  • Patent number: 11013933
Abstract: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) possesses array of strategies to evade antibiotics through mutational inactivation, hiding inside host immune cells or concealing inside the biofilm in a sessile form. We report a drug-free approach to eradicate MRSA through blue-light bleaching of staphyloxanthin (STX), an anti-oxidative carotenoid residing inside the cell membrane of S. aureus. The photobleaching process, uncovered through a transient absorption imaging study and quantitated by mass spectrometry, decomposes STX and sensitizes MRSA to reactive oxygen species attack. Consequently, photobleaching using low-level blue light exhibits high-level synergy when combined with low-concentration of hydrogen peroxide. Antimicrobial effectiveness of this synergistic therapy is validated in MRSA culture, MRSA-infected macrophage cells, biofilm, and a mouse wound infection model. Collectively, these findings highlight broad applications of STX photobleaching for MRSA-infected diseases.

  • Patent number: 11013406
Abstract: System and Method pertaining to the modification and integration of an existing consumer digital camera, for example, with an optical imaging module to enable point and shoot fundus photography of the eye. The auto-focus macro capability of existing consumer cameras is adapted to photograph the retina over an extended diopter range, eliminating the need for manual diopter focus adjustment. The thru-the-lens (TTL) auto-exposure flash capability of existing consumer cameras is adapted to photograph the retina with automatic flash exposure eliminating the need for manual flash adjustment. The consumer camera imaging sensor and flash are modified to allow the camera sensor to perform both non-mydriatic focusing of the retina using infrared illumination and standard color flash photography of the retina without the need for additional imaging sensors or mechanical filters.

  • Patent number: 11016452
Abstract: A controller hardware in the loop (CHIL) interface is disclosed. The CHIL interface comprises software and hardware that redirects a signal flow, including modulation signals and measurements exchanged between controller logic and a power electronics converter (PEC), to a CHIL port. Accordingly, the CHIL port provides access to the controller logic, at a digital level, throughout phases of the controller's lifetime (i.e., design, installation, maintenance, upgrade). Thus, the CHIL interface facilitates the use of PEC simulators for testing. The CHIL interface can detach the actual PEC from the control logic so testing can be performed with or without an operating PEC and can avoid the need for dedicated and error prone signal conditioning circuitry that is external to the controller.

  • Patent number: 11018552
Abstract: A first radial force value and a second radial force value is received by a radial magnetic bearing controller. Coefficients are computed for a first equation using the first and second radial force values. The first equation is solved to define first solution values. A second solution value paired with each first solution value is computed using the first radial force value and a respective first solution value to define second solution values. Control current sets are computed for each unique paired solution of the second solution values and the first solution values. Each control current set includes a control current value for each of three control currents. A control current value for each of the three control currents is selected from the control current sets. The control current value for each of the three control currents is output to a respective radial winding of a three-pole radial magnetic bearing.
