Abstract: An apparatus and method for winding thin films. Boundary air is discharged and the layers are compressed by a flexible, bowed idler roller located between a winding roll and a backup drive roll. High quality rolls free from wrinkles are produced.
Abstract: A tube adapter for a centrifuge rotor is characterized by generally circumferentially extending latching surfaces which are engageable by the claws of a removal tool to extract the adapter from the recess of a rotor. The latching surfaces may be defined by a continuous groove or by a pair of groove segments formed on the body of the adapter.
Abstract: An apparatus and method of use is provided for the fusion of different cell types into hybrid cells through the use of electrofusion. The apparatus consists of thin-film electrodes etched onto an optically clear lower plate, a channel defined at its boundaries by a photocopolymer material laminated between the lower plate and an upper optically clear top plate providing closure of the channel as well as entry for the cells through the use of integral Luer ports. The apparatus may be produced, with minor adjustment, by using phototools.
Abstract: An improved method for making hydrogen peroxide from the direct combination of hydrogen and oxygen using a platinum/palladium catalyst in which the weight ratio of platinum to platinum plus palladium is in the range of about 0.02 to about 0.2.
Abstract: A pin mounted support system for printed circuit cards and connectors includes a base portion having one or more bores for mounting upon the pins of the header and a guide surface portion that delimits the installed position of the printed circuit card or connector. Where the support is intended for use with a printed circuit board, the support includes a groove or track for accepting and supporting a lateral edge of the printed circuit board. Where the support is intended for use with a connector terminated cable, a keytab is provided with one or more bores for mating with the pins of the header to delimit the proper position of the connector. The connector is positioned between the keytabs and installed in its mated position. The supports are typically fabricated from a molded plastic and are easily removable from their support pins to allow convenient reconfiguring of the header.
Abstract: New composite materials useful for wrapping food items to be cooked by microwave energy comprise a dielectric substrate substantially transparent to microwave energy which substrate is coated and/or imbibed with one or more microwave susceptor materials, the type and amount of said susceptor material or materials being adequate to allow said materials to absorb a portion of both the electric and the magnetic field components of said microwave energy and convert said energy to heat to rapidly brown or crispen the surface of the food item adjacent thereto without substantially impeding the ability of the microwave energy to penetrate the susceptor material and cook the food item.
Abstract: An electrical connector terminal for a flexible printed circuit board which has an elongated plate-like bottom section, a plurality of projections rising from both edges of the bottom section and a contact piece coupled at one end thereof to the bottom section so as to extend over the bottom section with the printed circuit board therebetween, the contact piece being fixed to the printed circuit board in a manner such that the projections are bent to press and hold the contact piece against the surface of the circuit board.
Abstract: Modifying a polyester with tetraethyl silicate (or like oxysilicon chain-brancher) to provide a draw-texturing feed yarn that can be draw-textured at a speed of 1,000 mpm without excessive filament breaks, and with other advantages in the resulting textured yarns, such as improved bulk and dyeability over unmodified polyester yarns textured under similar conditions, and preferably without sacrificing dye uniformity.
Abstract: A system for detecting the radiant energy emitted from different closely spaced species includes two detectors each having a large entrance angle for receiving the radiant energy, and wavelength selective filters between the detector and species, the transmission vs. wavelength characteristics being complementary, and means for ratioing functions of the detector outputs, the ratio being indicative of the identity of the species.

Abstract: Articles from filaments of thermotropic liquid crystal polymers are formed by pultrusion without use of extraneous binder, wherein the filaments formed in a bundle are essentially parallel to permit the greatest surface contact between adjacent filaments.
Abstract: In a device for exhanging objects, in particular writing instruments, between two holders (4, 5) open on one side, in which the object (6) is retained at least in one holder (4) by the cooperation of two retaining elements, one of which is a permanent magnet and the other is a ferromagnetic element. The retaining element provided in the one holder (4) is connected to a raceway mechanism and in the retaining position is disposed at least near the receiving zone of the holder (4), and in the separating position is located farther away from the receiving zone of the holder (4).
Abstract: A process for depositing metal in the form of an interlayer within a solid matrix. The process is characterized in the use of electroactive transfer agents to carry electrons from the cathode to the desired locus within the matrix where the metal cation (M.sup.n+) is reduced to its zero-valent state. Also disclosed are composites of metallic-interlayer-containing matrices.
Abstract: N-(heterocyclicaminocarbonyl)arylsulfonamides in which the aryl radical is substituted in the 2-position by a carboxy radical, ester, thioester, or amide thereof; e.g. N-[(4,6-dimethylpyrimidin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-2-methoxycarbonylbenzenesulf onamide or N-[(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-2-methoxycarbonylbenze nesulfonamide; are useful for the regulation of plant growth and as pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides.
Abstract: A method is provided for loading upwardly extending boreholes in rock with flowable bulk explosives. An explosives loading pipe, an air exhaust pipe and an initiating booster charge with associated initiator are located in the borehole so that the booster and the pipe ends are located deep within the borehole. The ends of the pipes and the initiator are pressed through one or more channels in a cylindrical plug wedged in the borehole opening. Stemming material is first placed in the borehole through the loading pipe to lie against the plug and thereafter the bulk explosive is introduced to fill the borehole. Entrapped air is exhausted through the exhaust pipe.

Abstract: A manually operable creep control mechanism for a tractor of the like having multiple direct drive gears and a creep clutch. The mechanism comprises an elongated arm pivotally mounted on the control box cover plate adjacent the slot through which the gear shift lever travels to shift into the direct drive gear positions. In a first position, the arm is clear of the slot and the gear shift lever is free to move through the entire range of gear positions, while preventing inadvertent pivoting of the arm out of the first position once the lever is in a predetermined low gear, such a fourth. When pivoted to a second position, the arm lies across the slot and limits shifting of the lever to a predetermined higher gear, such as twelfth, while preventing inadvertent movement of the arm out of the second position once the lever is at or beyond the fourth gear position. A flexible switching cable is connected to the arm and an electrical switch for actuating the creep clutch.
Abstract: A visual tilt indicator for an implement, particularly but not exclusively for indicating the tilt angle of a dozer blade on a tractive vehicle, wherein the implement is pivotally supported on the vehicle by an implement universal joint and the support includes hydraulic cylinders operably interconnected between the vehicle and the implement to angle and tilt the implement. The visual tilt indicator of this invention includes an indicator shaft which is operably connected to the vehicle by a universal joint in the vertical axis of the implement support universal joint and the shaft extends horizontally adjacent the implement to indicate the tilt angle of the implement relative to the vehicle. The implement preferably includes a plurality of shaft support indicator means, such as brackets, which receive and slidably support the indicator shaft on the implement to indicate the relative movement of the shaft and the implement.
