  • Patent number: 4177005
Abstract: The inner spiral wall of each spiral feed duct of a turbine is provided with a slidable extension tongue with an end portion of spiral curvature mounted on a carrier plate for rotation about the machine axis. Movement of the tongue to extend the length of the inner duct wall reduces the exit cross-section of the duct while keeping a spiral shape at the duct end. The tongue may be mounted on a portion of the machine casing that is made integral with the discharge duct that is coaxial with the machine and is mounted axially rotatable on the machine casing. When an axial flow rotor is used, the ducts and tongues have deflecting rims and the tongues have end walls at the rim ends to define the zone of communication between the rotor and each duct. One of the applications of the invention is to exhaust gas driven superchargers for internal combustion engines. A discharge spiral for a rotary pump or compressor may be similarly equipped.

  • Patent number: 4173933
Abstract: A bogie with a torsion-soft corner-stiff frame for high speed rail vehicles with a wear-resistant means interconnecting the central areas of the longitudinal beams of the bogie together with one wear-resistant means each interconnecting the longitudinal beam ends. Of the wear-resistant means, that means which is located within the region of the vertical transverse plane is designed as an intermediate joint permitting movements solely about the y-axis, whereas the wear-resistant means at the ends form components of horizontal spring leaves which form head pieces of the bogie. The ends of said spring leaves are in a corner-stiff manner connected to stiff corner pieces arranged at the ends of the longitudinal beams.

  • Patent number: 4170945
Abstract: A bogie arrangement for self-propelled high-speed rail vehicles with at least two driving bogies supporting the vehicle body. Each of the driving bogies is powered by at least one electric motor and supports the vehicle body by a spring system while having a common pivot point with the vehicle body. The rotor of the fully spring-cushioned and transversely extending motor is operatively connected to the driving wheel set through the intervention of a transmission and a cardan quill shaft having elastic articulated bearings. The motor is held in the space between the wheel set axle and the vertical central transverse plane of the bogie transversely swingably on the understructure of the vehicle body. The longitudinally acting forces of the motor are transmitted by at least one link of considerable length from the housing of the motor to the adjacent frame section of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4168182
Abstract: A shaped metal base component is formed, such as by casting or forging. The component is then thinly coated with a material, such as a ceramic material, having a higher melting point than the material of the shaped component. The coated component is then heated under zero gravity conditions up to a temperature which is below the melting point of the coating, but which is high enough to soften the component, the coating maintaining the shape of the component during the heating step. After completion of the heating step, the coated component is cooled under zero gravity conditions. The forming and coating of the component take place on earth, and the steps of heating and cooling the coated component are performed in space. After cooling the coated component, the coating is either stripped off the component or left on the component to form an integral part of the shaped body.

  • Patent number: 4156188
Abstract: A method and apparatus test the characteristics of rotors for hysteresis motors. A rotor to be tested is placed in predetermined spaced relation adjacent a testing stator having a stator winding. Predetermined voltage at predetermined frequency is applied to the testing stator winding while the rotor is maintained at standstill. Preferably, such voltage and frequency are the rated voltage and frequency of the motor into which it is intended that the rotor being tested will be assembled. The current thereby produced in the stator winding is measured, and the measured current is compared with a predetermined reference. The reference is preferably the current measured in the testing stator winding under the same conditions using a reference rotor that has been tested in a running motor.

Abstract: In order to provide a controlled turbulence or angular momentum of air, air and fuel mixtures or similar fluids to be injected into the cylinder chamber of valve controlled internal combustion engines, control vanes are provided in close proximity to the valve retaining ring. The vanes deflect the flow of the air or air/fuel mixture without restricting the flow thus increasing the fuel flow coefficient. The vanes are curved to accommodate the fluid in-flow while ensuring controlled turbulence or angular momentum of the fluid in the cylinder chamber. The vanes can be arranged on a ring which is fastened in the inlet chamber in close proximity to the valve retaining ring.
