Abstract: An improved transfer printing press of the type having a plurality of beds having a top surface, a device for squeegeeing ink through a screen onto a substrate, a device for curing the ink remaining on the substrate, and a device for drawing air through the bed, wherein the improvement comprises an air permeable material interposed between the top surface of the bed and the substrate to be printed to keep said substrate at a substantially uniform temperature.
Abstract: The invention relates to an expression vector system based on the regulation of bacterial luminescence (the lux gene system). The invention further relates to the construction of a precisely regulatable expression vector system which comprises a complete luxR gene in combination with an inactivated luxI gene. If the system is turned off, no significant transcription occurs of any cloned gene product when used in combination with the regulatory scheme of the invention as is demonstrated by using the bacteriophage .lambda. lysis genes. The induction of transcription relies on the addition of exogenous autoinducer which is both inexpensive and easy-to-use and which is required in only minute amounts.

Abstract: An integrated semiconductor circuit includes a substrate, an epitaxial layer having transistor base regions, a first and a second (11) insulating oxide layer, and a protective layer. The first oxide layer carries heavily doped polycrystalline layers, including an electric contact layer, a screening layer and a connecting layer. The connecting layer electrically connects the screening layer to the epitaxial layer, through the electric contact layer. The screening layer prevents the occurrence of inversion and parasite components in the epitaxial layer between the base regions. The polycrystalline layer arrangement is simple and can be produced in a common process step. The arrangement is able to withstand high temperatures and enables the second insulating layer to be readily applied.
Abstract: Apparatus for sensing intrusion into a predefined perimeter comprises means for producing a coherent pulsed light, which is injected into an optical sensing fiber having a first predetermined length and positioned along the predefined perimeter. A backscattered light in response to receiving the coherent light pulses is produced and coupled into an optical receiving fiber. The backscattered light is detected by a photodetector and a signal indicative of the backscattered light is produced. An intrusion is detectable from the produced signal as indicated by a change in the backscattered light. To increase the sensitivity of the apparatus, a reference fiber and an interferometer may also be employed.

Abstract: A trash compactor is provided that has a single ram that simultaneously precompacts trash in an auxiliary precompacting chamber and compacts trash that has already been precompacted in a main copacting and storage chamber. The ram has a single actuating device and efficiently provides for both precompacting in the auxiliary precompacting chamber and for compacting in the compacting and storage chamber with each stroke of the ram.
Abstract: A noncatalytic process for producing sulfur trioxide and sulfuric acid in which sulfur is combusted with an oxygen-rich gas in the presence of recycled sulfur dioxide-rich gas to form sulfur trioxide which is absorbed in sulfuric acid and yield a sulfur dioxide rich gas which is compressed to form the recycled sulfur dioxide rich gas.
Abstract: A novel compound for the treatment and prevention of ocular inflammation is disclosed. The compound, OB-101, is effective at both the early and late phases of inflammation. The compound is useful for the treatment of inflammation in both the anterior and posterior portions of the eye.
Abstract: A resilient coupling has a hydraulic damping appliance for torsional oscillations. Between a first and a second coupling half there is provided a suspended damping ring, which is not connected in a form-locking manner with either of the two coupling halves, but which forms displacement chambers of different sizes with both coupling halves. In this way the coupling is in a position to counteract torsional oscillations having small amplitudes with weak damping and oscillations having large amplitudes with strong damping. From the kinematic point of view the suspended damping ring is at any one time a component of the first or the second coupling half.
Abstract: A method for positioning excitation pulses for a linear predictive coder (LPC) operating according to the multi-pulse principle, i.e. a number of such pulses are positioned at specific time points and with specific amplitudes. The time points and the amplitudes are determined from the predictive parameters (a.sub.k) and the predictive residue signal (d.sub.k), by correlation between a speech representative signal (y) and a composed synthesized signal (y). All possible time positions for the excitation pulses within a given frame interval are provided. The possible time positions are divided into a number (n.sub.f) of phase positions and each phase position is divided into a number of phases (f). All phases are vacant for the first excitation pulse. When this pulse has been positioned, the phase determined for this pulse is denied to the following excitation pulses until all pulses in a frame have been positioned.
Abstract: A plow debris deflector for attachment to plows is disclosed. The plow debris deflector improves trash flow, buries stalks, stems, leaves and other debris without discing and requires low maintenance while providing excellent soil rotation and burying cover crops, trash, litter and other debris eight to ten inches beneath the surface of the soil. The plow debris deflector may include a first vertical portion having a mounting mechanism for mounting the plow debris deflector to a moldboard plow. The mounting mechanism may include a plow connecting slot so the debris deflector may be interchangeably mounted to a variety of plows. A lower portion of the plow debris deflector may be custom designed to complement the shape of the plow to which it is attached. The plow debris deflector includes a second horizontal portion, which may include a curved and twisted plate member for deflecting stalks and stems of various heights.
Abstract: In an elastic clutch of disk design, particularly a split flywheel for an internal combustion engine, a coupling including an oblong spring is arranged between two coupling halves that are mutually rotatable. Essentially stretched in relaxed condition, the spring is subdivided in two or more partial sections by wedge-shaped spring cups, the longitudinal axes of which partial sections have relative to one another a buckled arrangement. Obtained in this way is a spring favorable for specific operating conditions, with a low spring stiffness, but with the spring being composed of essentially straight-line partial sections. Provided thereby is a spring that can be manufactured at low cost, which, in operation, is favorably stressed and not subjected to any wear.
Abstract: An adjustable-resistance anti-siphon device for a cerebrospinal fluid shunt is provided. The device has a substantially rigid housing having an internal cavity which contains a first chamber and a second chamber, the first chamber having at least one flexible wall, an inlet port and an outlet port, the ports passing through apertures in the housing; the second chamber being gas-filled and being in pressure communication with at least a portion of the at least one flexible wall of the first chamber; and gas pressure control means connected to said gas-filled chamber whereby the pressure in said gas-filled chamber may be adjusted.

