The sensed characteristic can be electrical contact with the strands, distance from the surface of the sheath to the strands, or change of color of the sheath surface.
Abstract: A device for producing information related to a position of an elevator car in an elevator shaft includes a toothed belt having a plurality of teeth spaced along a length of the belt and mounted in an elevator shaft, an encoder mounted on the elevator car and having a toothed wheel for engaging the teeth, and guide rollers mounted on the elevator car and engaging the toothed belt to urge the plurality of teeth into engagement with the toothed wheel.
Abstract: An escalator combtooth assembly for an escalator is responsive to combplate obstruction and generates an alarm signal when an obstruction is encountered. One or more combteeth plates are pivotally mounted to the front or leading edge at a combplate assembly. In response to an encountered obstruction one or more of the plates rotate upwardly. Electrical switch contacts associated with the combteeth plates change state when the plate rotates, allowing an alarm signal to be generated. The combteeth plates may include rearwardly-extending arms which pass through accepting slots located at the rear of a ledge on a main complete body upon which the combteeth plates rest. A guide device, such as a bolt, limits the degree of available rotation for the plates, which are biased in an initial position, preferably by an elastomeric member.
Abstract: A chain-free conveying device for persons has directly driven step bodies which run forward in one direction one after the other and run back more quickly thereunder. Each step body runs on rollers, of which two may each be driven by a respective electric motor. Each step body includes a device for the supplying of electrical current to the step body. Each step body has at least one sensor for determining spacing from the adjacent step bodies. A control electronic system controls the electric motors in dependence on a signal from the sensors, so that the step bodies run directly one after the other in a person transport region. A respective tipping station for inclining the step bodies is provided at each of the ends of the conveying device. In preferred embodiments the step bodies are directly driven by a friction wheel drive or by means of toothed wheels.
Abstract: A device for preventing uncontrolled acceleration of an elevator car installed in an elevator installation. The device has a limiting cable guided over rollers in a direction of movement of the elevator car. A braking device which is joined to the elevator car is connected to the limiting cable by a release and brakes the elevator car in both a downward and upward direction when the limiting cable transmits a predetermined release force to the release. A speed limiter is connected to one of the rollers and stops the roller when the traveling speed of the elevator car exceeds a predetermined limiting speed either in a downward or upward direction.
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for generating hoistway information from images of the surface patterns of a hoistway component such as a guide rail sensed by a CCD line camera. The image data are input into a first correlator which uses an incremental position of a new image and an absolute position of a preceding image to generate an estimated position. The estimated position is input into a second correlator and is used to locate the relevant database sector in which the image which was stored in the database during calibration is situated. The second correlator compares the new image with the stored image and determines from the position index of the stored image the absolute position of the elevator car which is transmitted to the elevator control.

Abstract: A contact-connecting device connects more than two indicator fibers in an electrically conducting manner to create a conducting connection of the indicator fibers at the end of a safety-monitored synthetic fiber rope made from electrically insulating synthetic fibers and the electrically conducting indicator fibers. A fastener fixes the contact-connecting device and the indicator fibers relative to one another, which creates a low-cost and reliable contact-connection.
Abstract: A method of allocating elevator cars to operating groups in which the cars execute travel tasks for specific zones. For example, each elevator car can be assigned to an operating group (EXP) for long-distance trips, an operating group (LOC) for local trips, or a group (FREE) for free elevator cars. If a travel task passes through a blind zone, the most favorable elevator car is selected from the EXP operating group or the FREE group. If the selected elevator car belongs to the FREE group, the car is allocated to the EXP operating group while taking account of certain parameters. If a travel task does not pass through a blind zone, the most favorable elevator car is selected from the LOC operating group or from the FREE group. If the selected elevator car belongs to the FREE group, the car is allocated to the LOC operating group, while taking account of certain parameters. On expiry of a specified time with no travel task, an elevator car of the EXP and LOC operating groups is allocated to the FREE group.
Abstract: An indicating device for an elevator installation includes an electroluminescent indicator and a sound-reproducing apparatus, wherein the sound-reproducing apparatus is glued to a rear side of the electroluminescent indicator. The electroluminescent indicator and the sound-reproducing apparatus are mounted on a frame that snaps into a housing to form a module that can be attached to a wall mount.
Abstract: An auxiliary device for displacing a payload receptacle, which stands outside a station, into one of the stations. The auxiliary device includes a temporarily activatable brake release device for releasing the braking device and an auxiliary drive device for displacing the payload receptacle when the brake release device is activated. The brake release device and the auxiliary drive device are arranged in the uppermost region of the elevator shaft and are actuable by way of a crank rod linkage. The crank rod linkage includes a lower actuating end, which can be brought from a rest setting into a working setting. The crank rod linkage is coupled with a rod linkage extension, the vertical effective length of which corresponds with at least the vertical spacing of the walk areas of two adjacent stations.
Abstract: A door locking system for retrofit installation on an automatic sliding two-panel door of an elevator car prohibits opening and closing of the door from the interior of the car when between two floors. The door locking system includes a hook retainer mounted on one side of the door opening. A locking pawl is mounted to a panel of the door on the opposite side of the opening for selectably engaging the hook retainer. A cable is coupled to a drive mechanism and to the locking pawl for disengaging the locking pawl from the hook retainer when at a floor stop. A flexible cable housing slidably retains the cable and defines a path length between the drive mechanism and the locking pawl. A path length adjuster mechanism is connected between two sections of the cable housing for manually adjusting the path length. A hold-down is mounted to the door to retain the cable housing in close proximity to the door while permitting movement parallel with the door in response to adjustment of the path length.

Abstract: An emergency drive system for elevators allows manual raising and lowering of the elevator in an emergency condition when an emergency brake has been applied to a rotating member of the elevator drive system. A linkage element is pivotally mounted to the brake, and carries a manual drive member having a drag bearing and a pair of guide rollers. A drive line passes about the drive member, guide rollers and a hand crank. Operation of the hand crank creates a tensional imbalance in the drive line, pivots the linkage member to engage the manual drive member with the rotary member. The increased drag to crank rotation resulting from the engagement causes the linkage element to pivot about the manual drive member, backing the brake away from the rotating member and allowing the rotating member to be turned by the manual drive member. The device is self-regulating, permitting only sufficient release of the brake to cause a slow rotation of the rotating member and the elevator car motion.
Abstract: An elevator installation with hoistway doors has door panels that can be laterally displaced beyond the width of the hoistway, and/or they can be at least partially displaced into the hoistway wall resulting in an elevator installation with improved utilization of building space, which also requires less effort to install. The door frame of the hoistway door assembly is transformed into a flat, wide hoistway wall module with integral hoistway doors such that building space hitherto required in the hoistway by the hoistway wall is reduced. The hoistway wall module is either inserted between the landing floors, or else several such hoistway wall modules are fitted together vertically and form a largely freestanding modular hoistway wall which forms between the elevator installation and the building an interface which is either self-supporting or supported individually on each floor.
