  • Patent number: 6732327
Abstract: An iterative Turbo decoder in which soft bits of a received signal are repetitively subjected to the process of decoding by a first decoder associated with a first encoder in the transmitter, interleaving by an interleaver associated with an interleaver in the transmitter, decoding by a second decoder associated with a second encoder in the transmitter, and deinterleaving by a deinterleaver associated with the interleaver in the transmitter. The improvement is to scale the signal after each decoding by a predetermined value in the vicinity of 0.7 to 0.8. At a signal Eb/No in the vicinity of 1.0 db., an improvement of about 0.2 db. in coding gain is attained while very little complexity is added. Decoders may be according to the max Log MAP algorithm instead of the more complex Log MAP algorithm with only slight degradation of performance.

  • Patent number: 6728208
Abstract: In a mobile communications system (BSS, SGSN, GGSN) having a packet data transmission capability, a dynamic packet-based quality of service (QoS) mechanism is provided within a “transmission tunnel” defined by a more static packet data protocol context (PDP context). More particularly, each data packet is arranged to carry at least one QoS parameter, and the scheduling and the policing of the transmission of the data packets is made in packet by packet basis according to this QoS information in the packets, while, however, within the limits set by the PDP context. This concept enables to have any number of QoS profiles in use simultaneously, e.g. a dedicated QoS profile for each of several Internet user applications run in the mobile station (MS) for a IP address. Therefore, the present invention provides support for various Internet applications and their QoS requirements.

  • Patent number: 6721304
Abstract: A channel configuration of a digital mobile communications system comprises two or more lower-rate transmission channels for each high-speed radio interface traffic channel between a base station and an interworking function. Radio frames, such as EDGE frames, are transmitted over a radio interface traffic channel. Transmission frames, such as TRAU frames, are transmitted on a transmission channels. The base station and the interworking function provide the transmission frames to be transmitted with frame and/or channel numbering which indicates the order of the transmitted frames and/or the transmission channel via which the transmission frame was transmitted. According to the invention, the base station does not restore the order of the downlink transmission frames on the basis of said frame and/or channel numbering but it places the data of the transmission frames and at least the frame and/or channel numbering in the payload of the downlink radio frame to be transmitted.

  • Patent number: 6718169
Abstract: A method for determining a confidence limit for a telecommunication network element, whereby the number of data transmission connections established through the network element is stored into a database and a relative value as a ratio of the number of faulty operations in the network element to the number of data transmission connections is determined. A variable describing the relative number of faulty operations is assigned a target value for which a confidence limit is set, the deviation of the confidence limit from the target value changing in proportion to the number of the data transmission connections. The deviation of the confidence limit in relation to the target value becomes either smaller, in response to an increase in the number of data transmission connections, or larger, in response to a decrease in the number of data transmission connections. The confidence limits of the telecommunication network element can be updated automatically.

  • Patent number: 6714609
Abstract: The invention relates to a reception method and a receiver for a TDMA radio system, in which received signals include a desired signal and one or more interference signals, which desired signal and interference signal include a predetermined sequence, by which the signals can be separated from each other. The receiver searches for the most interfering interference signal and forms a signal estimate of the desired signal using the predetermined sequence of the desired signal. The receiver then forms the first residual signal, which describes the difference between the signal estimates of the received signal and the desired signal; the receiver then forms the second residual signal, which describes the difference between the received signal and the co-channel signal estimate. The receiver compares the first residual signal with the second residual signal and based on the comparison, selects either single detection or joint detection to detect the received signal.

  • Patent number: 6694141
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of channel allocation in a fixed radio link network. For each radio link to be commissioned channels, interference level measurement on each available channel of the frequency band is carried out. Based on the interference measurements, best transmission and reception channel for the link are selected. Thereafter, the radio link can be commissioned and measurements in the next radio link to be commissioned can be started. Instead of using a fixed and pre-set channel for the fixed radio link, a channel is assigned autonomously and automatically when commissioning the link, depending on interference measurement results and/or distance measurement results. The possibility for automatic channel selection decreases the amount of commissioning work by removing the need for detailed frequency planning and fixed channel setting at the factory for each radio.

