Abstract: Electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solutions to produce chlorine and alkali metal hydroxides is accomplished in a cell comprising an anode compartment, a cathode compartment, a cation permeable divider separating the anode compartment from the cathode compartment, where the anode compartment contains an anode separator. The anode separator is comprised of a porous plate of a valve metal having an electrochemically active coating on the face, and an electrochemically non-active barrier layer on the back and a portion of the interior. The anode separator is positioned in the anode compartment so that the back of the anode separator is spaced apart from the cation permeable divider. An alkaline brine zone is formed between the anode separator and the cation permeable divider which increases the service life of the cation permeable divider.
Abstract: A method for leak-testing synthetic separators for interleaved planar electrodes is described. The method includes installing the separator such as a diaphragm or membrane about the electrodes to create an enclosed chamber within the separator, supporting the electrodes from a supportive cell housing, pressurizing the created chamber to a predetermined pressure with a gas, slowly filling the housing with a liquid to a level above the separator and observing the separator during the filling operation to determine if leaks are present in the separator.

Abstract: An improvement is disclosed in the preparation of pentachloronitrobenzene by the reaction of pentachlorobenzene with mixed nitration acid. The improvement, which is aimed at reducing undesirable impurities in the product, includes the use of a selected process step, wherein excess, unreacted nitric acid is reacted with HCl.
Abstract: A process for recovering chlorine values from an aqueous solution of a chloroisocyanuric acid compound is disclosed. After reacting a mineral acid with the aqueous solution to form an acidified reaction mixture containing dissolved chlorine, the reaction mixture is fed to a stripping column which employs an inert gas to remove the dissolved chlorine. The stripping column is maintained to provide a continuous liquid phase and a non-continuous gas phase. Chlorine gas is readily recovered in a vessel such as a scrubber. Cyanuric acid may be subsequently recovered from the chlorine-depleted solution.

Abstract: An improvement in the manufacture of flexible densified polyurethane foam wherein the partially cured freely risen foam is fed through a crush conveyor to minimize the density gradient throughout the vertical cross section. The crush conveyor includes an upper crushing section which is arcuate and has a radius of a dimension such that the ratio of the radius of the arc to height of the partially cured freely risen foam is 1.1 to 1 or greater. The crush conveyor has a bottom crushing section which may be arcurate with a radius of a dimension such that the ratio of its radius to the height of the partially cured freely risen foam is also 1.1 to 1 or greater. The radius of the bottom arcuate crushing section may be the same or larger than the radius of the top arc. As an alternative, the bottom crushing section may be planar and may be horizontal, or inclined with respect to the horizontal.
Abstract: An extrudable ammunition priming mix with viscosity characteristics which remain relatively stable over an extended time span. The stabilized viscosity is obtained by incorporating an effective amount of guar gum into the priming mix. The primer thus displays improved pot life so that larger batches may be made and used over an extended period of time.
Abstract: An electrode is described which is comprised of an electroconductive substrate having an exterior surface of perovskite of the empirical formulaA A' B O.sub.3 (I)a. wherein A is lanthanum,B. wherein A' is an alkaline earth metal selected from the group consisting of calcium, strontium, barium, and mixtures thereof,C. wherein B is a transition metal selected from the group consisting of cobalt, chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, manganese, iron, nickel, rhenium, uranium, and mixtures thereof,D. wherein the atomic ratio of A:A' is in the range from about 0.05:1 to about 0.95:1,E. wherein the valence of A + A' + B = 6,f. wherein said electrode has a resistivity preferably less than about 10 milliohm-centimeters.sup.-1, andG. wherein said perovskite is substantially insoluble in the electrolyte contacting said electrode under typical conditions of electrolysis.
Abstract: Methods are described wherein a functional fluid is used as a medium for the transmission of pressure or heat. The functional fluid used is a composition containing an effective amount of an alkoxysilane multiple cluster compound.
Abstract: 1. In the process for preparing a rocket motor, the improvement which comprises applying a layer of an uncured organic material capable of being cured to a rubbery material, to the interior combustion chamber wall of a rocket vessel, partially embedding powder grains in the exposed surface of said uncured material before solidification, thereafter curing and solidifying said uncured material, whereby a rubber-base liner is formed having one surface firmly adhering to said wall and said powder grains firmly adhering to the exposed surfaces of said liner, with a portion of each powder grain protruding from said liner, filling the lined portion of the chamber with a thermoplastic propellant charge, and solidifying said propellant charge, whereby a firmly adhering bond is formed between the solidified propellant charge, the powder grains and the solidified liner.
Abstract: A safety device, for a powder-actuated tool, which prevents the tool from discharging as the result of accidental impact or dropping. A moveable blocking member retains the hammer in the cocked position, despite disengagement of the sear, until displaced to an inoperative position by manipulation of the trigger.
Abstract: A copper-zinc brass alloy is disclosed which exhibits enhanced grain growth characteristics when modified with from 0.02 to 0.80 percent by weight arsenic.
Abstract: An improvement in the generation of foam from a mixture of foam-forming material in a structure having a preferred configuration. Conveying means are used to convey the structure along a horizontal path. A plurality of foam gun heads are mounted in spaced relationship to each other over and transverse to said horizontal path. Each foam gun head includes a foam dispensing outlet and valve means for controlling the discharges of the foam-forming materials therefrom. First, sensing means are provided upstream of the foam dispensing outlets for sensing the passage of the structure thereby. A plurality of second sensing means are positioned upstream of the foam dispensing outlets in spaced relationship to each other in a direction transverse to the horizontal path, each one of the second sensing means being associated with one foam gun head for sensing the presence of the structure in a vertical direction.

Abstract: Flexible polyurethane elastomers suitable for use as automotive exterior body parts are disclosed. The elastomers which are produced from select polymeric diols having a polyoxypropylene block capped with a random poly (oxyethylene-oxypropylene) structure, feature enhanced paint adhesion properties.
Abstract: A nail-like fastener having a substantially rectangular washer adapted to permit overlapping vertical stacking of a number of fastener/washer assemblies for use in a fastener driving apparatus of the type including a piston. The washers each include two substantially U-shaped recesses or cut-outs disposed one each near the midpoints of the top and bottom washer edges, such that the bottom fastener of a stack may be fired from the driving apparatus without disruption of the remainder of the stack.
Abstract: A magazine for holding a plurality of power loads for use in operating a power-actuated tool. The magazine includes a tube formed with a polygonal outer wall and is axially elongated. The inner part of the tube is formed with a plurality of separate open-ended channels in each of which a stack of power loads is disposed. Removable caps close each end of the magazine. The lower cap has a feed passage which, by rotation of the tube, can be aligned with each of the internal channels so as to allow discharge therefrom by gravity of the stack of loads disposed in the aligned channel. The feed passage can also be aligned with each of the radial webs between adjacent channels so that the magazine can be carried about free of the tool without danger that the loads can accidentally fall out of the channels. Rotation of the tube is keyed by the polygonal form of the outer wall of the tube.
