Patent number: 6359742Abstract: The invention provides a sightglass assembly for viewing the interior of a vessel, such as a reaction vessel for chemical or biochemical reactions, and is adapted to be welded to a vessel wall. The sightglass assembly comprises a window disc fused to a metal frame having a flange extending radially therefrom. The assembly is set into an appropriately sized opening in the vessel wall and the outer perimeter of the flange is welded to the vessel wall. An annular groove in the flange, surrounding the frame and window disc, absorbs stresses created by the heat of welding and thus protects the integrity of the entire unit. When installed, the sightglass assembly and inner face of the tank wall provide an easily cleanable smooth continuous surface, free of recesses and crevasses where bacteria can collect and grow or product from previous batches can accumulate and cause contamination.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 2001Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Assignee: J. Patent number: 6356351Abstract: A current sensor coil design for reducing or eliminating long undulations of magnetic sensitivity. Such reduction or elimination improves isolation of the current sensor such that proximate currents and accompanying effects do not affect the accuracy of the current sensor determination of a current being measured. Several designs, which may be incorporated separately or in combination, include modifying the specifications of the quarter waveplate, cutting the fiber of the sensor coil to a proper length, choosing a proper perimeter length of the sensor coil or head, and using a particular length of fiber adjusted to work in conjunction with a multi-wavelength or broadband light source.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2000Date of Patent: March 12, 2002Assignee: The Texas A&M University SystemInventor: James N. Patent number: 6355851Abstract: A zeolite-catalyzed cumene synthesis process in which benzene and propylene feedstocks are pre-treated to remove catalyst poisons. The benzene feedstock is pre-treated under pressure by contact with a “hot” clay bed at a temperature of about 200 to 500° C., followed by distillation of the benzene feedstock to separate the benzene from the higher molecular weight materials formed from olefinic poisons during the hot clay treatment. The benzene feed is also subjected to a “cold” clay treatment wherein the benzene distillate is contacted with an ambient-temperature clay. The propylene feedstock is pre-treated by contact with an alumina to remove trace sodium compounds and moisture, a molecular sieve to remove moisture, and two modified aluminas to remove catalyst poisons. The pre-treated propylene and benzene feedstocks are then reacted in the presence of a zeolite catalyst to form cumene without causing rapid degradation of the catalyst's activity.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2000Date of Patent: March 12, 2002Assignee: Sunoco, Inc. Patent number: 6355340Abstract: A low to near-zero metal matrix composite material featuring high modulus carbon fibers reinforcing a lightweight metal or semimetal. The fibers have a negative coefficient of thermal expansion in the axial direction. Laminates featuring parallel arrays of fibers may be cross-plied to produce quasi-isotropic properties in the composite body. The CTE of the composite body depends not only upon the relative CTE's of the fibers and matrix, and their relative amounts (e.g., loadings), but also upon the relative elastic moduli of the fibers and matrix. By intentionally introducing porosity into the matrix, the elastic modulus of the matrix is reduced, and thus the CTE of the composite body is influenced more by the CTE contribution of the fibers. In effect, the composite CTE is shifted toward that of the fibers, which shifting represents a reduction in composite CTE. Hydrogen outgassing upon solidification of the metallic matrix is one technique for producing such porosity.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 1999Date of Patent: March 12, 2002Assignee: M Cubed Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Jai R. Patent number: 6354218Abstract: A propellant system for launching a large-caliber projectile includes a propellant having at least three partial charges. The first partial charge is adapted to acceleration requirements of the projectile; the second partial charge has a higher combustion velocity than that of the first partial charge; and the third partial charge has a lower combustion velocity than that of the first partial charge. The propellant system further includes an electric energy supply and control device connected to the propellant for igniting the propellant. The electric energy supply and control device has a plasma generator for affecting a combustion behavior of the propellant such as to obtain for said first partial charge, after ignition of the propellant, a maximum gas pressure level of always the same magnitude independently from an initial propellant temperature, and to obtain, for the third partial charge, a conversion such as to prolong the maximum gas pressure level in a predeterminable manner.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1999Date of Patent: March 12, 2002Assignees: Rheinmetall W & M GmbH, TZN Forschungs-und Entwicklungszentrum Unterlüss GmbH, Nitrochemie Aschau GmbHInventors: Thomas Weise, Hans Karl Haak, Paul Schaffers, Peter Lange

Patent number: 6351035Abstract: The problem of stress transmission from the outside of an integrated circuit package into the interior of the semiconductor has been significantly reduced by placing a micro-spring between the external solder ball and the interior tab. The process for manufacturing such a structure begins with a fully completed integrated circuit on whose surface freestanding metal posts are formed, each post being in contact with an I/O pad. Using a leveling plate at elevated temperature, the posts are given a permanent tilt relative to the surface and are then encapsulated in an elastomer. This subprocess may then be repeated as many times as desired with the direction in which the posts lean being changed by 90 degrees at each iteration. This results in the formation of an orthogonal spiral which acts as a coil spring to absorb stress originating at the solder ball.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2000Date of Patent: February 26, 2002Assignee: M. Patent number: 6351211Abstract: A described embodiment of the invention is known as a brake strobe system (BSS) providing a state of the art visual warning system designed to prevent accidents and multi-car pileups. When a driver quickly and forcefully applies his brakes, a strobe light (which is built into the third brake light or all brake lights) is activated. The harder a driver brakes, the faster and brighter the strobe blinks, thereby warning other drivers of potential hazards. The BSS also has the ability to brighten or dim the strobe to compensate for weather and day or night driving conditions. It also has the ability to change modes or presets according to the speed of the vehicle. In the event that a car's airbag deploys, the brake strobe system will automatically activate to warn other drivers and alert emergency response personnel.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 2000Date of Patent: February 26, 2002Assignee: M&P Ventures, Inc.Inventor: W. Publication number: 20020021681Abstract: The invention relates to an improved handoff method for mobile IP in a cdma2000 network. During handoff, the A10 connection between the Target PCF and the PDSN is pre-set-up, while the MS is still connected to a MSC, when the Target PCF receives the message from the Target BSC to set up the A8 connection. Furthermore, in the case of inter-PDSN handoff, a tunnel is established between the PDSNs, over which the PPP context eventually is transferred to the Target PDSN. The Target PDSN then sends a message to the MS triggering a re-registration with the HA. The Target PDSN takes over full responsibility for the MS when it receives the Mobile IP Result from the HA, and sends a message to the Serving PDSN to let the latter know that it can release all resources related to the MS.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 9, 2001Publication date: February 21, 2002Applicant: Telefonaktiebolaget L M EricssonInventor: Lila Madour
