Patents Assigned to Owens Illinois Closure, Inc.
  • Patent number: 6250510
Abstract: The dispenser comprises a hollow body formed adjacent its upper end with an inward and downward annular flap. The method involves the molding of the body with the flap inclined upward. A tool is inserted into the open end of the body to fold the flap downward. In assembly, with the tool removed and the flap thus folded, the plunger moves past the flap so that the flap thereafter engages a shoulder on the plunger and forms an obstacle to the subsequent removal, accidental or otherwise, of the plunger.

  • Patent number: 6239712
Abstract: A closure (14) and a package (10) with the closure removably affixed to a neck of a container (12), the closure carrying an electrical element (36) for emitting an audible message or signal upon the distortion of the electrical element that results from application of a removal load to the closure. The closure is of the two-piece child resistant type having an inner closure member (18), which carries the electrical element, and the inner closure member is directly affixed to the neck of the container. The closure also has an outer closure member (20) that surrounds the inner closure member. A top panel (30) of the outer closure member has a circumferentially spaced plurality of radial ribs (28) that extend toward a top panel (34) of the inner closure member, and the top panel of the inner closure member has a like circumferential plurality of radial recesses (32) that face the top panel of the outer closure member.

  • Patent number: 6223946
Abstract: A closure for a container-and-closure sealing system embodied in a container and closure package, and method of making the same. The container has an open mouth surrounded by a cylindrical neck wall having internal threads and an open upper edge. The closure is a cap/dispensing cup type and has a skirt with external threads adapted for threaded receipt within the container neck wall. A circumferentially continuous flange projects outwardly from the skirt and has a conical portion adapted for cam engaging, trapping and sealing with the open upper edge of the neck wall as the closure is threaded into this wall. The closure skirt also has a circumferentially continuous plug-type sealing surface that extends radially outwardly from the skirt between the trapping flange and closure external threads adapted for interference sealing engagement with the neck wall as the closure is threaded thereinto.

  • Patent number: 6224802
Abstract: A tamper-indicating closure of integrally molded plastic construction that includes a base wall having a peripheral skirt with internal threads for engaging external threads on the finish of a container. A tamper-indicating band is connected to the lower or free edge of the skirt by a plurality of circumferentially spaced integral bridges. At least one of the bridges has a greater circumferential dimension than other of the bridges. A thin integral membrane is disposed in the band immediately circumferentially adjacent to the one bridge, and extends both axially and circumferentially of the band. A stop flange is positioned on the band for engaging a bead on a container to inhibit removal of the closure, such that the membrane and the other bridges rupture upon removal of the closure but the band remains connected to the closure by the one bridge of enlarged circumferential dimension.

  • Patent number: 6209762
Abstract: A container assembly that includes a container having a body with a cylindrical neck and an integral lug projecting radially inwardly from the neck. A fitment has a cylindrical wall adapted to be received within the container neck. The fitment wall has internal threads for receiving a container cap, and an axial slot adapted to be received by snap fit over the lug in the container neck. The neck lug thus cooperates with the slot in the fitment wall for both retaining the fitment axially within the neck, and preventing circumferential rotation of the fitment within the neck. The fitment and cap are provided to a packager as a subassembly separate from the container. The container is rapidly filled with product through the relatively large opening in the container neck, and the cap/fitment subassembly is then snapped into the container neck to complete the package assembly.

  • Patent number: 6182845
Abstract: A cut and pierce closure molded from a rigid plastic material for a container whose open mouth is normally sealed by a thin membrane applied to a rim of the container. The closure is removably applied to the container in a closing orientation by interengaging helical threads on the exterior of a neck of the container and an annular skirt of the closure. To dispense the contents of the container, the closure is removed and reapplied in an inverted orientation, a flange extension of the closure skirt surrounding the rim of the container and serving to center the closure in its inverted orientation on the container. A top panel of the closure is provided with a double-ended arcuate shoulder that engages the membrane when the closure is in its inverted orientation on the container to maintain tension in the portion of the membrane in engagement with the shoulder. The arcuate shoulder also serves, in combination with the flange extension, to trap the rim of the container therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6173863
Abstract: The dispenser comprises a plunger operating in a hollow body. The body has formed adjacent its upper end an inward and downward annular flap. Below the flap is a vent hole. The plunger stem has a tapered zone leading to a greater diameter above the tapered zone. When the plunger is in its lockdown position, the flap cooperates with the greater diameter to provide a vent seal.

  • Patent number: 6173838
Abstract: A compact (10) securely engaging an edge of a blister card (60) with a multiplicity of items (62) separately packaged thereon. The compact, which is formed from a molded blank (12) of a thermoplastic material, has first and second generally planar members (20, 22) separated from one other by parallel, generally rectangular portions or strips (24, 30) that are defined by three spaced apart fold lines (14, 16, 18). The generally rectangular strips are foldable about the centrally located of the fold lines (14) to overlie one another and to engage an edge of the blister card, and are locked in such overlying positions by engagement of locking posts (26, 28) on one of the strips with recesses (32, 34) on the other of the strips. Opposed ends of the compact have locking tabs (40, 42) that are received in recesses (44, 46) in a closed position of the compact, and these locking tabs must be simultaneously manually engaged to permit the compact to be opened.

  • Patent number: 6170720
Abstract: A closure for a fluid product dispensing package that includes a tubular body for securement to a container, and having a central flow passage and a cylindrical peg axially spaced from the flow passage. A spout has a dispensing orifice, and is mounted on the base for movement between an open position in which the dispensing orifice is axially spaced from the peg to permit product flow through the passage around the peg and through the orifice, and a closed position in which the dispensing orifice closely surrounds the peg to block product flow. The dispensing orifice is circular, and has three angularly spaced recesses extending radially outwardly from and arcuately around the opening forming air vents with the peg in the closed position of the spout.
