The switch monitors for presence or absence of light at its input ports. In response to new light being present after a period of absence, the switch directs the new light to an internal receiver, which obtains control information from the light. This control information indicates an output port which is to be optically coupled to the input port. The switch then reconfigures itself to perform such an optical coupling. If light becomes absent again at the input port, the process can repeat.
