Abstract: An inhalation device comprising a chamber having an inlet and an outlet; and an active substance reservoir, wherein the device further includes vacuum means for forming a vacuum in the chamber and valve means arranged to release the vacuum, so that the substance contained in the reservoir is dispersed in the chamber on release of the vacuum.

Abstract: There is disclosed a process for the production of 3-amino-4,6-diacetyl phenol, or a derivative thereof, which comprises reacting a compound of formula III, ##STR1## or a protected derivative thereof, in which R is acetyl or hydrogen, with an excess of acetyl chloride or acetyl bromide and aluminium chloride or aluminium bromide at a temperature of from 30.degree. to 50.degree. C. in an halogenated hydrocarbon solvent.

Abstract: There are described compounds of formula I ##STR1## in which an adjacent pair of R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 form a chain --COCH.dbd.CE--O--, and the remainder of R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7 and R.sub.8, which may be the same or different, each represent hydrogen, hydroxy, alkyl, halogen, alkenyl, alkoxy, or --NR.sub.1 R.sub.2 in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, which are the same or different, are each hydrogen or alkyl,Rg is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl or phenyl-alkyl, andE is --COOH, a 5-tetrazolyl group or an (N-tetrazol-5-yl) carboxamido group,and pharmaceutically acceptable derivatives thereof.There are also described processes for making the compounds and pharmaceutical, e.g. anti-allergic, compositions containing the compounds.

Abstract: An inhalation device for a powdered medicament contained initially in a container, which device comprises a swirl chamber adapted to receive a medicament container and having air inlets thereinto and a mouthpiece in communication therewith; a container receiving cavity also in communication with said swirl chamber; and piercing means operable to pierce a medicament container when in the cavity and to withdraw from the pierced container, said cavity being provided with obstructive means to prevent the container re-entering the cavity after being pierced.

Abstract: There is described a method of treatment of allergy to ingested allergens, which comprises per os administration of a daily dosage of from 20 to 4,000 mg of 1,3-bis(2-carboxychromon-5-yloxy)-2-hydroxypropane or a therapeutically acceptable salt thereof to a patient having such an allergy.

Abstract: The present invention provides an inhalation device for use with a pressurized container having an outlet valve mechanism and from which material may be discharged by depression of a portion of the valve mechanism thereof, which device comprises a chamber for receiving said container; actuating means adapted to bear on the valve mechanism of the container; and first and second biasing means both adapted to bias the container towards the actuating means, said first and second biasing means each being of insufficient force alone to depress the portion of the valve mechanism of the container but together being of sufficient force to do so, said second biasing means being restrained in a position in which it does not bear on the container and releasable on inhalation through the device to a position in which it does bear on the container.

Abstract: There is described a process for the production of a 1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-quinoline-2-carboxylic acid, or a salt, ester or amide thereof, which comprises cyclization of a corresponding 2-aminobenzoyl pyruvic acid or an ester thereof, and if desired or necessary converting the resulting product to an appropriate salt, ester or amide thereof, or vice versa.

Abstract: There are described salts of 1,3-bis(2-carboxychromon-5-yloxy)propan-2-ol with certain long acting or .beta.2 selective bronchodilators.There are also described certain pharmaceutical mixtures comprising(a) one or more of 1,3-bis(2-carboxychromon-5-yloxy)-propan-2-ol, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, in combination with(b) one or more .beta.2 selective or long acting bronchodilators, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

Abstract: There is described a method of treatment of asthma which comprises administration to an asthmatic patient of an effective amount of an inhalation composition consisting essentially of a dispersion or suspension of from 0.2 to 2.0% disodium cromoglycate of mass median diameter 0.01 to 10 microns, from 0.15 to 2.0% by weight of a sorbitan or sorbitol ester surfactant and a propellant mixture comprising dichlorodifluoromethane and 1,2-dichloro-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane, the ratio of dichlorodifluoromethane to 1,2-dichloro-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane, in said mixture being in the range from 2:1 to 1:1 by weight, the disodium cromoglycate used in the formulation containing from 0.05 to 1% w/w of water and the total formulation containing less than 0.1% w/w of water and having a vapor pressure in the range 35 to 70 pounds per square inch gauge.There is also described disodium cromoglycate having a mass median diameter of less than 20 microns, more preferably in the range 0.

Abstract: There is described a process for the production of a 4,6-diacetyl resorcinol having an alkyl C 1 to 6 or an alkenyl C 2 to 6 group in the 2-position, which comprises reacting 4,6-diacetyl resorcinol with an alkyl C 1 to 6- or an alkenyl C 2 to 6- halide.The product 4,6-diacetyl resorcinols are useful as intermediates in the production of pharmaceuticals. Certain of the product 4,6-diacetyl resorcinols are novel.

Abstract: There is described a process for the production of a polysaccharide-producing enzyme, which comprises fermenting an appropriate enzyme producing organism in aqueous sucrose, characterized in that the sucrose concentration is maintained at between 1 and 10 g/l throughout all but the last part of the fermentation and that the dissolved oxygen content of the fermentation is controlled.There is also described a method for the purification of a polysaccharide producing enzyme, which comprises absorbing a mixture containing the enzyme on an anionic resin and removing the enzyme from the resin with a sugar containing eluant, and a novel highly purified form of polysaccharide producing enzyme.

Abstract: An insecticidal composition particularly valuable for use indoors, e.g. against cockroaches, comprises:(A) 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-benzodioxol-4-yl H-methylcarbamate; and(b) pyrethrin.

Abstract: There is described disodium cromoglycate in a form having a bulk density of greater than 0.45 g per ml when measured according to British Standard Test No 1460 (1967).There are also described granular and unit dosage forms of disodium cromoglycate. The disodium cromoglycate is useful, e.g. in the treatment of certain conditions of the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract: The cap of a centrifuge sample tube has a larger than usual bore therethrough to facilitate sample loading and unloading. Sealing of the larger bored is better than seals which can be achieved with the very narrow bores hitherto considered essential to minimize potential sources of leakage of sample from the tube.

Abstract: There is described the mono salt of 6-methylamino-4-oxo-10-propyl-4H-pyrano[3,2-g]-quinoline-2,8-dicarboxylic acid with a strongly basic cation.There is also described an aqueous solution of 6-methylamino-4-oxo-10-propyl-4H-pyrano[3,2-g]quinoline-2,8-dicarboxylic acid the solution being at a pH of from 4 to 8.The salts and solutions are useful as pharmaceuticals, e.g. in the treatment of allergies.