Abstract: A method for compensating for non-linearities in an end amplifier (F) having a given transfer function H.sub.R, H.sub..phi. for amplitude and phase respectively and included in a radio transmitter of quadrature type for linear, digital modulation, and in which table look-up units (ST, CT) store the digital sine and cosine values (I(t,.alpha.), Q(t,.alpha.)) of the quadrature components determined by a given signal vector .alpha.. According to the method of values of the transfer functions H.sub.R, H.sub..phi. for the quadrature modulated radio signals r(t,.alpha.) are calculated by addressing memory units (MH1, MH2) which store a number of values of H.sub.R and H.sub..phi.. The sine and cosine values of the addressed values of H.sub.R and H.sub..phi. are also formed. The thus calculated values are multiplied by the stored digital values in the table look-up units (ST, CT) and by the inverted value of H.sub.R. As a result, new modified values i(t,.alpha.), q(t,.alpha.
Abstract: A low brightness pigment and method is provided from a heretofore rejected waste kaolin stream. Kaolin processing rejects are high in iron-stained TiO.sub.2. Abstract: An optical terminal has optical waveguides, 3-dB couplers, laser diodes, laser diodes provided with gratings, and connections on a substrate made of semiconductor material. The grating laser diodes have an external cavity which is formed by the waveguides and delimited by mirrors. Each of the laser diodes has a respective electrical connection through which the diodes can be switched between a light-absorbing mode, a light-amplifying mode, and a light-emitting mode, with the aid of electric current signals, and the diodes are also able to detect a light signal. The terminal can perform a number of functions. A light signal can be received, detected, amplified, and further transmitted. A narrow band light signal of desired wavelength can be generated within a broad wavelength area through the grating diodes in the cavity, and amplified and further transmitted.
Abstract: A rotor supports a plurality of marking devices in spaced relation around the arcuate surface of an object to be marked which is fixed relative to the rotor. The rotor is mounted for rotation about an axis which is coaxial with an axis of the object to be marked. The rotor is also linearly movable on the axis. Each marking device includes a single impact pin positioned to extend and retract relative to the object to impress an identification mark, such as a dot, on the arcuate surface of the object. The impact pins are remotely controlled by a computer to inscribe on the object an array of dots in parallel rows to form desired programmed characters on the object. The impact pins are moved in a raster pattern by rotational and linear movement of the rotor in a preselected direction relative to the object. The impact pins are actuated to impress dots on the surface of the object in a first arcuate row.
