  • Patent number: 6167427
Abstract: A system an method for efficiently providing access by a large number of clients to objects located at a large number of information servers. A non-bottleneck solution is provided to sharing load among servers by migrating or replicating objects over from highly loaded servers to less highly loaded servers. Objects that experience low loading are deleted to make room for more highly used objects and to permit make space for new objects. A naming service is provided to provide rapid access to a replica of a requested objects, while avoiding directing access requests to servers from which replicas of requested objects have been deleted. Hierarchical ordering of replication and naming functions permits a variety of particular access methods to be realized.

  • Patent number: 6167411
Abstract: An automatically advancing user interface for entering new data and editing pre-existing data in data entry fields on a display screen. Data is entered and/or edited in a universal handwriting capture widget. A plurality of text entry widgets corresponding to the different data entry fields are displayed on the screen. The user defines a sequentially ordered list of text entry widgets. At any given time only one text entry widget is selected as the current text entry widget based on the sequentially ordered list. The data in the current text entry widget is displayed in the handwriting capture widget. After the data has been entered and/or edited in the handwriting capture widget it is displayed in the current text entry widget. The current text entry widget is then automatically advanced by selecting as the current text entry widget the next text entry widget in the sequentially ordered list of text entry widgets.

  • Patent number: 6165310
Abstract: An apparatus and method for demounting parts from the adhesive upper surface of a film has a base with a tool mounted thereon. A portion of the tool has a fluted surface extending above the base upper surface. The film lower surface is positioned above the base with a part on the film overlying and opposite the fluted surface of the tool. A vacuum is supplied through at least one passage in the base to the film lower surface to draw the film around and over the tool flute and force the part to at least partially separate from the film adhesive upper surface. The part that has been separated from the adhesive upper surface of the film is stripped from the film adhesive upper surface such as by applying a vacuum force directly to the part through a collet and moving the collet and base relative to one another.

  • Patent number: 6167162
Abstract: A new method for real time implementation of rate-distortion optimized coding mode selection is disclosed that can be efficiently applied to H-263-compatible video codecs and other codecs of similar type. A normalized rate-distortion model is used to efficiently compute the rate and the distortion when encoding motion-compensated prediction error signals, instead of performing DCT, quantization and entropy-encoding. A fast algorithm is also disclosed that determines sub-optimal values of coding parameters such as the quantization parameter and the Lagrangian multiplier, .lambda., for the trellis search. Very good rate control and picture quality are achieved, especially when the disclosed techniques are applied in very low bitrate video coding.

  • Patent number: 6167359
Abstract: A nonlinear analysis for characterizing phase noise and timing jitter in oscillators is disclosed. The method and apparatus utilize a nonlinear differential equation to characterize the phase error of a given oscillator. A precise stochastic characterization of timing jitter and spectral dispersion is also disclosed based on the nonlinear differential equation. Representative time and frequency domain computational techniques are disclosed for characterizing the phase noise and timing jitter of circuits. In addition, a single scalar constant, c, is utilized to describe jitter and spectral spreading in a noisy oscillator.

  • Patent number: 6167415
Abstract: An integrated circuit, e.g. an Audio Codec (AC) '97 conforming audio codec, includes a digital filter and gain module including multiple channels of gain control and multiple channels of digital filtering. A gain control module includes an overflow check of data samples requiring differing lengths of clamping. Each channel of the digital filter includes a finite impulse response (FIR) filter, and an infinite impulse response (IIR) filter. The digital filtering is implemented largely in hardware independent of the number of channels required and/or independent of the required order of the filtering. Thus, filter channels can be added or additional filtering implemented merely by increasing the clock speed without changing the digital filter design. The FIR filter is capable of being reset each frame to prevent a direct current (DC) buildup at internal nodes. The IIR filter performs a plurality of 2.sup.nd order biquadratic equations in an overall average of as few as four clock cycles per 2.sup.

  • Patent number: 6165023
Abstract: A communication connector arrangement has a contact wire support, and at least a first and a second pair of terminal contact wires with portions fixed on the support. Each pair of contact wires has contact portions for establishing electrical connections with a mating connector. A first leading portion of a first contact wire of the first pair, and a second leading portion of a second contact wire of the second pair, extend generally parallel to one another and are terminated at their ends by a capacitance element. Capacitive crosstalk compensation is thus produced at the contact portions of the terminal contact wires, when the latter are engaged by the mating connector. In a disclosed embodiment, the arrangement includes a jack frame joined with the contact wire support, and the terminal contact wires are positioned inside a connector opening in the jack frame to connect electrically with a plug connector when inserted in the connector opening in the frame.

  • Patent number: 6166571
Abstract: A high frequency divider circuit for producing output signals of half the frequency of an input clock signal includes two identical circuit sections, each producing an output signal and its complement. The circuit sections are connected to each other so that the output signals of one circuit section serve as input signals to the other circuit section. Each circuit section contains a load transistor which is controlled by one of the clock signal and the clock signal complement, and a switch transistor which is controlled by the other of the clock signal and the clock signal complement. The inventive circuit exhibits a reduced RC time constant for each circuit section and an increased output signal swing between the output signals and their respective complements, as contrasted with prior art frequency dividers, thereby increasing the overall circuit response time and its ability to operate at high frequencies.

  • Patent number: 6166742
Abstract: This disclosure describes the use in telecommunications of a data processing technique for accelerating the calculation of data points in volume image rendering using volume ray casting, to create 3-dimensional data sets of network operational characteristics. Following basic data collection from a telecommunications network, for example, the 3-D discrete wavelet transform of the volume ray casting is performed on the data volume. Then, an "index" volume is pre-computed with the same resolution as the original data volume, and is the basis for setting the sampling rate (distance) at each voxel. The spatial-frequency locality of the wavelet coefficients is utilized to detect the maximum local frequency. From the latter, the appropriate sampling distance is chosen. The index volume information is applied to perform adaptive-sampling ray casting computations in the spatial domain. The volume rendering therefore can be approximated in a fast but controlled process.

  • Patent number: 6166600
Abstract: A pilotless feed forward distortion reduction system uses phase and gain control based on the phases and amplitudes of combining signals prior to a distortion isolation point to maintain the relationship between the phase and amplitudes of combining signals. For example, the feed forward arrangement receives a signal to be amplified on a main signal path and replicates the signal onto a main signal path and a feed forward path. The signal on the main signal path is applied to a gain & phase circuit. The output of gain & phase circuit is applied to the amplifier whose output comprises the amplified signal and distortion signals produced by the amplifier. A portion of the output of the amplifier is placed on a coupling path and combined at the distortion isolation point with a delayed version of the signal on the second path to isolate the distortion produced from the amplifier.

  • Patent number: 6163831
Abstract: A multiple agent system providing each of a plurality of agents, i.e., processors, access to a shared synchronous memory. A super agent may be an agent from among a plurality of agents which accesses a shared synchronous memory most frequently. The super agent has direct access to the shared synchronous memory, without negotiation and/or arbitration, while the non-super agents access the shared synchronous memory under the control of an arbiter-and-switch. Open windows are generated when the super agent is not accessing the shared synchronous memory. The non-super agents can be allowed interim access to the shared synchronous memory even before the super agent terminates ownership of the shared synchronous memory.
