  • Patent number: 4830303
Abstract: In a gusset-shaped space 6 between a film roll 8 and a contact roller 3, two air displacement rollers 5a,5b, are arranged parallel to the axes of the film roll and the contact roller. These rollers have in contrast to the contact roller and the winding core 2, and the film roll, respectively, small diameters of 7.5 to 50 mm. These rollers displace the air layers 4 adjacent to the film web 1 which are moving into the gusset. The selected distance for the displacement of the air layers between the point of contact of the film roll and the contact roller is so small, that new air layers on the film webs within the gusset can only be formed in the smallest amounts.

  • Patent number: 4828622
Abstract: According to the invention, addition of one or more surfactants having a cloud point in aqueous solution to an aqueous suspension of a solid gives after the isolation of the solid at a temperature above the cloud point aqueous press cakes containing a large amount of this solid. The direct processing of press cakes as obtained for example after the synthesis and isolation of dyes or pigments to give practical aqueous pastes or dispersions requires a minimum solids content in the press cakes. The minimum content is frequently not obtained when conventional methods of isolation are used, so that it is necessary to proceed via the indirect route of drying to obtain the powders and redispersing the powders. By using the process according to the invention it is possible to cut out the costly indirect route or, if desired, to reduce the expense of drying to obtain powders by an appreciable margin.

  • Patent number: 4826502
Abstract: A process for sulfonating preformed hydroxyethylated polybenzimidazole fibers is disclosed. The process comprises the steps of forming an hydroxyethylated polybenzimidazole spinning solution; spinning hydroxyethylated polybenzimidazole fibers, sulfonating the fibers by contacting them with a sulfonating agent, and heating the fiber in an inert atmosphere at a temperature and for a period of time sufficient to convert the ionic bonds, formed in the sulfonating step to covalent bonds, thereby, providing a covalently bonded, sulfonated, hydroxyethylated polybenzimidazole fiber. The fibers produced by the process of the present invention exhibit cation selectivity for electrodialysis and electrochemical applications.
