Abstract: An apparatus and method for distributing product samples to consumers along with a publication is disclosed in which a container is provided with cut-out recesses having a shape conforming to that of the samples. The samples are visibly retained within the recesses by a shrinkwrap covering surrounding the container. The container is then packaged with the publication within the protective shrinkwrap covering of the publication. The sample container is constructed from a compressible material that absorbs shocks and forces exerted on the container, thereby protecting the samples from damage.

Abstract: A clutch construction for a reversible walk-behind soil compactor. The compactor includes a frame which carries a soil compacting plate and a drive mechanism, such as a gasoline engine is mounted on the frame and has a rotatable drive shaft. A pair of eccentrically weighted shafts are mounted for rotation on the frame and a belt drive connects each eccentric shaft with the drive shaft in a manner to rotate the eccentric shafts in opposite directions. Each belt drive is connected through a clutch to the drive shaft and the clutch is arranged such that each eccentric shaft is individually engaged with the drive shaft. Through manual operation of the clutch, the eccentric shafts are selectively rotated to thereby move the compactor in a forward or reverse direction over the soil to be compacted.

Abstract: A roll, specifically a paper machine press roll, with a hollow rotatable roll body features a roll shell and on at least one of its two ends a hollow roll journal. A guide body which is stationary or fastened to the roll body extends through the interior of the roll body and forms with the roll shell a channel system through which a tempering medium flows. For purposes of using air as tempering medium, a pressure blower and/or a suction blower are connected to the channel system. The channel system and the blower(s) are so dimensioned that an air flow velocity above 10 m/sec will materialize in the channel system.
Abstract: A vehicle alarm for preventing injury to persons near the vehicle. Persons under and around a vehicle such as a school bus are detected by establishing an energy field and monitoring for disturbances therein. At least one transmitter establishes the energy field in areas of high risk. One or more receivers detect a signal resulting from the energy field. These signals are monitored by a processor unit for amplitude variations therein. The processor unit preferably stores the amplitude of the received signal when no persons are present and establishes one or more thresholds preferably in accordance with the stored amplitude. The received signal is subsequently monitored for variations that result in a threshold crossing indicating the unwanted presence of a person in a danger zone. When a threshold crossing is detected an alarm is activated.
Abstract: In a cellular radio communications network a plurality of mobile switching centers have data access to a subscriber interrogation point which maintains a database identifying the home exchange of a plurality of mobile stations, the home exchanges of which are within a given region. When a roaming mobile subscriber seeks to register with a visited exchange, that exchange contacts a subscriber interrogation point identified in its own database as being associated with the roaming mobile in order to locate within the database of the subscriber interrogation point the home exchange of the mobile seeking to register. Maintenance of the home exchange identification information in the database of a subscriber interrogation point, rather than in the database of each potentially visited exchange, greatly simplifies database maintenance when the home exchange of a mobile station is changed.

Abstract: An inverse dual converter circuit (20) provides continuous voltage step-up or step-down control over a wide range and without the need of a transformer. The converter comprises an input DC voltage source (22) for generating an input DC voltage. An inverse dual converter bridge receives the input DC voltage and comprises a network of source voltage converters (26), an AC link circuit (28), and a network of load voltage converters (32). The source voltage converters (26) and load voltage converters (32) operate at the same frequency, but at a different phase. The AC link circuit (28) stores energy to be transferred from the source voltage converters (26) to the load voltage converters (32) and supplies reverse voltage bias for commutation. The inverse dual DC-DC (20) converter may include circuitry (180) for controlling the output DC voltage and for regulating output current continuity. Topological variations of the basic circuit include transformer coupled (140), multi-phase (80) and multi-pulse derivations.
Abstract: A static, sector-type water sprinkler producing a variable-sector water-distribution pattern, includes an outlet opening having an effective length around the circumference of its housing which may be manually varied for preselecting the sector angle of the water distribution around the sprinkler. The outlet opening is defined by a helical slot, and its effective lenth is varied by a blocking member which is manually movable with respect to the slot to preselect the portion thereof to be unblocked, and thereby the sector angle of the water to be distributed around the sprinkler.
Abstract: A two-way, inline, hydraulic valve through which fluid can flow in reverse and in forward directions has a reverse flow passage including a check valve preventing forward direction fluid flow therethrough. Forward direction fluid flow is controlled by a movable, spring-biased, normally closed, spool valve having one end exposed to forward direction fluid pressure and an opposite end forming a piston acting in a cylindrical cavity containing a volume of fluid. Movement of the spool valve to open position in response to forward direction fluid pressure sufficient to overcome the spring bias causes the volume of fluid to be forced from the cavity through a restricted passage, thereby providing a time delay in the opening of the two-way valve for forward direction fluid flow. In an alternative embodiment, a sleeve valve mounted on the spool valve provides a by-pass permitting forward direction fluid flow under abnormally low forward direction fluid pressure.

