Abstract: A laser diagnostic device may include a beamsplitter to split one or more input pulses into one or more fundamental pulses and one or more perturbing pulses, one or more beam-combining optics to combine the fundamental and perturbing pulses at a detection plane, a detector including a solid-state material at the detection plane, and a controller. The controller may receive a detector signal from the detector is indicative of nonlinear absorption in the solid-state medium of the fundamental pulses that is perturbed by the perturbing pulses. The controller may further extract a temporal electric field waveform of the one or more input pulses from the detector signal and provide as an output at least one of the temporal electric field waveform, a spectrum, or a spectral phase of the one or more input pulses.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to enhancing alkalinity of brine, e.g. seawater, using bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BPMED) without removing divalent cations that otherwise cause scaling. In one embodiment, a BPMED is employed wherein the brine volumetric flow rate through a basification compartment is greater at a given current density than that through a brine compartment which increases the pH of the brine output while keeping it below the precipitation pH. In one embodiment, the spacer located in the basification compartment is thicker than spacers elsewhere in the BPMED so as resist membrane distortion due to the increased hydrostatic pressure in the basification compartment given the greater volumetric flow. The brine output having increased alkalinity can be returned to the ocean to mitigate acidification and enable capture of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Abstract: A fluorescent single molecule emitter simultaneously transmits its identity, location, and cellular context through its emission patterns. A deep neural network (DNN) performs multiplexed single-molecule analysis to enable retrieving such information with high accuracy. The DNN can extract three-dimensional molecule location, orientation, and wavefront distortion with precision approaching the theoretical limit of information content of the image which will allow multiplexed measurements through the emission patterns of a single molecule.

Abstract: The inventive method for applying a protective graphene coating onto a surface, especially onto a two- or three dimensional artwork or colored surface, comprises the following steps: a) depositing, preferably by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), graphene onto a at least one side of a supporting substrate to produce a graphene/substrate composite including a continuous graphene membrane formed on at least one side of said substrate; b) removing the substrate, or lifting off the graphene from the substrate and c) depositing the graphene membrane onto the surface. A protective graphene coating prepared and deposited by this method provides protection for a surface, especially a two- or three-dimensional artwork or a colored surface, against color degradation, especially fading, yellowing and discoloration due to exposure to UV radiation, dirt, dust, moisture, chemical and/or oxidizing agents.

Abstract: A method and device for controlling coding tools are provided. The video decoding method includes decoding, from a high level of a bitstream, an enable flag indicating whether one or more coding tools are enabled. The coding tools includes a first coding tool that encodes sample values using luma component mapping based on a piecewise linear model. The method includes acquiring a value of an application flag depending on a value of the enable flag, by setting the application flag indicating whether to apply the coding tools to a predetermined value, or by decoding the application flag from a low level of the bitstream, the application flag including a first application flag indicating whether to apply the first coding tool. The coding tools are operated when the value of the application flag is a value indicating that the coding tools are applied.
