Abstract: Provided are a magnesium-based alloy and a manufacturing method thereof. In the method, a magnesium alloy is melted into liquid phase, and an alkaline earth metal oxide is added into a molten magnesium alloy. The alkaline earth metal oxide is exhausted through surface reduction reaction between the melt and the alkaline earth metal oxide. Alkaline earth metal produced by the exhaustion reacts with Mg and/or other alloying elements in the magnesium alloy so that an intermetallic compound is formed. The magnesium prepared by the method is excellent in fluidity and hot-tearing resistance. To this end, the alkaline earth metal oxide added is CaO, and the added amount of CaO is 1.4 to 1.7 times the target weight of Ca to be contained in the final Mg alloy.

Abstract: An adaptive digital baseband receiver is described in which operating parameters of the receiver, such as bit-widths and operating frequencies, are determined that achieve a target bit-error-ratio (BER) as a function of received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and interference levels in a wireless channel and enable the receiver to consume a minimum amount of power. Over consumption of power may be avoided due to a functional relationship between optimal resolution and input signal conditions. In exemplary embodiments, the adaptive digital receiver is provided that adjusts bit-widths and operating frequency at power efficient levels while meeting a target BER. Simulations can be used to determine a relation between bit-width, operating frequency, and input signal conditions, for example.

Abstract: Scheduling methods and apparatus are provided for buffered crossbar switches with a crosspoint buffer size as small as one and no speedup. An exemplary distributed scheduling process achieves 100% throughput for any admissible Bernoulli arrival traffic. Simulation results also showed that this distributed scheduling process can provide very good delay performance for different traffic patterns. The simulation results also showed that packet delay is very weakly dependent on the switch size, which implies that the exemplary distributed scheduling process can scale with the number of switch ports.

Abstract: An imaging system is provided, including a detection unit and a scan unit. The detection unit senses radiation of a target area. The scan unit directs the radiation to the detection unit, in which the scanning unit scans the target area N times at a constant speed within a scan period, such that each of the pixels of the target area is scanned N times by the scan unit, thereby the detection unit generates N sub-detection values for each of the pixels and adds the N sub-detection values up to generate a detection value for each of the pixels.

Abstract: A flexible unit-cell actuator includes a shape memory alloy sheet having a fold between adjacent legs in one state and a heat source that upon activation concentrates heating of the shape memory alloy sheet at the fold relative to the legs to change the fold between one state and another state. The heat source may include resistive heating due to an electric current passing through the shape memory alloy sheet. The fold typically includes a reduced cross-sectional area and may include slits to increase electrical resistance at the fold relative to the adjacent legs. An actuator array includes a plurality of flexible unit-cell actuators formed in a sheet, each unit-cell actuator mechanically coupled to at least one other unit-cell actuator at a coupling region. Plural unit-cell actuators may be mechanically coupled in series, in parallel, or both, may be electrically connected in series, and may move along a defined curve or surface.
Abstract: An artificial foot and ankle joint consists of a curved leaf spring foot member having a heel extremity and a toe extremity, and a flexible elastic ankle member that connects the foot member for rotation at the ankle joint. An actuator motor applies torque to the ankle joint to orient the foot when it is not in contact with the support surface and to store energy in a catapult spring that is released along with the energy stored in the leaf spring to propel the wearer forward. A ribbon clutch prevents the foot member from rotating in one direction beyond a predetermined limit position. A controllable damper is employed to lock the ankle joint or to absorb mechanical energy as needed. The controller and sensing mechanisms control both the actuator motor and the controllable damper at different times during the walking cycle for level walking, stair ascent, and stair descent.
