Emissions (either flue gas from exhaust or CO2 carried on the ship under pressure in gas cylinders or CO2 obtained during the ships travel via capture) are mixed in a reactor with sea water (e.g., via gas exchange through head-space equilibration or bubbling through a diffuser) until a pH of 5.5 to 6.5 is obtained. Systems and reactors pump seawater through a reactor vessel containing a reaction medium (e.g., carbonates and silicates). The reactor produces an effluent that can be expelled into the ocean.
