Abstract: A rotary exercise apparatus includes a frame which supports a seat assembly and a rotary crank mechanism. The frame has two sets of legs, one which supports the apparatus in an upright position where the crank mechanism can be used by someone sitting on the seat assembly to perform upper body exercises, and another which supports the apparatus in a reclined position where the crank mechanism can be used by someone sitting on the seat assembly to perform lower body exercises. The crank mechanism permits variable amounts of resistance to be imparted against its rotation by urging a shoe having a high friction liner against a rotatably mounted shaft that carries the crank arms. The location of the crank mechanism along the frame and the length of the arms are adjustable to accommodate different size users. In addition, the arms are replaceable to permit different size and shape arms carrying appropriate engagement devices to be used for each type of exercise.

Abstract: A micro heat pipe, formed in a semiconductor substrate, carries heat from a region of heat flux in the substrate to a region of lower heat flux. The micro heat pipe is formed by cutting a groove into the substrate opposite a site where devices have been formed or are to be formed. Vapor deposited layers are then formed on the substrate to define the micro heat pipe. A fraction of the pipe is filled with a coolant or other working fluid and the pipe is sealed. A micro heat pipe may also be formed by etching a channel down into the substrate, oxidizing the surfaces of the channel, charging the channel with a cooling medium to fill a fraction of the channel and sealing the end of the channel. In operation, the working fluid evaporates in the region of high heat flux and condenses in the region of lower heat flux resulting in the transfer or redistribution of the fluid's heat of vaporization.

Abstract: It has been discovered that certain minerals, particularly various naturally occurring forms of aluminum oxide, will preferentially bind selective mycotoxins from a mixture of mycotoxins. These adsorbants, when used in various combinations and/or in conjunction with the adsorbants of the prior art, permit the construction of detector tubes which can resolve mycotoxins in solution and provide a semi-quantitative fluorescent determination of their concentration in feed or foodstuff samples. The detector tubes comprise transparent tubes packed with isolated layers of selected minerals. A solvent extract from a sample potentially contaminated with mycotoxins is passed through the column. As the mycotoxin mixture passes through the detector tube and is contacted by the various mineral adsorbants, selected mycotoxins are immobilized on a specific mineral while other mycotoxins and co-extracted organic compounds pass through that layer to be immobilized on subsequent downstream mineral layers.

