous membrane or a hydrophilic non-porous membrane.
