Patent number: 6956725Abstract: The arc suppression system for electrical contacts includes a transistor, such as an IGBT, which is connected across the contacts. A control circuit controls the operation of the transistor such that the turning on of the transistor results in a current path around the contacts, thereby tending to prevent arcing across the contacts. A current sensor, such as a flyback transformer, is positioned in series with the contacts, wherein when the contacts open, current is interrupted through the contacts and the transformer, a secondary voltage results which is applied to the transistor, which tends to maintain the transistor on for a time which is sufficient to allow the contacts to either open or close without an arc.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 2002Date of Patent: October 18, 2005Assignee: Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Donald H. Patent number: 6956255Abstract: A high-speed bipolar transistor is provided which is improved in the effect of heat radiation without increasing the substrate capacitance. The heat radiation connection between a base region and a silicon substrate includes a p+ extrinsic base polysilicon electrode and a polysilicon layer buried in an isolation groove with a very thin silicon dioxide side wall. Accordingly, the heat generated at the base is radiated through this path to the silicon substrate. Further, the film thickness of the silicon dioxide on the inner wall of the isolation groove is sufficiently increased compared with previous structures to prevent an increase in the substrate capacitance. Consequently, there can be obtained a bipolar transistor which operates at high speed, and is improved in the effect of heat radiation without increasing the substrate capacitance.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 2002Date of Patent: October 18, 2005Assignees: Renesas Technology Corp., Hitachi Device Engineering Co., Ltd.Inventors: Eiji Oue, Katsuyoshi Washio, Masao Kondo, Hiromi Shimamoto

Patent number: 6954988Abstract: A method of manufacturing a catalytic converter is described where the catalytic converter is comprised of an outer tube member having a monolith substrate internally compressed therein with a wrapped mat material surrounding the monolith substrate and intermediate the outer tube. One or more monolith members can be applied within the outer tube and heat shields may also be applied internal to the outer tube and adjacent to the monolith substrate. The assembly of the catalytic converter includes measuring the sequence of compression of the mat material to the monolith substrate in order to understand the possible force characteristics which can be applied during the assembly thereof. The mat material is therefore compressed within the outer tube by way of compression jaws, by compression rollers, and/or by spinning. The compression of the mat material can be in single or multiple steps.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 2002Date of Patent: October 18, 2005Assignee: Hess Engineering, Inc.Inventor: David Mayfield
