Abstract: The resolution of an image produced by a CT imaging system is increased by employing an image reconstruction method that takes advantage of the redundant attenuation measurements made during a typical scan. An initial image is reconstructed with a filtered backprojection technique using the projection views acquired during the scan. Further images of higher resolution are produced by an iterative process in which the reconstructed image is reprojected, combined with originally acquired projection data, and backprojected again at the higher resolution.

Abstract: Movement of a gel structure is propagated by successively applying external stimuli to cause volume phase transition in the gel structure by alternately causing the gel structure to collapse and swell to move the center of mass of the gel structure in the direction of successive stimuli application. The movement is mediated by confining structure for the gel and anchoring the starting side of the gel in the swelling cycle.

Abstract: Analytical methods using hydrogen/deuterium exchange are provided which reduce or eliminate the back-exchange of deuterium for hydrogen. The methods, which are useful in protein and peptide mapping, include the steps of (a) providing a peptide or protein comprising a solvent accessible hydrogen; (b) exchanging the solvent accessible hydrogen for a deuterium; (c) separating the peptide or protein with supercritical fluid chromatography; and (d) analyzing by mass spectrometry the mass of the separated peptide or protein. Supercritical fluid chromatography enables the observation of fast exchanging hydrogen atoms missed using conventional liquid chromatography methods.

Abstract: The present invention provides a peptide identification method along with related peptide databases, method of generating the databases, computer usable media, and computer program products. The peptide identification method involves the use of qualitative amino acid composition or partial qualitative amino acid composition information of a query peptide obtained by mass spectrometry to correlate the query peptide to one or more peptides with defined amino acid sequences in a peptide database generated according to the present invention.
Abstract: A field emission display (FED) with an integrated triode structure is provided. The FED can be manufactured without using a complex packaging process and have a significantly reduced well diameter and a significantly reduced cathode-to-anode distance. In the FED, front and rear panels form a single body using an anode insulating layer as an intermediate. A method for manufacturing the FED using anodic oxidation is also provided.

Abstract: A receiving apparatus and method of a Maximum Likelihood (ML) scheme in a Single-Carrier (SC) system are provided. The apparatus includes at least two antennas, at least two Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) demodulators, at least two subcarrier mappers, at least two OFDM modulators, and a detector. The antennas receive signals. The OFDM demodulators convert the signals into frequency domain signals. The subcarrier mappers confirm signals mapped to frequency domain subcarriers. The OFDM modulators convert the signals into time domain signals. The detector constructs at least one set for candidate transmission symbols and detects receive signals through ML detection using the set.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a process for sintering particles using a sintering aid. The sintering aid can be brought into contact with a plurality of particles to be sintered such that a mixture of the particles and the sintering aid is provided. The mixture of particles and the sintering aid is heated and at least part of the sintering aid is vaporized. Sintering of the particles to form a sintered component followed by cooling of the sintered component can complete the process, or in the alternative, a subsequent heating step or steps can be included whereby additional vaporization of the sintering aid can occur.

Abstract: One aspect of the present invention relates to a covering member for a protruding portion of a patient's body. This cover is flexible and collapsible so that it conforms to the shape of the encased portion of the body. This prevents the cover from being noticed while it is worn under clothing. The cover can contain a medicament or agent for pretreating a portion of the body before an examination or procedure. When the cover is used to apply a topical anesthetic to a portion of the body for a recommended period of time prior to the procedure or examination commencing, the amount of discomfort experienced by the patient can be significantly reduced compared to the amount experienced by the patient who has the anesthetic applied for just a few moments before the procedure begins. Alternatively, the cover can be used to hold a medicament or agent on the intended portion of the body in order to heal a wound or cure a condition such as a skin rash or the like.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a process for joining materials. The process can include providing a first component with a first joint face and a second component with a second joint face. The first component, second component, and bonding layer can be assembled such that the first joint face is oppositely disposed from the second joint face with the bonding layer located at least partially therebetween. Heat can be applied to the first joint face and the second joint face with the bonding layer therebetween. In this manner, wetting and possibly slight dissolving of the first joint face and the second joint face can be afforded, with at least part of the bonding layer being vaporized. In addition, the first joint face can come into intimate contact with the second joint face and form a bond interface, with the first component being bonded to the second component across the bond interface.
