  • Patent number: 6345536
Abstract: This invention is related to flow meter instrumentation. More particularly, the invention is related to obstruction flow meters which are used in series in a flow conduit to determine the volume flow rate of liquid and gas phases of fluid flowing within the conduit. Multiple flow meters including at least one obstruction type flow meter are positioned serially within a flow conduit such as a pipe. Mathematical equations are developed for each flow meter based upon measured quantities and phase flow rates within the liquid stream. These equations are then solved simultaneously to obtain the desired phase flow rates. Two flow meters are used to determine the gas and liquid flow rates. Alternately three flow meters are used to determine the flow rates of a gas and two liquid phases.

  • Patent number: 6346318
Abstract: A multilayer laminate is disclosed. The base layer is a transparent colored layer made of OPS, PET, polypropylene, polyester, or a similar material. The base layer is then metallized by a vacuum process to provide a metallized sheet or film. A second sheet or film is then laminated over the metallized layer. The laminating sheet or film is transparent and may be either clear or have a desired color so that a metallized color is seen on both sides of the sheet. If a colored laminated layer is selected then a different color is seen on each side of the sheet. The sheet may then be converted into a thermoformed tray. The use of a colored laminating sheet provides colors such as gold and metallized blue previously not available at reasonable costs.

Abstract: A method includes providing a starting material having a Young's modulus (202). Second, from a plurality of possible modifiers, a modifier is identified and selected that has a Young's modulus comparable to or greater than that of the starting material and that, when blended with the starting material, creates a blend with a stable morphology (204). Third, the scratch resistance of the starting material is increased by blending the modifier with the starting material to form a blend (206). Alternatively, the scratch resistance of the stating material is maintained while the toughness of the starting material is increased by blending the modifier with the starting material to form a blend.

  • Patent number: 6342138
Abstract: An electroplating rack includes a cathode flight bar from which depends an insulated rack bar over an acid bath. A clamp is fixed to the rack bar, and has a bridge electrically connected to the flight bar through a conducting core inside the insulated rack bar. The clamp has a main body made of plastic, which includes a slot in which protrudes the bridge. An electrically conducting spring clip is installed in the slot, and is formed of two arms continuously biased into a spreaded, opened condition in the slot. A screw carried by the main body, when rotated in a first direction, can force the spring clip into a closed condition, in which it can hold an article to be electroplated between its two arms, and in which one of the spring clip arms is forced against the bridge member. Thus, electrical current can pass through the rack flight bar and conducting core, then through the bridge member, the spring clip and finally into the article to be electroplated.

  • Patent number: 6342352
Abstract: The present invention relates to our discovery that the mxiM protein of Shigella flexneri is indispensable for the spread of Shigella from cell to cell. Thus, the invention provides the mxiM protein or peptides or portions thereof as antigens in vaccines to prevent Shigella infections and treat hosts infected with Shigella by inhibiting intercellular spread. In another aspect, the invention relates to antibodies generated against the mxiM proteins, peptides, or portions thereof to detect Shigella in contaminated food and water supplies as well as in infected hosts. The present invention also describes a method called the TIER (test of intracellular expression requirements) for determining the intracellular expression requirements of genes and therefore, permitting one to establish the role of genes in the pathogenesis of organisms. A method of detecting Shigella or Shigella mxiM DNA in a sample using a mxiM DNA probe is also described.

  • Patent number: 6341126
Abstract: In a call and connection separated network that includes a number of domains, the network has a layered structure that includes a connection layer and a service layer. In each connection domain there is a connection control process for controlling hardware. An external network is used to carry a transmission channel that originates from or terminates in the call and connection separated network. Such calls are referred to as inhomogeneous calls. A connection control process at the originating side of an inhomogeneous call uses a routing number to route the transmission channel through the external network. The routing number is administered by a service used by the control process at the terminating point of the call. The routing number follows the signalling protocol of the external network.

  • Patent number: 6339706
Abstract: The present invention relates to a wireless, voice-activated remote control device for controlling an electronic device having voice control circuitry. A short-range range wireless data and voice communication link, for example using Bluetooth technology, is established between the remote control device and the electronic device. To activate voice control circuitry in the electronic device, a user supplies an input to the remote control device. In response to the user input, wireless link circuitry within the remote control device sends a control signal, for example an AT command, to the electronic device. The electronic device receives the control signal and transmits a control signal indicating the status of the electronic device. Once the voice control circuitry is activated, the user provides a voice command to the remote control device. The remote control device transmits the voice signal to the electronic device over the wireless communication link.