  • Patent number: 6680955
Abstract: A timer based header compression/decompression technique and timer and reference based technique are provided. A source generates a header field, such as an RTP time stamp. A packet including the header field is sent to a compressor which calculates a compressed header field based on the header field of the packet from the source and a jitter quantity. The compressed header field is calculated by calculating a jitter effect the network before the compressor has on the transmission of packets and calculating a jitter effect the network between the compressor and a decompressor has on the transmission of packets. The packet including the compressed header field is transmitted to a decompressor which includes a local timer. The decompressor decompresses the compressed header field by calculating an approximation of the header field based on the elapsed time since the arrival of a previous packet and the field value in the previous packet.

  • Patent number: 6678527
Abstract: One common traffic channel is allocated to a multiservice call which requires simultaneous transmission of two or more different information flows apart from one another. This common traffic channel is divided into a transparent and a non-transparent sub-channel. The transmitting end is provided with a multiplexer (73) which multiplexes the different information flows (75, 76) to the common traffic channel. The receiving end is provided with a demultiplexer (74) which demultiplexes the signal received from the common traffic channel back into separate information flows (75, 76). The transparent sub-channel is used for transmitting time-critical information, such as video and audio, which does not allow the use of an error correction protocol based on retransmission, and the non-transparent sub-channel can be used for transmitting less time-critical information, such as data files, which allows the use of error correction based on retransmission.

  • Patent number: 6678531
Abstract: According to the invention, time is divided into power correction intervals. A target power or a target energy per bit and correction step limits are determined for each base station. The parameters are signalled to the base stations. Each base station subsequently executes a power correction algorithm. Each base station compares the used transmission power or energy per bit to said target power or said target energy per bit, respectively. The result of the comparison is further divided by a predetermined number of power correction steps within said power correction interval, the number preferably equals with the number of repetitions of downlink power control commands within said power correction interval, to provide a power correction step. The power correction is then executed in combination with the downlink closed loop power control.

  • Publication number: 20030235390
Abstract: A system for recording a video session includes a video server and a client coupled to the video server using a communication path. The video server communicates a start record command. The client determines the processing capacity of the client and establishes a recording interval in response to the determined processing capacity. The recording interval indicates a time between a first recording time and a second recording time. The client records a first video frame at the first recording time in response to the start record command, and records a second video frame at the second recording time. The first video frame includes first video data and the second video frame includes second video data. The client generates a video sub-frame comprising the second video data that is different from the first video data.

  • Patent number: 6661887
Abstract: A database is formed for providing two intelligent network services in connection with the same call, the database comprising data on the mutual compatibility of the different intelligent network services. In connection with each such call which involves at least one first intelligent network services and one second intelligent network service, an exchange receives the data on the first intelligent network services. If this data is sufficient for arming detection points, the exchange arms the detection points from which the first intelligent network services will be activated if the activation criteria are met during the call. The exchange also determines the data for arming a second detection point from which the second intelligent network service will be activated if the activation criteria are met during the call.

  • Patent number: 6658025
Abstract: A method and equipment for providing frequency synchronization in a telecommunications system, wherein time stamps providing timing information are transferred over a packet-switched network from a transmitter network element to a receiver network element having a receiver oscillator. The expected times for reception of time stamps are estimated (i), deviations from the estimated expected time for the time stamps are calculated (ii) and at least one time stamp deviating most from the estimated expected time is removed (iii). The steps (i)-(iii) are repeated until a pre-determined number of time stamps is removed. Frequency of the receiver oscillator is then estimated using the remaining time stamps and the frequency generation of the receiver oscillator is adjusted based on the estimated frequency.