Abstract: A dry end of a paper making machine comprising two dryer groups of dryer cylinders each followed by a respective web path reversal roll, which may be in the form of a suction guide roll, and a respective porous web support belt that meanders past each dryer cylinder and the next web path reversal roll for each dryer group. The last one of the first dryer group reversal rolls and the first one of the second dryer group reversal rolls, and additional guide rolls for guiding both the first and the second support belts, being so placed that at the place where the web is transferred from the first support belt to the second support belt, there is a spaced distance between the first and the second support belts. A web separation device generally inside the loop of the first support belt and opposite the first one of the second reversal rolls directs air through the first support belt to help transfer the web from the first support belt to the second support belt at the first one of the second reversal rolls.
Abstract: A spreading device is disclosed including two impellers mounted to rotate in rotational correspondence about their axes toward one another as the device is moved in a forwardly advancing direction so as to broadcast particulate materials deposited thereon in a controlled distribution pattern along a predetermined distribution path generally in the direction of advancement of the device onto a selected target area.
Abstract: Symbols in a symbol sequence transmitted via a fading channel are estimated in an equalizer having a channel estimating filter. An error signal influences an adaptation circuit which controls adjustable coefficients so as to form a channel estimate, which is adapted during the whole of the symbol sequence. The adaptation circuit performs an adaptation algorithm, which is influenced by mean energy values obtained from the channel estimate in a mean-value-forming circuit. Subsequent to fading the adaptation algorithm is able to control the coefficients so that one of the coefficients will erroneously dominate the channel estimate, with erroneous estimation of symbols as a result. This is counteracted by selecting the largest of the mean energy values, this largest value influencing the adaptation algorithm.
Abstract: An arrowhead for use in a ballistic arrow having a radio locating transmitter comprises a composite structure of a dielectric shank having a plurality of electrically conductive blades that function as a counterpoise for a primary antenna of the transmitter. The blades are disposed symmetrically about a long axis of the shank in respective, uniformly spaced planes that extend radially outwardly from the outer surface of the shank. Another embodiment of the composite arrowhead comprises a unitary dielectric shank and blades wherein the counterpoise is formed by deposition of a thin metal layer on at least a portion of the shank and blade surfaces. The combination of the dielectric shank which is of low density and the electrically conductive counterpoise that is of small mass, effects an overall weight reduction in the arrow to achieve a flatter trajectory and increased flight range.
Abstract: A wireless communication system is adapted to be used as an intercom system in a multiple customer station configuration. A customer service representative portable transceiver communicates wirelessly with a stationary base station to enable the representative to move freely about, and thus be able to perform other tasks. The base station is connected electrically to a group of substantially similar physically spaced apart remote customer drive up stations. Each of the remote stations includes a call initiating device for enabling a customer at a drive up station to request communications with the representative. The base station includes a signal generator, which responds to a call initiating device requesting a communication link. A transmitter responds to the generator to send an attention attracting signal to the representative's transceiver, so that the representative can cause the establishment of an audio communication link to a selected customer station.
