  • Patent number: 5201842
Abstract: The invention concerns a coupling with a hub, for transmitting a torque to a shaft, with a cylindrical annular chamber arranged in the hub at a slight spacing from the shaft. The annular chamber can be pressurized with an hydraulically actuated servo valve arranged in the hydraulic fluid channel connecting to said annular chamber. A separate hydraulic fluid channel serves to actuate the servo valve. As control pressure is admitted to this second hydraulic fluid channel, the servo valve opens and establishes the connection between the first hydraulic fluid channel and the annular chamber for admission of a high-pressure medium. The advance of the connecting nipples onto the hub may be effected by remote actuation, thus enabling an automatic roll change, for instance in a rolling mill, without difficult and time-consuming manual assembly in congested space conditions.

  • Patent number: 5202941
Abstract: Polarization independent switch or coupler including a directional coupler with extremely relaxed fabrication tolerances. The coupler includes a mono-crystalline wafer of electro-optic material with two closely adjacent light waveguides at an upper surface along with electrodes positioned adjacent the waveguides. The electrodes include a grounded, main electrode formed on one side of the waveguides and four smaller electrodes formed in a line on a side or sides of the waveguides opposite to the main electrode, each of the four smaller electrodes being supplied with a voltage. The electrodes and waveguides can be in a planar or stacked relationship to one another. When the voltages applied to the middle two electrodes have equal values and have like polarity (V.sub.c =V.sub.b) and the voltages applied to the outer electrodes have equal values and like polarity (V.sub.d =V.sub.a), the light travelling in one waveguide is barred from transferring to another waveguide.

  • Patent number: 5203026
Abstract: The invention relates to the selection of an antenna in a receiver of a mobile radio station which forms part of a time-multiplexed radio communication system. The signal strength of each antenna is measured in each time slot which immediately precedes the time slot intended for the station concerned, and the antenna selection is effected in dependence on the measured signal strengths. In order to eliminate the risk of unsuitable antenna selection as a result of momentary falls in signal strength, the signal strength for each antenna is measured on several occasions during the time slot in which the measurements take place. The signal-strength values for each antenna are thereafter combined linearly, so as to form a suitability measurement. The antenna having the highest suitability measurement is selected for the next arriving time slot.

  • Patent number: 5200378
Abstract: A process is disclosed for pillaring layered materials which do not swell appreciably in water. The process comprises first intercalating an amine or other neutral molecule such as an amide or dimethyl sulfoxide between the layers of the material to be pillared. This allows the subsequent incorporation of inorganic pillars which are more temperature stable than the intercalated amine. Also, disclosed are different pillared products produced by the process. The starting materials do not appreciably swell in water and the pillared composition final product is produced by swelling with an inorganic intercalate and then displacing the inorganic intercalate with an inorganic pillaring substance.

  • Patent number: 5199339
Abstract: A semi automated hole punch translates a punch and die assembly across the end of an H beam or the like to punch each of a plurality of holes in accordance with an interchangeable template. The punch and die assembly travel across the H beam in response to operation of a power source until a manually operated pivotable arm supporting a pin is brought into engagement with a hole in a template. Upon engagement, the translatory movement of the punch and die assembly ceases and an operator can actuate the punch. Upon lifting the handle to disengage the pin, translatory movement of the punch and die assembly will continue until the pin becomes engaged with a succeeding hole in the template.

  • Patent number: 5197013
Abstract: A computer-produced carved sign having three-dimensional surfaces, is produced by a method which comprises designing on a computer-aided design system, a three-dimensional graphical model of the signage work having three-dimensional surfaces to be carved in a signboard. On the computer-aided design system, a desired mathematical representation of the three-dimensional graphical model of the signage work to be carved in the signboard, is determined, and the desired mathematical representation is provided to a computer-aided machining system having a carving tool. Material constituting the signboard is removed using the carving tool moving under the controlled guidance of the computer-aided machining system. The CAD system allows the user to input an alpha-numeric character. The CAD system automatically creates the machining path by developing similar outlines of the alpha-numeric character and projects these outlines into the 3D graphical model.
