  • Patent number: 4173897
Abstract: An ultrasonic test system for inspection of structural material includes a test electronics for controlling a plurality of ultrasonic transmitter and receiver channels. This test electronics is operated by sequencing the system through the several channels, but the evaluating circuit is common to the receive channels. The duration of the test, timing of launching, timing of beginning receiving response signals, time and duration of looking windows for identifying and timing particular responses, and comparison data, all are operating and acquisition parameters for operating the electronics. These parameters are furnished from external sources and are programmable and exchangeable, e.g., from test to test. At least some of these parameters are updated on the basis of data as acquired during the test.

  • Patent number: 4173330
Abstract: A lifting device having a rotating female threaded member and a non-rotating axially movable lifting spindle is load releaved by means of pressurized oil pumped to oil pockets in the threads of the female member. Multiple pumps are secured to the female member and are arranged in pairs with a common drive shaft and a pinion for each pair. The pinions all mesh with the internal gear of an annulus being concentrically arranged around the member and having an external gear for independent driving. The pumps are connected to the pockets by means of ducts, there being no fluid pass across moving interfaces. The pumps have a common suction feed which dips into an annular reservoir.

  • Patent number: 4164150
Abstract: A plurality of water tanks hold a plurality of ultrasonic transducers, each providing a different angle of incidence for ultrasonic radiation for a tube or pipe passing through the tank. Water of a specific temperature is fed to the particular tank being used and in conjunction with a particularly oriented transducer, a particular test angle of refraction is established. Through a particular range of different transducer orientations in conjunction with a temperature range from about 5.degree. to 40.degree. C., a rather wide range of possible refraction angles can be established.

  • Patent number: 4162636
Abstract: An ultrasonic transducer is held in a tubular holder which in turn is axially placed in a mount. A frame depends from a cover of a gimbal mounted container for coupler fluid and the mount is clamped to the frame at an adjustable angle so that the transducer axis always intersects the same point. Ball rollers on the cover position the container in relation to a pipe to be tested so that said point is located on the pipe's surface. The transducer holder has a shoulder onto which one may seat a calibration standard.

  • Patent number: 4155725
Abstract: The dust removal plant is comprised of a fan with adjustable guide vanes and a ring gap scrubber with adjustable gap width. A first feedback loop controls the scrubber operation through gap width control for maintaining a constant residual dust content of the gas as discharged, a second feedback loop keeps the pressure constant at the scrubber intake by adjusting the guide vanes. Both feedback loops reduce the power consumption of the fan for periods of low dust development. The apparatus is explained with reference to cleaning of smoke gas discharged from a blowing steel converter.

  • Patent number: 4154628
Abstract: A method of quench hardening a gear having a gear rim, a hub, and two rim carrying gear disk includes carburizing the gear and quenching it subsequently in a saline bath, and is improved by releasably covering the perforated disks with perforated supplemental disks, the perforations are closed during carburization but open during quenching. The gear is turned about its vertically positioned axis during quenching; the supplemental disks are removed subsequently so that the gear disks are not carburized.

  • Patent number: 4154604
Abstract: Additives in the form of a wire-like object are introduced through a tube into the interior of molten metal bath. The wire in the tube is surrounded by a pressurized gas which prevents metal from entering the tube. Since the tube extends close to the bottom of the bath, the additives melt near that bottom and are distributed in the bath through convective flow.

  • Patent number: 4153283
Abstract: A box member and a pin member each have a tapered thread, an abutment end face and a shoulder for engagement respectively with shoulder and end face of the other member, one coacting surface pair being conical, the other one being planar. Shoulder and end face are spaced differently in the two members such that upon engagement of a conical shoulder and end face, planar end face and shoulder have a gap of about 0.5 to 2.5 per cent of the spacing. Taper/bulge seals are provided adjacent the abutment surfaces to be effective before the planar surfaces abut as the joint is made up. The effective pitch diameter of the pin member remains consistently smaller than the pitch diameter of the box member, at least up to an insertion of the pin member so that the planar surfaces abut.

  • Patent number: 4152917
Abstract: The pilger rolls are driven through gear segments which are reciprocated by a crank and linkage which also reciprocates the feed mechanism; that mechanism includes a carriage and a mandrel holder in a feed slide on the carriage, the mandrel holder may also reciprocate on the carriage for purposes of compensation speed differentials. The upper roll is mounted to permit lifting for venting, but the gearing remains engaged so that subsequently a new adjustment is not needed.

  • Patent number: 4148206
Abstract: A roll stand for horizontally journalled contoured rolls is constructed to have two windows, through one of these windows driving engagement is made to the rolls and through the other one two subassemblies may be inserted or removed together from the stand. Each subassembly includes a pair of mounting blocks, a shaft and a roll on the shaft. The two subassemblies are axially locked together and/or independently to the stand, while one rests on the other or is suspended from adjustment spindles. The two subassemblies are removed from the stand together by a lifting fork, requiring only that the connection to the stand be released but leaving the two subassemblies interconnected.