Abstract: The device comprises a drum drier with parallel streams (1) fed with recycled materials and a drum drier and countercurrent mixer (2) fed with virgin aggregates at its entry end (2a). The exit end (1b) of the drum with parallel streams (1) through which the dried and preheated recycled materials leave is connected to a ring (26) for introducing materials through the side wall of the countercurrent drum (2) through a chute for transferring the recycled materials. The ring (26) for introducing the recycled materials opens into a recycling and mixing zone (23) situated in the countercurrent drum (2) around the body of the burner (10), between the flame zone (22) and the mixing zone (24). The dried and heated recycled materials (8) are transferred continuously into the recycling zone (23) of the countercurrent drum (2).
Abstract: A pelletized form of silica which is sufficiently dust free and highly dispersible in rubber formulations. The pelletized silica is produced by a process which involves pelletizing a mixture of silica and water in an inclined mixer and drying the pelletized product in a fluidized bed dryer.
Abstract: A casting blank for forming orthopedic casts is provided with two layers of plaster splints having different setting rates or times. The plaster splint layer disposed on a lower sheet of the casting blank sets more slowly than the layer disposed on an upper sheet of the blank. The quicker setting upper plaster splint layer rapidly immobilizes the injured body part, while the slower setting lower splint layer results in greater final cure strength and insulates the body part from the heat generated by the upper layer to prevent burning of the skin surface. The slower setting lower splint layer adapts more completely to the contours of the body portion to increase patient comfort.
Abstract: The present invention pertains to a device for measuring the urine flow (Uroflow) of a patient, consisting of a measuring head provided with a funnel and an outflow port, and of an electronic evaluating unit.In a prior-art measuring device of this class, the measuring head is mounted oscillatingly in a housing. This has disadvantages in terms of the mechanical design of the measuring device and the accuracy of measurement. To simplify the mechanical design and to increase the accuracy of measurement, the measuring head 1 is provided, according to the present invention, with a slotted pitot tube 4 forming the outflow port 30 and with a pressure sensor 18 measuring the dynamic pressure, and the electronic evaluating unit 9 calculates the flow values from the flow-proportional dynamic pressure measured.
Abstract: A battery charging system which prevents false switching from a fast charge mode to a trickle charge mode due to low frequency voltage aberration signals. The battery charging system includes a battery voltage analyzer and a plurality of battery charging and conditioning units for charging different types and kinds of nickel cadmium batteries. Firmware in the microprocessor rejects low frequency aberrations permitting a desired voltage signal to be produced which is indicative of the actual battery potential for charge switching purposes.
Abstract: A system for robot manipulator calibration by locating a physcial object by determining the position of the object relative to a sensor, which is attached to the manipulator. The sensor consists of a support member and at least three sensor members which are mounted to the support member and are arranged to make tangential contact with a curved surface, preferably a spherical surface, simultaneously at three spaced points on the surface, upon such contact the object is deemed to be "located". Tangential contact is accomplished by the use of light beams as sensors.
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a coin rejector for accepting multiple coins. Upon sequential insertion of two coins of the desired size, a customer can rotate a handle to operate a vending machine. The device employs a rotatable wheel which accepts the disks, positions them adjacently edge-to-edge such that the outer edge of the second disk disables a blocking member which otherwise prevents vending, and deposits the disks into a collection chamber.
Abstract: A gear drive sprinkler includes a fixed ring gear fixed to the sprinkler housing and having a circular array of teeth; a rotatable ring grear coupled to the sprinkler nozzle and having a circular array of teeth coaxial with, but of a different number than, the teeth of the fixed ring gear; and a planetary gear rotated by the sprinkler drive and having a circular array of teeth meshing with the teeth of both ring gears so as to planetate around both ring gears and thereby to rotate the rotatable ring gear at an angular velocity corresponding to the difference in the number of teeth in the two ring gears.
Abstract: A handoff system where handoff requests are initiated not only by a home or serving base station, but also by neighboring base stations. As in conventional handoff, a serving base station may initiate a handoff request when the signal strength of one of its mobile stations falls below a predetermined threshold. In addition, neighboring base stations monitor the signal strength of neighboring mobile stations and request that a neighboring mobile station be handed off when that signal strength reaches a predetermined level. Thus, a handoff request may come from the serving base station because of a poor call connection or from a neighboring base station because of a possible strong call connection.
Abstract: An adsorbent neutralizer for absorbing, without disguising, odorous gases from soiled matter in a relatively large container having a closable opening at least the size of a hand. The adsorbent neutralizer is contained in a perforated receptacle and may be engaged relative to the container via adhesive strips or via a perforated holder on the container. The container may be a plastic trash bag having the absorbent neutralizer on an inside surface.
Abstract: A pole for effecting the manual movement of a load of vertically stacked units, such as bottle cases, comprises two telescopically related body members having a grasping element at one exposed end for engaging the lower portion of the stacked load and a transverse handle, mounted on the other exposed end of the telescoped body members and rotatable about the axis of the telescoped body members.
Abstract: A family of novel and unique synthetic alkali metal alumino-silicates (SAMS) are produced by the hydrothermal reaction between kaolin and alkali metal silicates. The integrated composition of the SAMS products is a unique entity having an overall composition ofxM.sub.2 O:Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 :ySiO.sub.2 :zH.sub.2 Owhere x is the number of moles of alkali metal oxide and is an integer from 0.01 to 2.0, M is the alkali metal, y is the number of moles of SiO.sub.2 in the unique SAMS compositions and is an integer greater than 2.0, and z is the number of moles of bound water and is an integer ranging from 1.0 to 5.0. The unique SAMS compositions are structured materials in which the structure can be controlled, and are therefore useful as functional fillers, as TiO.sub.2 extenders, as silica extenders or as reinforcing agents for paper, paint, rubber, plastics and specialty products.
Abstract: A rolling door assembly including a flexible curtain having an inner end, an outer end and side edges. The inner end of this curtain is mounted to a rotatable curtain roll. The assembly includes a sprocket mounted on the curtain roll and a continuous chain loop that extends around this sprocket and is connected to a motor drive to form a curtain winding and unwinding mechanism. Two drive loop members are in operable engagement with the curtain roll for purposes of loop travel during rotation of the roll. The bottom end of the curtain is secured to the two drive members so that the bottom end and the drive loop members travel together. There are also two adjusting mechanisms connected between the bottom end of the curtain and the two loop members to accommodate a difference in speed of travel between the loop members and the bottom end of the curtain, the latter moving at a variable speed as the curtain is wound or unwound.
Abstract: A coating process for coating traveling webs comprises applying a first coating layer of a pigment substance on a portion of the shell surface of a rotatable roll not covered by the material web, and pressing the pigment substance onto the web in a press gap, thereby impregnating the web. This makes it possible to apply with maximum uniformity and without web breaks and wrinkles a second coating layer of a pigment substance immediately successive to the application of the first layer, while the first layer is still moist.
Abstract: A circuit (4) for generating metering pulses (P) includes a multiplier circuit (MULT), a bandpass filter (BF), a comparison circuit (COMP) and a ramp signal generator (RAMP). A current (IC) from the ramp signal generator is multiplied (MULT) by an alternating voltage (VTXX) such as to form the metering pulse (P), which is transmitted, together with a speech signal (SP), to a subscriber (1) for registration. The output voltage (UF) of the bandpass filter (BF) is compared with a reference voltage (UR) in the comparison circuit (COMP). The output (9a) of the comparison circuit is electrically conductive only when the filter voltage (UF) exceeds the reference voltage (UR). When control signals (D) open a switch (SW), a capacitor (C1) is charged by a first current generator (10). The capacitor voltage (VC) incresases linearly and controls proportionally the current (IC) of the ramp signal generator (RAMP).
