  • Patent number: 5642706
Abstract: A combustion chamber formed by a recess in the piston of an internal combustion engine is divided by restrictions into two or more partial chambers. The ratio between the minimum distance in the area of the restrictions and the maximum distance in concave areas of the wall of the combustion chamber, as measured from the axis of the combustion chamber, is between 0.2 and 0.5. In the area of the minimum distance downstream of the restriction, the wall of each partial chamber is inclined relative to the axis of the combustion chamber, the inclination decreasing continuously in downstream direction. To achieve extremely lean operation with low exhaust emissions, the fuel injection device is located in a position eccentric to the center of the combustion chamber, and the ignition device is located approximately in the center of the combustion chamber.

  • Patent number: 5644049
Abstract: Provided is a biomaterial comprising an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN), wherein one of the polymer components is an acidic polysaccharide or a semi-synthetic derivative thereof. The polysaccharide can be hyaluronic acid, and the second polymer component can be a non-toxic, non-carcinogenic synthetic chemical polymer. The derivative can be a total or partial hyaluronic acid ester or a hyaluronic acid salt. The ester or salt can be formed with a pharmacologically active molecule. Methods for preparing the IPN are also disclosed. The acidic polysaccharide or derivative thereof and the synthetic chemical polymer comprising the IPN can be cross-linked, or the synthetic chemical polymer can be grafted onto the acidic polysaccharide. The cross-linking or grafting can be achieved using compounds capable of generating radicals, or via functional groups on the acidic polysaccharide and the synthetic chemical polymer. The IPN can be formed prior to cross-linking or grafting.

  • Patent number: 5644397
Abstract: A number of optical interferometric sensor configurations are provided. The interferometric sensors include a polarization maintaining optic fiber forming either a loop or linear optical path. Circularly polarized light propagate along the optical path and pass through a field-sensitive sensing medium. A differential phase shift induced in the light waves by a magnetic field is then detected by a photodetector and associated signal processing electronics.

  • Patent number: 5641271
Abstract: Pump (1) includes a pneumatic valve assembly (98) having a chamber (105) which is supplied by compressed air via an inlet pipe. Included within chamber (105) is a valve (109) with a chamber (111) divided into two separate compartments (112,113) by a pliant diaphragm (114). Diaphragm (114) is biased toward compartment (112) by a spring (115) and supports a plunger (116) which extends from chamber (111) and includes a frusto conical end (117) for selectively engaging seat face (99) and preventing air flow between chambers (105,90). Two air bleed passageways (119,120) respectively extend from chamber (90) and compartment (113) to atmosphere for allowing a gradual return to atmospheric pressure therein when the supply of compressed air is discontinued. A further bleed passageway (121) extends through diaphragm (114) to ensure a gradual equalization of pressure in compartments (112,113) such that the diaphragm will return to its original biased position.

  • Patent number: 5641037
Abstract: The invention is a wiping bar of a rail lubrication apparatus of the type used with a rail having a base with outwardly extending flanges, a head, and a web connecting the base and the head, where the lubrication apparatus is comprised of a wiping bar and a first set of clamps for maintaining the wiping bar in position with respect to the rail. The lubrication apparatus also comprises a pump actuator and a second set of clamps for maintaining the pump actuator in position with the rail. The rail lubrication apparatus may be used with a pump, responsive to the pump actuator, for pumping a lubricant from a reservoir to the wiping bar to form a complete rail lubrication system. Specifically, the wiping bar of the present invention includes an improved distribution blade over those known in the art. Further, the wiping bar of the present invention includes the improvement of coating the surface of the wiping bar contacting the lubricant with an anti-stick material.

  • Patent number: 5640909
Abstract: A track is tamped and stabilized at a desired level by lifting the track to a temporary level, intermittently tamping the track and then advancing along the track in an operating direction in continuously repeated tamping cycles, and in continuously repeated stabilizing cycles parallel to and following the tamping cycles in the operating direction, intermittently stabilizing the tamped track at the desired level by imparting to the track horizontal vibrations extending in a direction perpendicular to the track, and applying to the vibrating track a vertical load at a value automatically controlled to rise to a maximum value required to lower the track to the desired level and then reduced to a value to relieve the load.

  • Patent number: 5641139
Abstract: A furniture leg attached to the underside of the frame of a piece of furniture. The furniture leg has a vertical bore through which a bolt is threadedly screwed into an internally-threaded insert on the frame, entrapping the furniture leg between the head of the bolt and the frame. In some embodiments, at least one, and preferably two, teeth extend upwardly from the upper surface of the furniture leg and pierce through the upholstery and into the frame, preventing the furniture leg from rotating about the axis of the bolt. In other embodiments, at least one, and preferably two, corrugated joiners extend upwardly from the upper surface of the furniture leg and pierce through the upholstery and into the frame, preventing the furniture leg from rotating about the axis of the bolt. One of the corrugated joiners may span a seam between bondedly and abuttingly joined pieces of the furniture leg, thereby also providing additional structural joining of the pieces of the furniture leg.

  • Patent number: 5642453
Abstract: An optical device includes a waveguide and a film or layer of a material having highly nonlinear optical characteristics, in particular a semiconductor material. The film is located so close to the waveguide core that the evanescent field of light propagating along the waveguide extends up to the film. In this optical device, the large nonlinear properties of the material influence the optical characteristics of the waveguide. When positioned along a similar D-fiber, the device can be used as a fiber-based, nonlinear coupler controlled by a relatively weak light signal. The same device can be used as an element of a laser and in a number of various other applications.
