Abstract: The present invention provides compositions and methods useful for diagnosing, treating, and preventing cancer, particularly ovarian cancer and uterine cancer, based on the discovery that the oocyte specific protein, SAS1R (Sperm Acrosomal SLLP1 Receptor), which is a sperm protein receptor, is also expressed in various cancers, including ovarian cancer and uterine cancer. Six SAS1R variants have been previously identified, and they are encompassed by the invention. The present invention further provides antibodies useful for targeting SAS1R expressing cells and for killing such cells.

Abstract: In some illustrative embodiments, an ultrasonic transducer drive includes a signal generator for producing an outgoing signal and a transducer for converting the outgoing signal to outgoing ultrasound. The transducer may also convert at least a portion of ultrasound reflected by an object to an incoming signal. The transducer may have a transmit side connected conductably to the signal generator during at least a first predetermined period of time and a receive side connected conductably to a signal receiver during at least a second predetermined period of time. A shunt may be connectable between the receive side and a reference potential. The signal generator may generate the outgoing signal during at least substantially the first predetermined period of time while the shunt connects the receive side to the reference potential. The signal receiver may receive the incoming signal during substantially the second predetermined period of time while the shunt is substantially open.

Abstract: Methods are described that bias cells, such as potent and multipotent stem cells, by transfection with a nucleic acid sequence, to differentiate to a desired end-stage cell or a cell having characteristics of a desired end-stage cell. In particular embodiments, human neural stem cells or mesenchymal stem cells are transfected with vectors comprising genes in the homeobox family of transcription factor developmental control genes, and this results in a greater percentage of resultant transformed cells, or their progeny, differentiating into a desired end-stage cell or a cell having characteristics of a desired end-stage cell.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a high-efficiency acoustic wave generator using a pulsed thermal radiation beam. The generator is configured such that when a pulse beam formed by a light interrupter is directly radiated onto a porous material having a woven net or steel scrubber shape, thin wires of the porous material repeatedly rapidly thermally-expand and contract, whereby air in the space between the wires is momentarily heated and cooled, and the expansion and contraction of air is directly transmitted to an air column formed just adjacent to the porous material. By virtue of the above structure, the efficiency of the generator is markedly improved compared to the conventional technique, and the productivity is also greatly enhanced.

Abstract: A primary earth penetrating mandrel formed of a hollow shell steel plate has an upper end and an open lower end joined by an upwardly and outwardly tapered wall. The mandrel is driven downwardly in the earth to simultaneously form a vertical cavity while compacting the sidewall of the cavity to provide structural integrity. The mandrel is then moved upwardly from the bottom of the cavity and aggregate is deposited in the bottom of the cavity following which the mandrel is lowered so that its lower end engages the deposited aggregate and densifies the aggregate by vertical vibratory action and static force with these steps being repeated until the pier top is near the surface of the earth. A second embodiment includes a conduit in the primary mandrel for injecting concrete or grout into aggregate previously deposited in the cavity.

Abstract: Methods for the fabrication of orientation-patterned semiconductor structures are provided. The structures are light-waveguiding structures for nonlinear frequency conversion. The structures are periodically poled semiconductor heterostructures comprising a series of material domains disposed in a periodically alternating arrangement along the optical propagation axis of the waveguide. The methods of fabricating the orientation-patterned structures utilize a series of surface planarization steps at intermediate stages of the heterostucture growth process to provide interlayer interfaces having extremely low roughnesses.

Abstract: Systems, apparatuses and methods for integrating adaptive noise cancellation (ANC) with communication features in an enclosure, such as an incubator, bed, and the like. Utilizing one or more error and reference microphones, a controller for a noise cancellation portion reduces noise within a quiet area of the enclosure. Voice communications are provided to allow external voice signals to be transmitted to the enclosure with minimized interference with noise processing. Vocal communications from within the enclosure may be processed to determine certain characteristics/features of the vocal communications. Using these characteristics, certain emotive and/or physiological states may be identified.
Abstract: A method for controlling flow localization in machining process is disclosed. By application of a constraint of sufficient level in the deformation zone and modifying the surface boundary conditions, suppression of unsteady flow and flow instabilities is achieved. The method enhances machined component quality by ensuring a uniform deformation state on the machined surface. Machined components are produced by ensuing uniform deformation by adopting constrained-cutting process for suppressing the instabilities and unsteady flow through a pre-determined location of the constraint of the constrained machining process relative to the machining tool.
