  • Patent number: 6395975
Abstract: Mass-impregnated electrical cable, particularly for carrying high voltage direct current, having an insulation in which, around the insulating layer impregnated with an insulating fluid, a containing layer is provided broadly includes at least one winding of a tape of a semiconducting elastomeric material, which exerts an effective action of containing the insulating fluid, while preventing formation of micro-cavities within the impregnated insulating layer. The material constituting the tape has high physical-chemical resistance to the degrading action of the components of the insulating fluid, both in the cold state and, in particular, at the operating temperature of the cable.

  • Patent number: 6392657
Abstract: A method for determining the optimal viewing angle of display, input, or output devices with limited viewing, output and/or sensing angle characteristics including a test pattern displayed on a display screen. Test pattern is displayed on display screen and includes one or more test elements having levels of gray different from the gray shown in background. Once initiated, viewer evaluates test pattern to determine if display screen is positioned at an optical viewing angle to the viewer. In particular, one set of test elements has a luminance just below background and the other set of test elements has a luminance just above background. To determine the optimal viewing angle, a viewer evaluates test pattern determine the difference in gray levels between test elements against background. The viewer then adjusts the position of display screen until test elements either blend in with background or provide the largest contrast with background.

  • Patent number: 6391107
Abstract: Within the known Müller-Kühne process and a corresponding installation, a utilization of a great variety of residual materials can be achieved with optimum process control, both in regard to the production of a raw powder and the fuel, whereby this is made possible in particular in that the raw powder components and the fuel components also are, with respect to the residual materials being used, stored separately, conditioned, and then mixed according to the formulation under strict monitoring. The flue gas is used for preheating the raw powder by adding the cold raw powder to it. This simultaneously removes sticky components from the flue gas. The raw powder preheated in this manner, and also the raw powder or dust recovered in subsequent dedusters are returned to the rotary drum kiln, whereby the solid and other fuels are used and burned with a mutually supportive flame at the opposite end of the rotary drum kiln.

Abstract: A system for keeping the imperfectly machined surfaces of bearings apart at rest. The system includes a first bearing surface which moves facing a second bearing surface, the first surface having a distribution of discrete diamond-like carbon (DLC) pads deposited upon an adhesion layer. The DLC pads are at a height which is approximately the height of the roughness or imperfections of the surfaces. The pads are distributed over the surface at approximately three pads to forty pads or more per square inch. The pads keep the bearing surfaces from coming in contact. Also disclosed is a hydrodynamic bearing having a thrust plate having hydrodynamic grooves and DLC pads on a thrust surface, and a rotor member having an end facing the thrust plate, and a ball and socket bearing having DLC pads deposited on either the socket surface or ball surface.
