  • Patent number: 4654445
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for preparing 2-chloropropionaldehyde (2-CPA) by using vinyl chloride, carbon monoxide and hydrogen as raw materials. Although processes making use of cobalt catalysts have conventionally been known, it is disclosed herein that by using a rhodium compound and a nitrogen- or phosphorus-containing Lewis base in combination as a catalyst, the reaction is allowed to proceed at temperature and pressure lower than those required for such conventional processes and the selectively toward the intended product is improved. It is also disclosed that by causing water to exist in the reaction system and using a water-insoluble organic solvent, fractionating the reaction mixture into a water layer and an organic layer after the reaction and then collecting 2-CPA from the water layer through distillation, extraction or the like, the rhodium compound contained substantially in its entirety in an organic layer can be reutilized in the form of its solution.

  • Patent number: 4650951
Abstract: A method of resistance-welding two laminates each having a basic structure of a metal layer/a thermally softenable insulating layer/a metal layer, which allows welding with excellent welding strength and good outer appearance of a welded spot. In this method, two laminates are prepared in which each metal layer has a thickness of 0.02 to 0.5 mm, and a ratio of the total thickness of the metal layers of each laminate to the thickness of the laminate falls within a range between 1/3 and 2/3. Electrodes held at a temperature above the softening temperature of the insulating layers are urged against the laminates to soften the insulating layers and so bring the metal layers into contact with each other and to resistance-weld the laminates.

  • Patent number: 4639355
Abstract: The present invention provides for the recovery of gallium from aluminum smelting dust. Aluminum smelting dust is leached with mineral acid, such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, or nitric acid. Gallium is extracted from the obtained leach liquor with an organic solution containing a liquid cation exchange agent. The resulting loaded organic solution is treated with mineral acid in aqueous solution, either after or before scrubbing with a higher concentration of acid in aqueous solution, to strip gallium. Gallium is extracted from this solution with another organic solution containing an ion-pair extracting type extracting agent. Finally, purified gallium is recovered by stripping the latter loaded organic solution with water or dilute acid in aqueous solution.
