Abstract: Improvements in the direct chill casting of copper base alloys such as the tin brasses, tin bronzes and those alloys which exhibit a liquidus-solidus temperature separation of at least 50.degree. C. is brought about by utilizing boron nitride particles in the dressing material for the mold walls. These boron nitride particles may also be added to normally used molten metal covering material and utilized as a cover for said alloys in the casting process. The most effective results in casting are obtained when using the boron nitride particles in mold dressing form in conjunction with molten cover form.

Abstract: An improvement in the generation of foam from a mixture of foam-forming material in a structure having a preferred configuration. Conveying means are used to convey the structure along a horizontal path. A plurality of foam gun heads are mounted in spaced relationship to each other over and transverse to said horizontal path. Each foam gun head includes a foam dispensing outlet and valve means for controlling the discharges of the foam-forming materials therefrom. First, sensing means are provided upstream of the foam dispensing outlets for sensing the passage of the structure thereby. A plurality of second sensing means are positioned upstream of the foam dispensing outlets in spaced relationship to each other in a direction transverse to the horizontal path, each one of the second sensing means being associated with one foam gun head for sensing the presence of the structure in a vertical direction.

Abstract: A novel composition is described which is an aqueous oxidizing solution containing: (a) about 0.01 to about 10% by weight of an oxidant selected from the water-soluble iodate salts and the water-soluble bromate salts; (b) about 0.005% to about 5% by weight of a water-soluble vanadate salt; and (c) about 0.05 to about 10% of a water-soluble nitrate salt. An improved process for oxidizing vat or sulfur dyes is also described wherein the reduced form of the dye is oxidized by contact with the novel composition.
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for adjusting the space between an adjustable anode and a cathode in an electrolytic cell wherein current measurements and voltage measurements are obtained for conductors to the anode sets and compared with predetermined standards for the same conductors and anode sets. Measurement of deviation from the predetermined standards are used to determine the direction of anode adjustment. A digital computer operably connected to motor drive means adapted to raise or lower anode sets upon appropriate electric signals from the computer is a preferred embodiment of this invention.
Abstract: Graft copolymers are prepared by the polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, or a mixture of such monomers, in the presence of a peroxy di-ester polyol. Presence of the peroxy group in the polyol reactant itself serves as a free radical initiator site for the graft copolymerization reaction. The copolymers formed are utilized in the formulation of polyurethane compositions.

Abstract: A pole extension device for use with a powder-actuated tool. A cam-equipped handle is twistably mounted on the end of a hollow elongate body. An inelastic cable is disposed within the body engaging the tool firing mechanism and attached to a pin riding on the cam, such that twisting of the handle, relative to the body, results in discharge of the tool.

Abstract: A membrane cell for the electrolysis of aqueous salt solutions is provided in which the foraminous metal anode is enclosed in the membrane. Spacing means are provided to separate the portions coated with an electrocatalytically active material from the membrane. The spacing means may be a nonconducting material or the coated surface of the anode may be faced away from the membrane to permit the anode structure to serve as the spacing means. To provide a low cell voltage and permit efficient hydrogen gas release from the caustic solution, the cathode is spaced apart from the membrane.

Abstract: An assembly for fastening an insulation batt to a supporting surface. The fastening assembly includes an elongated fastener which is driven into the supporting surface with the head end of the fastener protruding from the supporting surface a distance approximately equal to the thickness of the batt of insulation. The batt is then impaled upon the protruding fastener and pushed down thereon until the head of the fastener protrudes from the surface of the batt remote from the supporting surface. A planar locking clip having a keyhole-shaped opening is then slipped over the fastener head and wedged between the fastener head and the batt. The locking clip is held in place by engagement with the fastener head, and prevents the insulation batt from pulling away from the supporting surface.
Abstract: Decomposition of chloroisocyanurates such as trichloroisocyanuric acid or alkali metal dichloroisocyanurates is inhibited by the presence of alkaline earth metal sulfates. The sulfates may be used in compositions with a solid chloroisocyanurate or they may be added separately, for example, to packages containing the chloroisocyanurate.

Abstract: Glass or ceramic-to-metal composites or seals wherein the glass or ceramic is bonded to an iron base alloy consisting essentially of from 1-5% silicon and from 1-10% chromium, remainder iron. The alloy develops a thermal oxide film which consists essentially of chromium oxide and .alpha.Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 which may comprise from 10 to 100% of the oxide film thickness on the metal. The invention also includes a process of bonding the glass or ceramic to the metal which eliminates the need of a prolonged heat treatment performed in a special atmosphere.
Abstract: Mercury and caustic values are recovered from caustic sludges in a process which comprises intermixing the caustic sludge with a liquid under pressure or agitation to produce a caustic slurry which is separated into a caustic liquor, metallic mercury and a remaining sludge which is suitable for roasting in a retort to recover better than 99 percent of the mercury in the sludge. The process recovers valuable mercury and caustic materials and eliminates pollution of natural resources which was formerly caused when these sludges were disposed of in landfill operations. In addition, the process reduces potential hazards to personnel handling the caustic sludges and requires no addition of chemicals which produce undesirable by-products and add to the cost of the recovery process.
Abstract: A propellant charge comprising a matrix of granular propellant having interspersed therethrough compacted molded bodies of propellant. The density of the granular propellant is less than the density of the molded propellant bodies. The use of the mixed propellant charge enables a cartridge case of given dimensions to be loaded with a greater weight of propellant thereby enabling the achievement of greater projectile velocities in any given gun-ammunition system.
