    Abstract: Tetrakis [3-(3,5-dibutyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionyloxymethyl] methane having a high purity and excellent whiteness is prepared. In this process, an ester exchange reaction between a propionic acid ester having the general formula: ##STR1## wherein Bu is an n-, sec-, iso-, or tert-butyl group and R.sup.1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and pentaerythritol in the presence of an alkaline catalyst is effected by adding 0.2 through 1.8 mol of water based on 1 mol of the alkaline catalyst by the substantial completion of the ester exchange reaction.

    Abstract: A boring-injection device comprises a fluid supplying hollow rod, a fluid discharge portion at the lower end of the rod, and a packer element inflatable from the rod to seal a space between the rod and a borehole wall at a desired depth position. The rod is surrounded by a sheath so that the packer element and fluid discharge portion can be protruded out of and retracted within the sheath in a body. They are retracted during the boring operation and protruded during injecting or investigating operation. The device can be used for practising a method of ground improvement or a method of ground investigation.

    Abstract: Stretched articles of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene are prepared by melt-kneading a mixture of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene with a paraffinic wax having a melting point of 40.degree. to 120.degree. C. and a weight average molecular weight of at least 230 but less than 2000 in a screw extruder while maintaining the temperature of the mixture at 180.degree. to 280.degree. C. The molten mixture is melt-extruded through a die at a temperature of 180.degree. to 300.degree. C. and the resulting unstretched extrudate is cooled to solidify it. The unstretched solidified extrudate is then subjected to a stretching treatment at a temperature of 60.degree. to 140.degree. C. at a particular stretch ratio. Stretch shaped articles of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene having high tensile strength and modulus of elasticity are produced uniformly and reproducibly. The stretched shaped articles are substantially free from stretching uneveness.

Moreover, it features outstanding miscibility between the unifunctional monomer and the carbonate upon copolymerization thereof, and minimized polymerization strain.

    Abstract: A continuous process for the preparation of polymer compositions having low volatile content which comprises passing a styrene polymer-containing polymerization fluid composition obtained by solution polymerization or bulk polymerization through a volatile component separator comprising vertical foaming preheaters and vacuum vessels directly connected therewith and thereby removing volatile components continuously from the polymerization fluid composition in three stages to obtain a polymer composition having low volatile content, the process being characterized in that each of three stages includes at least one vertical foaming preheater and one vacuum vessel, the first stage is carried out under such pressure and temperature conditions that the polymerization fluid composition leaving this stage contains said styrene polymer in an amount of 60 to 80% by weight and the temperature of the polymerization fluid composition passing through this stage lies between 70.degree. and 120.degree. C.
