Patents Assigned to Owens Illinois Closure, Inc.
  • Patent number: 6053344
Abstract: A tamper-indicating closure of integrally molded plastic construction that includes a base wall having a peripheral skirt with internal threads for engaging external threads on the finish of a container. A tamper-indicating band is connected to the lower or free edge of the skirt by a plurality of circumferentially spaced integral bridges. At least one of the bridges has a greater circumferential dimension than other of the bridges. A thin integral membrane is disposed in the band immediately circumferentially adjacent to the one bridge, and extends both axially and circumferentially of the band. A stop flange is positioned on the band for engaging a bead on a container to inhibit removal of the closure, such that the membrane and the other bridges rupture upon removal of the closure but the band remains connected to the closure by the one bridge of enlarged circumferential dimension.

  • Patent number: 6053371
Abstract: The dispenser comprises a hollow body formed adjacent its upper end with an inward and downward annular flap. The method involves the molding of the body with the flap inclined upward. A tool is inserted into the open end of the body to fold the flap downward. In assembly, with the tool removed and the flap thus folded, the plunger moves past the flap so that the flap thereafter engages a shoulder on the plunger and forms an obstacle to the subsequent removal, accidental or otherwise, of the plunger.

  • Patent number: 6047712
Abstract: A dental floss dispenser is disclosed, which is adapted for mounting onto a pump toothpaste dispenser. The dental floss dispenser has a one-piece housing of integrally molded plastic construction which has a peripheral contour to match the predetermined bottom configuration of the toothpaste dispenser. The housing has a base with a peripheral wall having a recessed ledge and slot in the peripheral wall to dispense the floss. The dental floss spool is rotatably mounted on one of two bosses in the housing. The housing also has a hinged door which matches the predetermined bottom configuration of the toothpaste dispenser which is capable of movement away and against the peripheral base wall to expose the slot through which the floss is dispensed. A cutter is mounted on the hinged door allowing the severing of a desired length of floss pulled from the spool through the slot.

  • Patent number: 6039198
Abstract: A cut and pierce closure molded from a rigid plastic material for a container whose open mouth is normally sealed by a thin membrane applied to a rim of the container. The closure is removably applied to the container in a closing orientation by interengaging helical threads on the exterior of a neck of the container and an annular skirt of the closure. To dispense the contents of the container, the closure is removed and reapplied in an inverted orientation, a flange extension of the closure skirt surrounding the rim of the container and serving to center the closure in its inverted orientation on the container. A top panel of the closure is provided with a double-ended arcuate shoulder that engages the membrane when the closure is in its inverted orientation on the container to maintain tension in the portion of the membrane in engagement with the shoulder. The arcuate shoulder also serves, in combination with the flange extension, to trap the rim of the container therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6032829
Abstract: A container-and-closure sealing system embodied in a container and closure package, and method of making the same. The container has an open mouth surrounded by a cylindrical neck wall having internal threads and an open upper edge. The closure is a cap/dispensing cup type and has a skirt with external threads for threaded receipt within the container neck wall. A circumferentially continuous flange projects outwardly from the skirt and has a conical portion for cam engaging, trapping and sealing with the open upper edge of the neck wall as the closure is threaded into this wall. The closure skirt also has a circumferentially continuous plug-type sealing surface that extends radially outwardly from the skirt between the trapping flange and closure external threads for interference sealing engagement with the neck wall, as the closure is threaded thereinto.

  • Patent number: 6032834
Abstract: A one-piece molded body and housing unit for a pump dispenser, the housing comprising a pair of spaced side walls and a top wall. A vertical tubular support and pump cylinder are both spaced from the side walls and meet the top wall. Box-like channels are formed in the side walls and support trigger pins, spacing them in from the side walls. The mold includes blades on the upper mold half which extend down through the top wall to form the upper wall of the delivery tube. Additional blades on the upper mold half extend down through the top wall to form the channels and the trigger support pins in cooperation with mold surfaces from the lower half of the mold.

  • Patent number: 6021901
Abstract: A child-resistant compact or tablet case of one-piece molded plastic construction made up of a generally flat rectangular base and a cover top interconnected by an integral "living" hinge. A pair of mating lip flanges extend one each along the front edges of the base and top, i.e., the edges remote from the hinge. Each flange has an arcuate recess, and these recesses are mutually offset from each other laterally of the case when it is closed with the flanges lying against one another. By placing a thumb in one recess, and the tip of the forefinger in the other recess, a pry-open force may be applied to thus readily open the case. Since only one recess is visible when viewing the case from the top or the bottom, this manner of opening the case is not readily apparent to an infant or young child, but is very easy for an infirm or elderly adult to comprehend and use for opening the compact case merely by finger feel.

  • Patent number: 5996847
Abstract: The assembly comprises a pair of substantially identical unitary plastic molded units, each unit having a tubular stem formed with a piston at one end and a nozzle head at the other. Each unit has a female snap-type connector facing to one side and spaced therefrom a male snap-type connector facing to the same side, the molded units being disposed side-by-side with the male snap-type connectors snappingly received into the female snap-type connectors of the respective stems.

  • Patent number: 5997684
Abstract: A method of constructing a lined closure in which a liner having a circular base, a liner membrane and a thermoplastic adhesive securing the liner membrane to the base, is press fitted into a closure having a skirt with internal threads such that the liner engages and rides over the threads and is positioned against the internal base of the closure. Heat is applied to the liner at least around the periphery of the liner so as to melt the thermoplastic adhesive and resecure the liner membrane to the liner base. In this way, the liner membrane is resecured to the liner base so as to correct any separation between the membrane and base that might have occurred as the liner was press fitted into the closure.

  • Patent number: 5989007
Abstract: A method and apparatus for compression molding plastic articles including closures which includes providing coacting sets of tools including a first set for moving a core and core sleeve into engagement with a cavity mold on a second set of tooling. An actuator is provided between the first set of tooling and a fixed upper cam. The second set of tooling includes an associated actuator supporting the cavity mold and associated with a lower fixed cam. A nitrogen cylinder in the second set of tooling provides for control of the compression molding force. In a preferred form, a plurality of sets of tooling are provided in circumferentially spaced relation on a rotating turret supported by a central column. A common manifold supplies the pressure at accurately controlled pressure to each of the nitrogen cylinders. A control system is provided for monitoring and changing the pressure.
