Patent number: 4401071Abstract: The invention sets forth a method and apparatus for improving the injection and mixture of fuel and air in air-compressing combustion engines. The fuel is admitted into a rotationally symmetrical combustion chamber in such a manner that all droplets of the fuel stream are finely atomized at all speed and/or load ranges of the engine, and that the complete spray on entering the combustion chamber is so broken up that, from the combustion chamber wall to a point approximately one third of the combustion chamber radius, the broken-up spray matches the combustion chamber geometry, the injection of the fuel being effected in such a manner as to match the velocity and/or density distribution of the combustion air which rotates in the combustion chamber.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1981Date of Patent: August 30, 1983Assignee: M.A.N. Patent number: 4376540Abstract: A gas seal for a rotatable shaft of a housing which comprises, a first rotatable dimensionally stable seal ring connected to the shaft. A diaphragm is connected to the housing which exerts an axial bias on a second rotatable seal ring. The bias of the diaphragm provides a gap space between the rotatable and fixed seal ring which is supplied with a sealing gas. The material of the fixed ring is different from that of the diaphragm. A compensating ring is connected unilaterally to the fixed ring and of a material at least partly the same as the fixed ring. A slide seat is defined between the compensating ring and the fixed ring to permit axial movement of at least a part of the compensating ring. This part is connected in turn to the diaphragm so that stress free transmission of axial thrust is provided between the seal ring and the diaphragm.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1981Date of Patent: March 15, 1983Assignee: M.A.N. Method of and apparatus for starting an air-compressing four-stroke cycle internal combustion engine
Patent number: 4353334Abstract: A method of and apparatus for starting an air-compressing four-stroke cycle internal combustion engine, in which the air for the combustion process is preheated in the intake system or in chambers communicating with the intake system. The air conveying engine parts are, prior to the self-sustaining operation of the engine, heated by means of the preheated intake air, while the engine during the preheating operation is driven by means of separate power and the inlet and outlet valves are controlled in conformity with the two-stroke cycle so that each upward stroke of a piston provides an exhaust stroke and every downward stroke of a piston provides an intake stroke. The shift-over of the operation of the inlet and outlet valves from two-stroke cycle operation to four-stroke cycle operation and the admission of fuel into the cylinders are effected only when the air conveying engine parts and the air charge have reached a temperature sufficient for the start of the engine.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1980Date of Patent: October 12, 1982Assignee: Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nurnberg AktiengesellschaftInventor: Alfred Neitz -

Patent number: 4327551Abstract: The temperature of the working gas in the heating chamber of each of a number of cylinders is continuously measured. An electronic selection circuit selects the lowest measured temperature as a control parameter by which the speed of a blower in the common air supply is controlled for providing an air flow proportional to blower speed. A pressure-detecting device measures the air flow through a pressure converter provides an electrical signal that normally controls the valves of the respective fuel supplies for the combustion chambers of the cylinders, but a monitoring device for each cylinder compares the measured working gas temperature with a pre-set maximum value so that when the maximum value is exceeded, the fuel supply valve is changed over to control by the output of the monitoring device, to reduce the fuel supply until the maximum temperature is no longer exceeded in that cylinder.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 1980Date of Patent: May 4, 1982Assignee: M.A.N.
