Abstract: A circuit for controlling the power transmitted from an a.c. voltage source by a switching element, particularly a triac, connected in series with a power element, e.g. with the heating element of an image fixing device in an electro(photo)graphic copier, is safeguarded against errant operation by the provision of a checking circuit which comprises means for blocking periodically the transmission of power by the switching element under its normal control and means effective in intervals of the interruption of said transmission by the blocking means for detecting whether power is then being transmitted to the power element and, if it then is, producing a corrective control signal.
Abstract: A process and apparatus for developing an electrostatic latent image on a surface of a strip-type photoconductor. A working supply of developer material, held readily available for application to the photoconductor, is carried from a holding device to the photoconductor by means of a rotatable applicator. A magnet, magnetically coupled to the applicator, brings the developer material on the applicator into sufficient contact with the photoconductor to cause the developer material to brush the image bearing surface of the photoconductor, thereby developing the latent image on the same. The developer material is collected before being returned to the working supply, and fed to the middle of the working supply to facilitate mixture and blending therewith.

Abstract: Polyethylene having an average molecular weight of at least 1,500, a crystallinity of at least 75% and a density of at least 0.93 has been found advantageous as a base material for making pressure-fixable toner powder for developing electrostatic images. The toner powder can be fixed satisfactorily to image substrates by the pressure of fixing rollers of conventional electrophotographic copying apparatus, yet it can be produced readily by grinding a suitable composition based on the polyethylene. The polyethylene preferably has an average weight of between 2,000 and 10,000, a crystallinity of at least 80% and a density of at least 0.94. Especially advantageous pressure-fixable, electrically conductive toner powders are obtained from pigmented masses of the polyethylene in which 3 to 20% of the weight consists of carbon black having a specific surface of at least 750 m.sup.2 /g, preferably of about 1,000 m.sup.2 /g, and an oil absorption of between 250 and 400 ml/g.
Abstract: A photographic material is described for making positive images by reversal processing, the material comprising a support and a silver halide Lippmann-emulsion layer the average silver halide grain-size of which is less than 100 nm wherein the grains have been chemically sensitized to fog so that a test portion of the emulsion when coated on a support at a coverage of silver halide corresponding to from about 3 g to about 7 g of silver nitrate per sq.m. gives a density between about 0.20 and about 0.70 upon development without exposure for 6 min at 20.degree. Abstract: In electrographic copying apparatus of the type in which a powder image is transferred from a moving surface to a surface moving in pressing contact with it and then is transferred from the latter surface to a sheet of copy paper, pollution of the transfer station by powder is avoided by providing one of the two surfaces with at least one receding surface portion which recedes away from the other surface so as not to make contact with it, and causing a receding surface portion to be positioned opposite to the other surface so that the two surfaces are not in contact when no image transfer is being effected, such, for instance, as when powder images are not being formed or when a copy sheet is not being supplied so as to receive an image formed.
Abstract: This is a method and apparatus for performing such method to provide protection to police officers during the interviewing of witnesses and the investigation of matters, such protection being concerned with protection against false charges of police brutality and the like, and from unexpected attack in which a police officer causes his interrogation to be transmitted to a receiver and recording device located within the police vehicle and in which on emergency occurrences a special signal is transmitted which "locks" into the police vehicle broadcasting system for transmission to police headquarters. This method and apparatus features the use of VHF communications to provide a permanent record of all verbal communications between the police officer and others during investigations.
Abstract: Side shift backhoe clamped by two vertical acting and one horizontal clamp. Restrictors allow operation of vertical clamps prior to horizontal to prevent loading of slide rail. Vertical clamp actuators are secured in casting by L-shaped slots which allow actuator to be secured without bolts and allow vertical movement of actuators. Hook on casting takes longitudinal loads and resolves them partially to vertical loads.
Abstract: A method of rendering a cable having a core consisting of a plurality of conductors longitudinally watertight. A silicone rubber which vulcanizes upon exposure to moisture is used between the conductors either throughout the entire length or in blocks.

Abstract: A body supporting furniture frame having two opposite longitudinal girders and a plurality of mutually parallel cross-girders disposed therebetween, wherein at least the edges of the cross-girders are provided with a lengthwise aperture in which a wire or bar is loosely inserted and the wires or bars are bent convexly upward in the longitudinal direction, and wherein the cross-section of each lengthwise aperture and the cross-section of the corresponding wire or bar are specially designed so that the wire or bar is blocked in the lengthwise aperture against rotation through an angle exceeding 90.degree..
Abstract: The invention relates to the combination of a container and a cap for closing that container, the container having a mouth, the upper surface of which defining a practically flat plane, and being provided with an upstanding rim extending along the entire perifery, the cap having an upper panel and a sealing channel filled with sealant surrounding this panel, the inner diameter of said channel being smaller than the inner diameter of the rim and larger than the inner diameter of the upper surface of the mouth of the container, while the depth of the sealing channel is in excess of the height of the rim over said upper surface of the mouth.
Abstract: This invention relates to high carbon steel wire or cord suitable for use as a reinforcement for vehicle tires. By "high carbon steel" is meant here a steel of at least 0.2% C.
Abstract: A method for detecting contamination of a liquid, particularly a Quench Oil, comprises introducing a sensing element at a high temperature into a liquid, allowing the sensing element to commence cooling, and thereafter timing the cooling of the sensing element between two selected temperatures. The time thus measured is compared with a pre-set time, to provide an indication of contamination of the liquid. In apparatus for carrying out the method, a slug of stainless steel in which is embedded a thermo couple is heated in a furnace and then lowered into a receptacle containing the liquid under test. These operations, and the timing and comparison, are effected in a pre-determined automatic cycle.
Abstract: A power-assisted manually operated golf bag carrying cart is disclosed. The cart features a foldable tricycle support frame having parallel drive wheels, which can be maintained in parallel over a range of adjustment, and independently-powered direct drive d.c. motors coupled to shock isolated wheels. A control scheme is described wherein a hand grip with a mechanically isolated continuously variable throttle provides control signals to a power-control circuit providing independent direct drive to each of the drive wheels. Power supplied by variable pulse width pulse train developing intermittent high peak torque yet low average torque in the normal duty cycle range drives the d.c. motors. The motor drive scheme provides an electrical limited slip differential which permits easy turning without undesirable power dissipation.
Abstract: A composite stopper comprises a body of resilient plastics material and a head surmounting the body. The head has a skirt extending around the body and a sleeve which is force fitted into a blind recess in the body. The fit of the sleeve causes the adjacent body portion to expand into engagement with the inner surface of the skirt.
