Patent number: 6774785Abstract: The system tests front panel lights, such as LEDs, on an electronic instrument, the front panel lights being normally used to indicate the status of selected output conditions of the instrument. The system also uses the LEDs to communicate additional information concerning the instrument, in particular the operation of the clock system for the instrument. The system includes a plurality of timers, each timer being associated with one front panel LED. The user sets the timers a specific amount of time (e.g. one second) apart, with each LED being programmed with a different timer. The LEDs light in succession in response to the clock reaching a preselected time. If one or more of the LEDs do not light, failure of the LEDs is indicated. If the LEDs do not light in proper order or at the expected time, investigation of the clock system is indicated.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 2002Date of Patent: August 10, 2004Assignee: Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc.Inventor: Edmund O. Patent number: 6774601Abstract: A system and method for predicting mechanical failures in machinery driven by induction motors by using the motor as a diagnostic tool to detect present mechanical disturbances. The motor is monitored during operation to avoid down-time. The motor's torque fluctuations are used as an indicator of early-stage mechanical failures in the machinery. The motor's torque fluctuations are determined using indirect sensing techniques that are less expensive and less intrusive than previously known. More specifically, torque is derived from easily and inexpensively measurable parameters, such as motor slip and phase angle. Current operation is compared to known normal operation. Variations of the motor's characteristics from the known baseline indicate an actual or approaching mechanical failure. “Experimental Fractals” are disclosed that visually represent a current state of the monitored machinery and allow for visual comparison to a baseline for detection of mechanical failures.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 2002Date of Patent: August 10, 2004Assignee: Predictive Systems Engineering, Ltd.Inventors: Elia Schwartz, Mila Gorodetski

Publication number: 20040153127Abstract: Many individuals generate excessively loud snoring during their sleep, often to the point where others cannot tolerate sleeping in the same room with them. Most cases of snoring are caused by excessive bulk and flaccidity of soft tissues of the palate and uvula that vibrate as air flows past them. These palate and uvula contain muscles whose contractions can stiffen and displace the soft tissues so that they do not vibrate. The invention provides electrical stimulation that causes the oropharyngeal muscles to contract during sleep using one or more microstimulators injected into or near these muscles or the nerves which innervate them. The invention also provides methods of determining the anatomical structures implicated in snoring and testing such locations for effective placement and stimulation of muscle contraction to decrease the frequency or magnitude of snoring.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 15, 2004Publication date: August 5, 2004Applicant: Alfred E.
