  • Patent number: 6159665
Abstract: Photoacid generators advantageous for use in applications such as photoacid generators used in chemically amplified resists are disclosed. These compounds are based on an ortho nitro benzyl configuration employing an .alpha. substituent having high bulk, steric characteristics, and electron withdrawing ability. The enhanced efficacy is particularly found in compounds both having a suitable .alpha. substituent and a second ortho substituent with large electron withdrawing and steric effects.

  • Patent number: 6161196
Abstract: Fault tolerance is provided in a computing system using a technique referred to as indirect instrumentation. In one embodiment, a number of different copies of a given target program are executed on different machines in the system. Each of the machines includes a controller for controlling the execution of the copy of the target program on that machine. The controllers communicate with a user interface of an instrumentation tool on another machine. A user specifies variables to be monitored, breakpoints, voting and recovery parameters and other information using the user interface of the instrumentation tool, and the tool communicates corresponding commands to each of the controllers for use in executing the copies. A fault is detected in one of the copies by comparing values of a user-specified variable generated by the different copies at the designated breakpoints.

  • Patent number: 6160645
Abstract: A holographic medium uses a photosensitive polymer medium. The shelf life of the photosensitive polymer medium is improved by hermetically sealing the polymer between glass plates. The hermetic seal is designed so that high T.sub.g materials, or solder, can be used as the sealant without damage to the polymer already contained between the plates. The hermetic seal comprises metal foils attached to the plates with the edges thereof extending away from the plates in tab-like fashion. The foils are attached prior to filling the assembly with polymer. After filling, the outer edges of the foil tabs are the sealed with local heating away from the site of the polymer, or crimped using mechanical crimping.

  • Patent number: 6159760
Abstract: A method of fabricating oxide-apertured vertical cavity surface emitting lasers involving the steps of: i) defining, during the fabrication of one or more VCSELs on an electronic chip, a number of mesa structures of different sizes; ii) selectively oxidizing the chip and mesa structures to produce an oxide-aperture for each structure; iii) inspecting the chip to determine which one of the mesas is desired or optimal; iv) choosing an appropriate metalization mask that serves to metalize and electrically connect only that desired mesa structure; and v) depositing, a dielectric top mirror on that electrically connected mesa. Advantageously, the method may be practiced using a variety of fabrication techniques and apparatus that are compatible with conventional devices. A distinguishing characteristic of our inventive method, is that only a desired or optimal mesa is completed while the remaining mesas on a particular chip remain unprocessed.

  • Patent number: 6160860
Abstract: An extended frequency lock range is achieved in a phase-locked loop (PLL) circuit based on sampled phase detectors by introducing frequency feedback into the PLL circuit. At least one data sampler samples adjacent bits of incoming data, such as data bits D.sub.X and D.sub.Y, and an edge detector samples an edge, E, of the incoming data signal between the two data bits, D.sub.X and D.sub.Y. Sequence values "101" or "010" for the data bits D.sub.X, E and D.sub.Y, are not valid and indicate that the VCO is sampling the incoming data stream too slowly. When sequence values of "101" or "010" are measured by the sampled phase detectors, the frequency of the VCO output, V.sub.O, is known to be too low, and a constant current is preferably injected by the sampled phase detector into the PLL, until the frequency becomes too high, upon which a constant current of opposite polarity is applied.

  • Patent number: 6160510
Abstract: An antenna array system combines the antenna signals from separate antennas using at least one delay in the RF path of an antenna. In certain embodiments, the antenna array system combines the antenna signals in the Radio Frequency (RF) domain before analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion, thereby reducing the amount of hardware required when compared to antenna array systems where the antenna signals are combined digitally. In doing so, signals from antennas are combined with signals from a plurality of antennas to determine if they improve signal quality. Only signals determined to improve signal quality are maintained as active. In accordance with other aspects, the antenna system selects parameter settings for the antenna array to provide enhanced performance.

  • Patent number: 6159036
Abstract: A locking latch mechanism for an insulation displacement connector comprises a cap section including a biasing member, a base section and a latch member. The cap section is movable between an open position and a closed position. The base section is hingedly connected to the cap section and includes a latch retaining portion. The latch member is movable between an engaged position and a disengaged position such that the latch member maintains the cap section in the closed position when the latch member is in the engaged position. The latch member includes a latch engaging portion which is lockingly matingly engaged with the latch retaining portion to lock the latch in the engaged position, thereby maintaining the cap section in the closed position.

  • Patent number: 6161193
Abstract: A distributed computing system includes a number of computers, workstations or other computing machines interconnected by a network. A non-interactive process arriving in a host machine of the system is migrated for execution to at least two remote machines. For example, first and second executions of the process may be started on respective first and second remote machines. One of the first and second executions of the process is then used to provide an on-demand checkpoint for the other execution of the process in the event the other execution is terminated, such that an additional execution of the process can be started from the on-demand checkpoint. This on-demand checkpointing is augmented with periodic checkpointing performed on at least one of the multiple executions of the process.

  • Patent number: 6160996
Abstract: A method for linearizing amplifiers by measuring the intermodulation products at the output of the linearized amplifier using minimum additional hardware without the performance problems associated with pilot tones. In one embodiment, the amplifiers are adaptively linearized using performance monitoring radios. Specifically, the performance monitoring radios are used to measure the signal levels of the intermodulation products in unused communication channels. Such measurements are then used to adaptively linearize the amplifiers and reduce the levels of intermodulation products.

  • Patent number: 6155146
Abstract: A tuning wrench for tuning optical fiber connectors has an enlarged portion from which extends a limiting portion having a diameter greater than the diameter of the opening in the ferrule housing portion of an optical connector. A tubular member protrudes from the limiting portion and has an internal diameter dimensioned to slide over the connector ferrule. The distal end of the tubular member has a pair of tangs adapted to fit within or openings in the front of the flange portion of the ferrule-barrel member of the connector. The distance from the face of the limiting member to the tangs is such that axial pressure on the wrench moves the flange rearwardly out of engagement with its housing but the face of the limiting member butts against the front of the housing before the spring member within the housing bottoms. Rotation of the wrench thus causes rotation of the ferrule-barrel assembly to alter the angular orientation of the eccentricity vector of the ferrule.

  • Patent number: 6157616
Abstract: A method for transmission of digital information packets over a transmission channel. A transmitter computes a current value of a carrier-sense defer threshold and a transmit power level, based an observed ratios between recent packet transmission successes, recent packet collisions, recent packet deferrals, and an estimate of a path-loss characteristic of the transmission channel. The computed power level and carrier-sense defer threshold are selected to obtain a desired ratio of at least two of future packet success, future packet collisions, or future packet deferrals. The current carrier-sense defer threshold value is used to determine when a carrier signal for another transmitter's digital information packet is present on the transmission channel; transmission is deferred until the channel is determined to be clear of other packets. The packet is then transmitted at the computed power level.

  • Patent number: 6155891
Abstract: A method of making wiring connections which are protected against environmental conditions. A wire wrap terminal is first coated with a thin film of silicone gel. After the silicone gel has cured, a wire is wrapped around the terminal. The wire displaces the silicone gel as it is wrapped around the terminal. Silicone gel trapped between the terminal and the windings of the wire prevents environmental elements from getting to and degrading the electrical contact interface between the wire and the terminal.
